Harri, you might be interested to know that when Muhammad Ali retired, American sports commentator Howard Cosell recited the lyrics of this beautiful song in tribute to Ali on national TV. Genius poetry saluting an athletic genius.
John, thank you for adding this now-historic tribute from Howard Cosell to Muhammad Ali. I have vivid memories of watching this on TV. "Genius poetry saluting an athletic genius." - well stated, John!
Late in Ali's career, it seems like it was part of a Wide World of Sports segment. Title fights might still have been 15 rounds, and often live, or or shown very soon after the fight.
It's a mandolin played by Levon Helm of The Band, who backed Dylan on the album this track comes from. Levon normally played drums but it just shows you how incredibly talented The Band members were.
That’s the personnel for the fast version. On Planet Waves, there are 2 versions. This is the slow version with Levon on mandolin. Check the wikipedia entry for the album. You’ll see mandolin in Helm’s line.
He wrote this for his son who was a baby at the time. I am a huge Dylan fan and this in my opinion is one of his best songs. Edit. Always thought of it as a kind of prayer.
This is one of my favorite Dylan songs. Reminds me so much of my father who remained forever young till his death at 100 yrs old. Makes me tear up every time, I miss him so much. I would like to have the lyrics imprinted on a plaque for my grandson. Thanks so much for reacting to this beautiful song.
I chose this song to be the one my dad and I danced to at my wedding reception. That was 2007. I felt this sentiment went both ways. He’s gone now. May he rest in peace.
It goes to show once again that he is the greatest creator of songs of any lifetime in a thousand years to come they will still be studying Bob Dylan's music.
Dylan wrote this song in 1966 for his son Jesse. It was released in 1979. There are 2 versions of this song, this slow paced version and a quicker version. Beautiful sentiments that all parents hold in their hearts. Obviously parenthood soften Bob and is so evident in this lovely ballad. The instruments are just so fabulous and grab you into a this amazing tune. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Stephen. Wonderful tune. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
I have been a huge fan since his very beginning. I'm a little disappointed that my "kids" never cared for him. I told them they just never took the time to really LISTEN to his music and the messages in them. That hasn't dampened my enthusiasm one little bit. I'm just as big a fan now as I was in the 60s. Bob Dylan is still incredible!
Dylan was so important an influence - we would listen to him by the hour and parse every word. Yes, forever young, I too am sometimes still young and strong in my mind.
Thanks Harri! Great reaction...keep playing the barb. Bobby ruled the 60's!...I have passed this ironic song along to my 3 children & eventually, my 4 young grandsons, will each get a copy to remind them of grandpa & this great Nobel winning artist, Bob Dylan. Saw BD in 1974 with The Band. That was awesome! class of 1968.
This is a protest song from the Viet Nam era. So many young soldiers were coming home in caskets, hence “forever young”. I just started to get these videos today. Is there a big push for black folks to acquaint themselves with music of my generation? I am so thrilled to enjoy this awakening. I have always been in awe of the renaissance of great music of the 60s and 70s. We changed the world. This music is our legacy and I for one am so happy to share it with you generation.
When Bob sings forever young you can pick up his southern USA roots, this song can bring me to tears, it is just magical and anthemic, I believe this song will be sung in another 50 years if we survive that long.
A beautiful tribute to one's child! Or to anyone. This was a brand new song in 1974 when I saw Bob Dylan and The Band perform it in Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Canada. Thousands of people in the audience lit matches and lighters. We all figured he was singing it for US! "May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift". Just marvelous!
An incredible masterpiece, and yet it’s just another grain of sand in the vast ocean of Dylan’s work. Wouldn’t be surprised if this was only The Band’s first or second run-through of the tune. Bob’s “first take is the best take” philosophy gives the song that same ragged, soulful honesty that was all over The Basement Tapes. He loves to just show his studio guys the changes just once, and then just hit record and see what comes out. It’s the absolute opposite of todays Pro Tools/auto-tuned search for perfection, and it’s what made the old music so much better! You can almost hear them feeling their way through it, searching for little nuances here and there, making it all up on the fly, and just reveling in the fact that they’re all so very much on the same page.
