Harri, you might be interested to know that when Muhammad Ali retired, American sports commentator Howard Cosell recited the lyrics of this beautiful song in tribute to Ali on national TV. Genius poetry saluting an athletic genius.
John, thank you for adding this now-historic tribute from Howard Cosell to Muhammad Ali. I have vivid memories of watching this on TV. "Genius poetry saluting an athletic genius." - well stated, John!
Late in Ali's career, it seems like it was part of a Wide World of Sports segment. Title fights might still have been 15 rounds, and often live, or or shown very soon after the fight.
He wrote this for his son who was a baby at the time. I am a huge Dylan fan and this in my opinion is one of his best songs. Edit. Always thought of it as a kind of prayer.
It's a mandolin played by Levon Helm of The Band, who backed Dylan on the album this track comes from. Levon normally played drums but it just shows you how incredibly talented The Band members were.
That’s the personnel for the fast version. On Planet Waves, there are 2 versions. This is the slow version with Levon on mandolin. Check the wikipedia entry for the album. You’ll see mandolin in Helm’s line.
It goes to show once again that he is the greatest creator of songs of any lifetime in a thousand years to come they will still be studying Bob Dylan's music.
This is one of my favorite Dylan songs. Reminds me so much of my father who remained forever young till his death at 100 yrs old. Makes me tear up every time, I miss him so much. I would like to have the lyrics imprinted on a plaque for my grandson. Thanks so much for reacting to this beautiful song.
Dylan wrote this song in 1966 for his son Jesse. It was released in 1979. There are 2 versions of this song, this slow paced version and a quicker version. Beautiful sentiments that all parents hold in their hearts. Obviously parenthood soften Bob and is so evident in this lovely ballad. The instruments are just so fabulous and grab you into a this amazing tune. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Stephen. Wonderful tune. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks Harri! Great reaction...keep playing the barb. Bobby ruled the 60's!...I have passed this ironic song along to my 3 children & eventually, my 4 young grandsons, will each get a copy to remind them of grandpa & this great Nobel winning artist, Bob Dylan. Saw BD in 1974 with The Band. That was awesome! class of 1968.
Dylan was so important an influence - we would listen to him by the hour and parse every word. Yes, forever young, I too am sometimes still young and strong in my mind.
An incredible masterpiece, and yet it’s just another grain of sand in the vast ocean of Dylan’s work. Wouldn’t be surprised if this was only The Band’s first or second run-through of the tune. Bob’s “first take is the best take” philosophy gives the song that same ragged, soulful honesty that was all over The Basement Tapes. He loves to just show his studio guys the changes just once, and then just hit record and see what comes out. It’s the absolute opposite of todays Pro Tools/auto-tuned search for perfection, and it’s what made the old music so much better! You can almost hear them feeling their way through it, searching for little nuances here and there, making it all up on the fly, and just reveling in the fact that they’re all so very much on the same page.
A beautiful tribute to one's child! Or to anyone. This was a brand new song in 1974 when I saw Bob Dylan and The Band perform it in Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Canada. Thousands of people in the audience lit matches and lighters. We all figured he was singing it for US! "May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift". Just marvelous!
I’ve been reading through the comments and people have pretty much said it all about this beautiful poetry. Can’t think of any new accolades, so I will just thank Stephen Q for the request and Harri for the insights. Just gorgeous 🌺✌️
Those people are obtuse. They can’t even comprehend what he’s singing/ saying let alone criticize him for his vocals or lack there of. There are great performers that are not technically great singers. It’s the entire package. Mic from the stones for example , I can rattle off countless performers that for some people they just don’t like their voice . I’ll always have a cup of tea for these legendary/icons.
I have been a huge fan since his very beginning. I'm a little disappointed that my "kids" never cared for him. I told them they just never took the time to really LISTEN to his music and the messages in them. That hasn't dampened my enthusiasm one little bit. I'm just as big a fan now as I was in the 60s. Bob Dylan is still incredible!
This is a protest song from the Viet Nam era. So many young soldiers were coming home in caskets, hence “forever young”. I just started to get these videos today. Is there a big push for black folks to acquaint themselves with music of my generation? I am so thrilled to enjoy this awakening. I have always been in awe of the renaissance of great music of the 60s and 70s. We changed the world. This music is our legacy and I for one am so happy to share it with you generation.
