Honda Ridgeline Guide Pulley Replacement for Rear Seat

  • If the support tube for the rear seat on your Honda Ridgeline does not retract when the seat is locked into the raised position, you likely have a broken guide pulley.
Don't pay a dealer a bunch of money to put in another plastic pulley...buy a metal one and do it yourself in less than an hour. All you need is a 10mm socket wrench!
This fix will cost you less than $20 and last longer than the original pulley.
The part number for the replacement pulley is: 82139-SJC-A02

Honda gave all kinds of excuses for this. Most blamed the owner for forcing the seat up without pulling the release. I was driving down the hiway and heard a clunk. Looked over my shoulder and the drivers side rear seat had popped up by itself. Honda accused me of doing it. Thanks for posting. I've been using bungee cords for 6 years

Thanks Tim. This was VERY helpful and gave me all the info I needed to do the job. I think the hardest part was getting the darned plastic panels off and on....

Dealer charged $275.00 for one side...thankfully, it was under warranty the FIRST time it broke 2 years into owning the truck. And the larger seat is the one that always breaks! It was originally replaced with the same plastic pulley that ended up breaking AGAIN in year 13. (It's an original 2006 that I bought new in '05).
Thank you SO MUCH for the video!!! You just saved me over $400 and the hassle of dealing with the dealer. Cost? $14 bucks for the new alloy pulleys and 45 minutes of sweat. Pass the beer!!!

Thanks so much for this! Worked like a charm on my 2006! The only thing I might add is to not fully tighten the three bolts securing the seat back until all three are in.

Outstanding video! I just fixed my Ridgeline pulleys using this step-by-step guide. My local Honda dealer wanted $450 dollars for the job. I spent $9 for the metal pulleys, $4.99 for a metric socket set, and 1 hour and 17 minutes of time. The repaired system works better than when it was new. 😊

I followed this video and this cool guy's instructions and got my 06 taken care of in about an hour back in 2014. Just "upgraded" to a loaded 07 and found out as I was about to drive home from the dealership that these were busted. Decided to eat it since I already had them fix some other issues like roof liner and cutting extra keys. On my way home, I reordered from Amazon for $15 for a set of 2 metal pullies. Will have them in as soon as they arrive. Thanks for this video!!

Bought a used Ridgeline with this problem with the seat, and within an hour, it is repaired, thanks to your very helpful video. I really appreciate the post. I will just add that when installing the pulley, it would only fit onto the axle if the cable is in one or the other cable guide positions - if one doesn't work, try the other.
Now I guess I just need Goo Gone to get rid of the duct tape residue tried by the previous owner!

Just finished the pulley replacement on my 2010 Ridgeline. Replaced with 2 metal pulleys. Followed the video here, and everything went well. When I was replacing the pulley covers, I( did not thread one of the covers back into the fabric sleeve on the seat, which meant I had to take things apart and redo. Not a big issue, but check when snapping the pulley cover back on that the lower end is inside the fabric sleeve.
Great video, easy to follow, highly recommend.

Just finished replacing both side with no problems, thanks to your excellent instructional video. Mine is a 2008 RTS. Retractors have been broken for 2 years but with Honda dealer quote of $650 plus labor, I decided to live with it. Got the pulleys through Amazon from Keenan Honda in Bucks County PA. They were certified Honda parts. $17.10 for both with free shipping. Your part number is still valid.
58 minutes for both sides including a post install vacuuming. Thanks again.

Tim, my back seat just broke (2006). Same thing. I just wanted to thank you for making this video. Hopefully, I will have the same success in tackling this DIY fix. I had an issue with my radio LCD panel and some of the lights of the controls on the steering wheel went dark. Thanks to someone on a Ridgeline owners forum, I was able to take my radio apart down to the circuit boards and re-solder a very tiny little transistor (or something like it) and it has been fine ever since. Apparently, that tiny little piece did not receive enough solder in a lot of the radio's circuit board.

Thanks for the post. I just fixed my '07 Ridgeline in 30 minutes. I ran into the same problem as Walt Rogers. All I needed to do was flip the pulley so the flat side is facing in and it worked fine. I did a number of "test folds" with the seat to make sure the cable wouldn't bind or rub on anything in that position, but it looks fine. For anyone searching, the part number is 82139-SJC-A02.

