I absolutely love Pelagic trips. The pelagic boat trip from Eaglehawk Neck is one of the highest-calibre seabird-watching adventures in Australian waters. It starts from the southeastern tip of Tasmania, where you can see many different Southern Ocean birds, such as albatrosses, petrels, and prions.
I really enjoyed this video, Mike. You had me laughing several times with your description of trying to photograph the shearwaters off the side of the boat and your description of what it would take to do a focus comparison test of the different brands and models. I just as I was thinking it you said, "and by the time you finished it would be out of date anyway." Broke me up. Thanks for a good trip and good commentary.
Great info and footage. Beautiful shots of these wave skimming seabirds. Great shot of the Pomarine skua with the wings up showing it's very nice underwing.
Another beautiful video. Loved those pictures from such a rocking boat! Sea sickness feels terrible. Felt really sorry for your wife. I belong to her camp unfortunately. And the medications do not help much!
i can have a great time on a boat for hours. feeling nothing but joy. than there are other times where i barfed my soul out and felt sick for 2 weeks after that. until today i couldnt figure out what made the difference. but boy does it terrify me to even think about doing one of those tours and i can relate to your wife.
Great vlog Mike 👍. I love your humour, the horn at the beginning, so funny 😂. I was seasick on the ferry from penzance, so I've no chance on the boat trips 🤢. Some great birds to see though 👍
Great stuff Mike. Never been to the Scilly’s but do fancy a trip there. Defo agree about how difficult it is to focus on a bobbing boat, had the same problem around the Farne’s a few weeks ago!
Very nice video, Mike!! I saw that your exposures varied from 1/2000-1/10000 s and wanted to know if this was based more on relative light around you as it didn’t seem to correlate with flying speed of the various species (Storm petrels vs. Skua). Do you also float the ISO (auto)? I have a “tentative” pelagic scheduled off Capetown, SA and know I need at least 1/4000 s.
I do not use auto iso. I prefer to set the iso. Shutter speed will vary all the time as you pan and the light changes. 2500th and upwards for flight photography.
Top drawer ... How was the sea spray from the waves ?? Looking at her main deck little protection from the elements . How's the view from below deck ???
Great pics! If anyone is qualified on cameras and auto focus, you are IMHO. I feel sorry for your wife having such a miserable time and I almost tossed my cookies just thinking about it. Oops! gotta go
Great video Mike. Its so difficult photographing birds when the boat is rocking about.

Thank you for sharing this adventure. Your seabird photography is wonderful!
Many thanks!

Hi Mike, that made me fill seasick just watching it. Great video and great pictures.
Glad you enjoyed it

thanks for a great tale of visiting a special place and doing special things. Fascinating from beginning to end.
Glad you enjoyed it
As usual a splendid video and some great points you make as well.
Thanks.
Top video like usual.
Thanks again!
The intro was fabulous. I totally laughed after the set up and then the punchline (punchtone).
Thanks.
You did rather well in that challenging photography scenario Mike.
Thanks.

Same with me.
Fabulous Mike, thanks for making this 👍

Useful video, Mike. Going to the Scillies next week for a week - already bought the seasickness pills!!!!
You will need them.

hi mike
the flawless and best autofocus system has yet to be invented😂
your poor wife 🤭..great video, love your stuff
She enjoyed it really.
I would be hanging over the side too. The ferry makes me feel bad
Somedays it hits me bad and others not at all.

There is no below deck. Waterproof trousers would be worth taking.
I think I would only book on the day, so I could choose the weather and avoid being seasick!
The boat can be fully booked, especially earlier in the season.
Very interesting video; thanks Mike. I think you owed your long-suffering wife a slap-up meal after that experience!
You bet
There`s no point chasing after the best camera which doesn`t exist anyway.