I love Bob Dylan. Please do more music of this icon. His lyrics are magical. He is a legend. This version of this song is a bit slower than his other renditions of this song. He has a lot of excellent music 🎶, here are some great suggestions I would love to see you react to: “ Don’t think twice, it’s all right”. “ Blowing in the Wind” “ Tangled up in Blue”, “Tambourine Man”, and so many others. Please so more if the one and only Bob Dylan!
When Bob sings forever young you can pick up his southern USA roots, this song can bring me to tears, it is just magical and anthemic, I believe this song will be sung in another 50 years if we survive that long.
Oooh Bob. How do I love thee? Let me count thee ways..... "May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung." Superb. I used to play this for my daughter.
Always did love this song! In my mind I am forever a teen, too bad that my body didn't get the memo, ha! Dylan has an album that is country flavored called "Nashville Skyline" which was received about as well as when he went electric. It didnt sell well. A lot of his fans wanted him to remain stagnant and not grow musically. The only hit on it is "Lay Lady Lay" but I think that the whole album is top notch. By the way, Rod Stewart has a song with the title of "Forever Young", and tho it's a different song, he gave Dylan credit for the inspiration
Thank you so much! So many inter winding of instruments, and beautiful words! 50 years ago, I was 18, and this song makes me remember so many things from that time, very touching! It just means more and more as I age. Written with love and wisdom!
I was going to say that this was the Band from the album Planet Waves This brought Dylan back into critical acclaim with the critics after a short period when he could not do right by them despite still putting classic songs out for release
Such a beautiful song. People always overlook the beautiful melodies in Dylan's music and recite that cliche that it's all about his lyrics. (get some ears I would say to them).I love you enthusiasm for Dylan's music! Great reaction.
Laughing at your comment because so often I feel so much younger. My knees remind me otherwise. But, as I have often commented, you either remind me of old favorites or introduce me to songs I should know but don't. Thanks for this. Love Bob Dylan.
Bod and Lenonard Cohen were both prophets that the church overlooked or never listened to. Most all their songs had a deeper meaning behind the words. Thanks for this one. I needed it. 😃
I listen to this song about 5or 6 times in a row in the car when I have my50-mile drive. Just today! How funny that I found your reaction tonight. Dylan is great!

My mom and dad watched Joan Baez introduce a teenage Dylan at the Blackhawk in San Francisco when he was still a relative unknown outside NY. I got to see him and the Band, along with the Grateful Dead in the early 1980’s and Dylan solo again about 1987 or so. (Same thing with Miles Davis and Zappa. Parents, my dad really, saw them when we lived in California, where I was born, and I was lucky enough to see them both in Ohio in my late teens and early 20’s. All geniuses in their own way but lyrically, Dylan is pretty hard to touch. And The Band? Fugettaboutit. Totally awesome. Levon and Danko, were my two favorites. There are so many varying covers of this classic because it's become an anthem. This version (the original?) is definitely a country song arrangement. And when he sings the line that introduces the chorus: "May you stay, forever young" -- sounds like he's emulating one of his idols, Johnny Cash, with the deep nasal descending intonation on "forever young". I would expect that Johnny Cash would have covered "Forever Young", but I'm going to find out this minute! Thanks for reacting to this song!
I will never understand people who say Dylan cannot sing .. they may have ears … but they do not have a heart
To loosely quote Steve Van Zandt, Dylan’s voice may not be your cup of tea but he’s one of the greatest singers of all time.
Bob can write the sweetest songs and songs like a dagger. Nobody beats his writing.
Harri, you might be interested to know that when Muhammad Ali retired, American sports commentator Howard Cosell recited the lyrics of this beautiful song in tribute to Ali on national TV. Genius poetry saluting an athletic genius.
I remember that this song was part of a tribute to Ali , I just couldn't remember how. Thanks John , now I do. One of my very favorites from Mr.Dylan.
John, thank you for adding this now-historic tribute from Howard Cosell to Muhammad Ali. I have vivid memories of watching this on TV. "Genius poetry saluting an athletic genius." - well stated, John!
Backed by "The Band". From the album "Planet Waves". There's also a fast version.
Late in Ali's career, it seems like it was part of a Wide World of Sports segment. Title fights might still have been 15 rounds, and often live, or or shown very soon after the fight.

It is a prayer! The patriarch prays over his children on Shabbat!!!!
i used to drive a truck through the night many times listening to this song thinking of my 3 children with tears rolling down my eyes, god bless Bob
Thanks for sharing that.
No wonder BOB DYLAN received a Nobel prize for literature, this man is a Genius. Great stuff Harri, Love your channel.