I love Bob Dylan. Please do more music of this icon. His lyrics are magical. He is a legend. This version of this song is a bit slower than his other renditions of this song. He has a lot of excellent music 🎶, here are some great suggestions I would love to see you react to: “ Don’t think twice, it’s all right”. “ Blowing in the Wind” “ Tangled up in Blue”, “Tambourine Man”, and so many others. Please so more if the one and only Bob Dylan!
Those people are obtuse. They can’t even comprehend what he’s singing/ saying let alone criticize him for his vocals or lack there of. There are great performers that are not technically great singers. It’s the entire package. Mic from the stones for example , I can rattle off countless performers that for some people they just don’t like their voice . I’ll always have a cup of tea for these legendary/icons.
I’ve been reading through the comments and people have pretty much said it all about this beautiful poetry. Can’t think of any new accolades, so I will just thank Stephen Q for the request and Harri for the insights. Just gorgeous 🌺✌️
Oooh Bob. How do I love thee? Let me count thee ways..... "May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung." Superb. I used to play this for my daughter.
Always did love this song! In my mind I am forever a teen, too bad that my body didn't get the memo, ha! Dylan has an album that is country flavored called "Nashville Skyline" which was received about as well as when he went electric. It didnt sell well. A lot of his fans wanted him to remain stagnant and not grow musically. The only hit on it is "Lay Lady Lay" but I think that the whole album is top notch. By the way, Rod Stewart has a song with the title of "Forever Young", and tho it's a different song, he gave Dylan credit for the inspiration
Such a beautiful song. People always overlook the beautiful melodies in Dylan's music and recite that cliche that it's all about his lyrics. (get some ears I would say to them).I love you enthusiasm for Dylan's music! Great reaction.
Thank you so much! So many inter winding of instruments, and beautiful words! 50 years ago, I was 18, and this song makes me remember so many things from that time, very touching! It just means more and more as I age. Written with love and wisdom!
I was going to say that this was the Band from the album Planet Waves This brought Dylan back into critical acclaim with the critics after a short period when he could not do right by them despite still putting classic songs out for release
I listen to this song about 5or 6 times in a row in the car when I have my50-mile drive. Just today! How funny that I found your reaction tonight. Dylan is great!
This is a divine version, from Planet Waves, with the Band. The music, the singing, the lyrics, it is all just amazingly beautiful. Good start HarriBest!
It’s interesting that you said it seemed like the kind of song your grandfather would play for you. In my mind, this song is like a blessing; exactly what an elder would give to a young child. Dylan’s lyrics are so beautiful and meaningful
HIGH HARRI.... I have several times suggested you do Bob Dylan-"It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding"....Live. Not just a song, a lesson on life itself. Lyrics like nobody else has ever written. It Is A MUST for you..... It will "Blow You Away"....Thank You
Laughing at your comment because so often I feel so much younger. My knees remind me otherwise. But, as I have often commented, you either remind me of old favorites or introduce me to songs I should know but don't. Thanks for this. Love Bob Dylan.
Some artists may find themselves intimidated by Bob Dylan. I get inspired by him. He constantly moves forward and is always truthful to the muse that speaks to him. He won't let himself be pigeonholed and he doesn't care about what his audience wants from him. His voice is his voice. He uses it to convey what he wants to convey. All of this has resulted in a legacy that can never be matched. The Beatles may be the best band. Bob Dylan is the best single artist in the rock and roll era.
Bod and Lenonard Cohen were both prophets that the church overlooked or never listened to. Most all their songs had a deeper meaning behind the words. Thanks for this one. I needed it. 😃
Have you checked out infidels? Sone great, underrated tunes there. Sweetheart like you, I & I, jokerman, license to kill, neighborhood bully, lord protect my child. His band at that time, sly & Robbie, mark Knophler and mick Taylor.