Just wanted to thank you for your post. Following your video I replaced both of the rear gear pulleys on my 2011 Ridgeline and it went just as your video. The local Honda dealer wanted $350 for each gear pulley (not including tax) so I saved about $750 by doing it myself. Pretty discouraging when you look at the cheap broken plastic gear that was part of the original equipment. Honda had to know it would break pretty much after the warranty ran out. Again, thanks much for the video.

This was very helpful. Thank you. One of my pulleys was broken exactly like yours; the other had a tiny crack just starting in the flange. In the 8 years I have owned my 2007, I have un-stowed and used the back seats less than a dozen times! Very poor choice of material for the original pulleys! [One note: when I took off the driver-side trim, the same two fasteners as yours stayed in the truck body. They have to be pried out and re-attached to the trim before it is re-installed or they will just be hole-fillers instead of functioning as fasteners.]

Several days ago I realized I needed the exact same repair to my 2007 Ridgeline. I suspected that I needed to replace both rear seat guide pulleys after googling the problem and discovering this video posted on RUclips. But first I discussed the needed repair with my local Honda dealership service advisor and then the actual service manager. The short version is they claimed to have never heard of the problem or the needed repair, weren't aware of the plastic pulley issue and proceeded to discuss an inspection, a diagnostic fee, and an estimate of over $600 to make the repair. They insisted on 3 hours of labor and a couple hundred dollars of necessary parts. I discussed the internet posts found and the overwhelming prevalence of the problem being discussed online. They apparently haven't heard of Google, RUclips or customer service. I purchased two replacement metal pulleys from the dealer, and successfully made the repair, following the video posted, etc. All was repaired and completed in about an hour and ten minutes. I spent at total of $10.38 and about an hour of effort. Not counting the day of frustration with the dealer who was going to honestly overcharge me by about $620.00. It has left a bad taste in my mouth over how they responded to my inquiry and the ridiculous repair suggested by my Honda dealer. Thank you for your video posted regarding this repair procedure. Shame on Honda and my dealership in particular.

The operation was a complete success! Thank you for posting this video. I wouldn't have known where to begin. If I may add 2 helpful hints: 1- After watching your video I was under the impression that there was some kind of latch mechanism to remove the seatback. I finally realized it just lifts up and off. 2- I was headed to the garage to get a file because the 2nd pulley wouldn't go on the shaft. Then, after taking a closer look I saw that the orientation of the pulley has to be correct. It won't go on the shaft if you attempt to install it 180 degrees from the "correct" alignment. Again, Thank you!!

I have an '11 Ridgeline with this problem.....after watching, I may pay Dealer price....insisting they install the metal pulley.....unless I find a shade tree to do it for less. I LOVE my Ridgeline!

    Thanks Tim!
Nicely paced, clearly shown procedure. Took my time and still got done under an hour.
I replaced both as you suggested and glad I did. Second one had a fracture and would have gone soon too.
Parts less than $17 for both from Ebay source.

Your awesome. Thanks so much for posting this. You saved me a ton of money. When putting the plastic panels back on, I noticed that some of the snaps had pulled off and were in the holes in the body. That's ok, but they need to be pull out of the holes and then slid back into their slots on the panel so that the panel can snap back in.

Thank you so much. $13 repair with Amazon Prime. Can't wait to ask the dealer how much the parts would be and how much I'd have had to spend to fix it.

I performed this repair today on a 2009 Ridgeline. Sure enough, both plastic pulleys were split. Thanks for the informative video.
One thing to note (on a 2009 anyway) is that in addition to facing the pulley the correct way (flat side out), the pulley also has to be correctly aligned vertically to the shaft - there is an "up" and a "down." If you have it wrong, like I did for several minutes, you will think the pulley is the wrong size for the shaft. Remove the cable from the pulley, rotate the pulley 180 degrees and reinsert the cable. The pulley should now slide on the shaft perfectly. (I think some others have already attempted to note this point, but they did so in replies rather than in the main comments thread.)
