Yes, Mr. Pure Energy. Diagnosed with Diabetes 1 at age 14 and a cancer survivor. Doctors said he'd live only until 44 years old, but now he's 57. He's truly an inspiration as a person with passion. It shows in his singing and dancing... and even talking. hehe.

You can understand why his nickname is Mr. Pure Energy. I really wish there were better video recordings of his younger days. I had the opportunity to see him perform during a concert at school in the Philippines during the mid 1990's. He's an excellent dancer. Has quite a few moves still at age 57.

Gary V. is known as Mr. Pure Energy in the Philippines and now you know why. He is no spring chicken these days but he still gives a very energetic performance the whole way through. He was also one of the judges on the season of "Your face sounds familiar" that the T.N.T. Boys won.

The song was written by jazz pianist Chick Corea in the early 70's, and singer Al Jarreau wrote the lyrics in 1980 (and inserted his own scatting part). Katrina Velarde used to tour as one of Gary's backup singers, and there is a Y.Tube video of them singing this together live "@ The Town Hall". It is also part of her latin medley. Now you will recognize Gary when you see him as a judge at KZ's audition and the TNT boys on Your Face Sounds Familiar. (I think he was trying to cough quietly behind his sweater.)
Ohhhhh that explains it. It has Al Jarreau vibes. I remember Al and this was how he sung songs. Lol. Go now and listen to some Al Jarreau on utube. Chuck Correa wrote the music in 70s. Al wrote lyrics in 80. You nailed it

I watched Alwin Jarreau's concert in Austin a couple of years before his passing. He was no ordinary singer but was an extraordinary vocalist, literally more like a multi-instrumentalist; and Gary V. just about perfected Al's scat singing and improvisation. Gary is amazing! Hey, do check out Katrina Velarde's "Latin Medley". I heard Gary occasionally mentored Katrina a while back. And "Spain", in a tuneful version, is in that collection of short songs. You'll like it for sure, I guarantee. Thanks! 👍🏻🎶🤗💕🇺🇸

Gary is a great singer and musical composer/director. Many thought he wouldn't be able to sing again for not so long ago he had cancer. He is ok now and a cancer survivor and back to singing 😊.

This is another Wish Bus performance that makes me curious of the way they film these. Not only is he singing this rhythmically difficult part in unison with the piano, flute and drums, but there is a part where the camera shots switch in exactly the same rhythm (8:07). I think they would have to film the whole thing simultaneously with several cameras, and then edit them together afterwards. Then another way they make the song so lively is that they switch camera angles nearly every vocal line throughout the entire song.

SPAIN was originally composed by Chick Corea and released back in 1973. American Jazz singer, Al Jarreau put in the lyrics and sang it in 1980. Now, scatting is normally done by singers for just a couple of phrases and not majority of the song. Filipino singer, Gary Valenciano not only scatted, but he emulated different musical instruments, like the guitar, bass, electric guitar, trombone, drums, congas, musical triangle, etc. Gary displayed his level of musicianship as well. He is also a very good dancer. When he first started, he began as a Ballad singer and has branched out to Pop, Jazz and even Gospel. Gary Valenciano is known here in the Philippines as Mr. Pure Energy. He also mentors Katrina Velarde.

Although he still dances now and is part of a variety show every week here in the Philippines. He did have cancer but he is also diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

Spain is an instrumental piece by Chick Corea (1971). Al Jarreau added the lyrics later on (1980). So this song By Gary is the Al Jarreau version.

Try Roland "Bunot" Abante cover of To Love Somebody or You're the Inspiration on wish bus. He's got some serious raspy voice....like a mix of Brian Adams and Michael Bolton.

You got them both right, it"s a cover, originally an instrumental jazz piece, and later on a version with lyrics by Al Jarreau, which is what Gary's singing, and he"s scatting, improvising, mimicking the sounds of musical instruments😁🤣

The original is not by Chick Corea. The original's title is Concerto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo. Chick Corea did his own Jazz version while Al Jarreau first did the "vocalese" version. Nevertheless, Gary Valenciano's interpretation is still very very impressive and does a good job paying tribute to the song.