I believe he wrote this on the birth of his son Jesse, who's managed almost the entirety of his still Never Ending Tour. Devised a way for an artist like Dylan to survive essentially without seeking out press or television, just doing what he wants with his own music. MAY YOUR HANDS ALWAYS BE BUSY.. MAY YOUR FEET ALWAYS BE SWIFT.. MAY YOU HAVE A STRONG FOUNDATION.. WHEN THE WINDS OF CHANGES SHIFT. And.. it's mandolin being violently strummed.. changing chords. You are already big Dylan fan. Anyone who cherishes life as seeking right or wrong, to see if it really exists for oneself, being one who will often look underneath singular rocks to see if "the popular conclusion" holds together, or not, and maybe write about it, without trying to start a revolution with every turned stone.. the person doing that is already a Dylan fan. Only the depth of the "fandom" is undetermined. We're traveling thw same roads going from young to old.. or as Dylan has also noted about himself.. I WAS SO MUCH OLDER THEN.. I'M YOUNGER THAN THAT NOW.-- My Back Pages. Searching for.. or just ramming into by accident.. it's endless MYTH OR FACT moments on alk of our journeys. That's why for me, there are certain phrases or verses in nearly every Dylan song which, when repeated out loud, seem CRYING TO BE APPLIED to what happened today in real time, or be thought of personally as to WHAT WE TOO FELT yesterday or some meaningful summer before. Even if Dylan hasn't seen it all, or done it all, he's exposed himself to so much more than the rest of us could hope to recall thinking about. AND WROTE IT DOWN.. RECORDED FEELINGS.. A TIMELESS HISTORY TO BE SURE. What in a young man's time gets labeled ARROGANCE that nobody didn't not notice, becomes akin in Dylan's life to seeing "perfect pitch" in every sparrow fallen.. in every grain of sand. While the art of Dylan should be remembered for hundreds of years, and not be subjected to shallow critics who wrongly equate every strong high WARBLE OF ANY AND EVERY HELD NOTE with great singing.. the actual memory for Dylan is unavoidably to be far shorter. For obvious reasons that Mankind can't refuse to own. Depicting brilliant stories of "learning moments unlearned", it could be said that Dylan toiled in Morality, Sin, Science, Magic, God, Cowboys, in Masters of Words or Wars, and the endless conversations with himself about what all of us ARE OR ARE NOT, wholly to our benefit, only to leave doubts, whatever it is we wind up doing or not doing with what he'll leave behind. Stuff of the double-edged like this from Ring Them Bells: THE LINES ARE LONG.. AND THE FIGHTING IS STRONG.. AND THEY'RE BREAKING DOWN THE DISTANCE.. BETWEEN RIGHT AND WRONG. More widely instructive? More than that warning inside what Wimpy told Popeye and Olive Oil about his own (cartoon) intentions.. every day? I WOULD GLADLY PAY YOU TUESDAY.. FOR A HAMBURGER TODAY. So it goes.. that when this Life We Think We Live So Uniquely goes down, whether to Aliens or Nukes or God or His Asteroids, it'll be Dylan and Wimpy, both singing out JUST LIKE THAT BIRD, for a hamburger, on the cuff. At least.. til Ruby Tuesday. Or was it Friday.. Wednesday?
My mom and dad watched Joan Baez introduce a teenage Dylan at the Blackhawk in San Francisco when he was still a relative unknown outside NY. I got to see him and the Band, along with the Grateful Dead in the early 1980’s and Dylan solo again about 1987 or so. (Same thing with Miles Davis and Zappa. Parents, my dad really, saw them when we lived in California, where I was born, and I was lucky enough to see them both in Ohio in my late teens and early 20’s. All geniuses in their own way but lyrically, Dylan is pretty hard to touch. And The Band? Fugettaboutit. Totally awesome. Levon and Danko, were my two favorites. The crap Robbie pulled on Levon was unforgivable. Watch “I ain’t in it for my health,” and ask yourself how Levon the HEART of The Band, could end up having to put on shows like the Midnight Ramble (while dying of cancer) to keep from losing his home. I digress. Great stuff ❤️👍🏼
I will never understand people who say Dylan cannot sing .. they may have ears … but they do not have a heart
To loosely quote Steve Van Zandt, Dylan’s voice may not be your cup of tea but he’s one of the greatest singers of all time.
They may have ears but they fail to listen
Bob can write the sweetest songs and songs like a dagger. Nobody beats his writing.

Never forget the emotional power of Bob Dylan. I forget from time to time, and then a song like this restores the feeling. God Bless.

Wednesday?
When I hear this song, I see the names chiseled on 'The Wall'. They are the 'Forever Young'. Welcome Home, Brothers.
Bob is my all time favourite song writer and i love this song. Joan Baez version of this song is beautiful
It doesn’t matter the time of day my bestie, stay forever young 👏🏼 👏🏼 🙏🏽
"Nashville Skyline" was his country album. Lots of great songs.
Very underrated little album, short and sweet.
