  • Time to replace the timing belt and all idler pulleys on our 2004 Subaru Outback. The old belt was 13 years old and had 133,000 miles on it. Surprisingly, it was in perfect shape. No cracking or dry rot. I could even read the labels on it, including the timing marks. This job was very easy to accomplish in the driveway. All replacement parts are OEM Subaru.

At the end of the video, when replacing the crankshaft bolt, I read somewhere it needs to be torqued very high. I am trying to remove the crankshaft bolt in my 03 outback and needed to buy a specialized crankshaft pulley remover ($30 online), that fits into the four holes on the crankshaft pulley and has a long bar that rests on the frame, and allows you to torque the bolt without spinning the pulley. I imagine that is the tool that was used the tighten the final bolt in this video.

Is this the second time the belts being replaces, we were told to replace the belt after every 100,000 klms so I'm replacing the belt, pump and all the other associated parts while I'm at it. Ours has just turned over 120,000 klms and we love the old beast.

How did you take the crank pulley bolt out after rotating the engine after timing change?

What is that book you're using? Is there an instruction guide how to replace everything?
