    What will be done with the old sugar shanty? will it be dismantled and equipment sold or will it be kept in working order so that you have a backup system? What can be done to expand the number of trees you have both now and in the future? I would be pushing to cull trees that are not maple any place I had control of the trees and planting more maples. I do not know what the dangers of having an all maple tree forest are or if there are any dangers. One partial solution would be to plant some other maples other than Sugar Maple just to mix up the woods a bit. When planting a new forest I would plant more trees then would really do well in the space at full size and then cut out the ones that are too close together giving firewood... If I understand things correctly it may take 40 years to get a maple tree to size. Could be that jewelweed can push back against poison ivy and other unwanted plants. I just did a quick google on it so more and more reliable information would be needed. It sounds like it is 2-5 feet tall in summer and dies down for winter so that is perfect!

    So when the season is done for collecting sap, do you have to remove all the lines from the trees or just stop collecting?

    • @MapleFarmer

      We collect the sap every couple of hours while it is running. Most of our woods run into a silo, we are hoping to add a silo to the one in the video next year! Because of freezing temps isn't there a risk of the pumps and hard line plumbing at the various locations getting ruined if it freezes for too long. Also can't the plastic piping from tree to tree freeze up and even if that plastic can handle the expansion it would prevent the sap from being drawn through the system. Or does sap somehow not freeze until a lower temp then the water freezing point ?

    • @MapleFarmer
      @MapleFarmer  3 года назад +1

      Sap freezes. Therefore we have to turn them on and off depending on the temperature. Also we have heaters in our pump houses to keep the pumps from freezing

      @@MapleFarmer Ok that all makes sense although that pump on the open style holding tank is sitting outside or do you close off the tank valve and then drain the pump out each time. I can see its a real challenge and having the proper setup to keep expensive items from the nasty grasp of "Mr Frost". Sometime you could make a video bringing up that whole aspect as its easy to overlook that as a viewer as we always see flowing sap in the tanks and lines.

      We drain that pump each time.

    in a season, how many truckloads do you fill? Was that all the sap shown for one season, ie 9600 gallons, and how m many taps does that come from?

      That was just for one terrible day. When the sap is running good we will get 6 truckloads

      We buy some sap from people who use buckets. When we test theirs it’s not uncommon to see it in the 3% range.

    What happens with the remaining sap in the lines when the season is done? Do you just leave a valve open off season so any addition sap will just flow into the ground then shut the valve on the first sign of winter?

      We pull all the taps and run water through all the lines to clean them out
