RACE WEEK Day 2: Twin Turbo LS 57 Chev Wagon Runs And Drives 300 Miles! (Even If Parts Fall Off)

  • We have only driven SBXDOOM ten miles since she was was rebuilt, now she has to run and drive 300 miles into the desert?!
If you like this style of racing, head to www.sickthemagazine.com and sign up for Sick The Mag, coming out in August! Leave a comment below with what you guys think about the drag and drive scene.
We know the Sh**box can manage a couple of miles to the end of the track and back, but we had no idea how we would go on a day-long drive. It was so hot and we needed to make some mods along the way to handle the heat for car and passengers!
Rocky Mountain Race Week means driving some huge distances and the trek from Great Bend, Kansas to Pueblo, Colorado is a long one.
We kind of know what Derek from Vice Grip Garage goes through now when he takes an unknown vehicle and heads off on the highway.
It was a tough day on some cars, and we were sorry to hear about Cleetus McFarland's Ruby Corvette breaking on day one after laying down an awesome pass. Hopefully they can come back later in the week with something cool.
    - Tom and Ayden Bailey

If people really thought about it, Rocky Mountain, Midwest, and Drag week really is one of the most American things there is to do. It’s not even all about drag racing it’s meeting cool people, traveling with friends and family, having peoples back and most of all everyone coming together at one place to enjoy the moment.

Congrats on the graduation young man have a great race week.
I'm surprised you rich guys don't figure out a way to run AC in those cars. I know its a parasitic drag on the engine just take the belt off at the track. Vintage Air could make you a system to work in those cars I am sure.
I'm working on a car with a guy and we are putting a Vintage air unit on it. His car will be close to 3000 hp and he figures if it takes 100 horses to drive it so what he will be a lot cooler than without it.

Tom, im a ex marine engineer and been involved with maintenance for over 30 years including extensive use of inferred thermographics. The problem with using thermographics (temp gun) on metals is that it's difficult to gauge the emissivity Factor and the guns you are using can not be adjusted for it and are really designed for wiring etc. The gun emissivity will be set at .95 and will give you an inaccurate LOW reading of 20 to 60degC. To over come this problem easly just get some spray paint and spray the gear box in little patches where you want the reading. Any non metalic paint will do but mat black is the best and this will give you an accurate reading with in 1 or 2 degrees C as the emissivity valve of paint is between .92 & .97 which will match the gun and remove the aluminium guess work. If you want more info just email or look it up on google as its a very common misunderstanding of the use of thermographics and it dont want you to blow up your box thinking it may be ok. P.S been doing this a long time, so it not some internet non factural oppion. thank for all you enjoyment you provide.

Infrared thermometer in the tool box helps in a pinch to determine temp of something or verify a coolant sensor is actually working. A great tool to have in a pinch, can help you diagnose a lot of things especially if you know what temp they should be or have something to compare too.

Get a vw a/c the ones that you wind the window up on. Im sure you can find them or fab one. Then you wouldn't have to deal with fans, bigger alternators or anything and it wouldn't create any extra weight or drag while racing. Not sure if you want to go the route Garrett did with the cool suits but that's also an option. The vw a/c is the cheapest and the way I'd go for race week.

The nice deal with what Kevin did to Garrett’s car is that they’ve already got the icebox for the intercooler. So, all you have to do is add the small pump and fittings for the cool shirts. I wouldn’t be surprised if a bunch of guys copy the setup since many already have the icebox for the intercooler.
