  • I review, breakdown and explain The Kitchen Netflix. I discuss the 2024 movie which stars Kano from Top Boy and is directed by Daniel Kaluuya and Kibwe Tavares. I react to the themes of the movie, it's similarity to Black Mirror and also the ending on if Izi and Benji survived.

    I enjoyed the movie despite being frustrated at the ambiguous end. The characters had so much heart & soul. Benji stole my heart with his openness & innocence. Lord Kitchener seems to have referenced a famous calypsonian who had a lot of political messages in his music as well. However, if this is a dystopian then we are living in one because I’m pretty sure this is all happening right now.

    I think the movie is worth a watch, but it still annoyed me how it went along. I don't actually think anything substantial was presented throughout the whole movie, it almost like the whole runtime was just waiting for the last 20 minutes to happen. I think the characters were well thought out but really lacked the development in terms of their relationship. I also think the message of gentrification as a whole could have gone a lot futher. As someone who lives right between Aylesbury and Heygate, I think the directors could have done a better job by actually showing what happens to the people who get kicked out of housing and the effects this has on their families.

      But I really wish more was done, I was expecting top boy blade runner personally, the best part of the movie was the gang who went out and stole food, I can’t remember the names. The movie should have been centred around them.

    The Kitchen was a wonderful movie but I hated the ending. I'm so over these ambiguous endings. We stick around for 2 hours (longer for some movies) only to be forced to drum up our own conclusion. It's so annoying. It seems like more and more film makers are going this route.

  • @jayabreezy1256
    @jayabreezy1256 4 месяца назад +72

    Ok so the film is basically about a man that for whatever reason didn't play a role in his sons upbringing and seems to care only for himself because he had to raise himself. We then spend the entire time waiting for him to open up and step up and lead the residents of The Kitchen in a last stand against those that wish to evict them. Instead we get the confession of him being the boys dad and his front door finally being breached. Maybe this is lined up for a second film, otherwise I feel i wasted my time watching this to the end because we already knew what the end revealed to us.

    • @isaacjantzen
      @isaacjantzen 4 месяца назад +8

      thats not the point, the ending isn’t supposed to be a reveal or twist or any other plot device. It is simply a powerful moment of vulnerability they share before their supposed detainment. which serves well imo.

      The film was well made, the acting was good, but we basically knew the story when the father first met the boy, we knew he was his father, but we expected more from the movie. I for one thought Kano was going to stand up for the kitchen and lead the young rebels in a stand against those trying to evict them. Thats what I kept waiting for. the big raid when it was do or die and kano to become unselfish. Instead we find out he's the boy father which we already knew and his front door finally gets kicked in. Now it ended there so maybe there is a contract for a second film depending on how this goes, where kano breaks free with his son and he does lead a rebellion against the eviction. But the whole futuristic thing wasn't even worth it. The story was just about a dad who had a hard upbringing for whatever reason and became a absent father, then didn't apply for multi housing, thats the impression i got, so if the raid didn't happen when it did he would be leaving the kitchen to his single flat.

    I actually really enjoyed this film. I always like movies that have nothing really going on in them. Film like that have me watching them multiple times. I don’t know why but I really like slow paced movies. I enjoyed this film a lot. I was devastated at the loss of a certain footballer and the ending was upsetting. I grew to love Izi and Benji. I loved the sense of community when the police came and the skate rink. Everyone looked out for each other. We don’t know what happened at the end but if we saw the end of Lord Kitchener, I think we can assume the worst. It was an upsetting film. Even the group of guys Benji kept ending up with weren’t really bad guys. It was all love there. I will watch this one again.
    Also, I saw some parts of five million merits in this film which is fitting as Daniel Kaluuya was the main character in that Black Mirror episode. I didn’t really put two and two together until the end as I didn’t realise he was the producer until the end.

    I think the movie was all over tthe place. It opened story paths and never finished them. It wasted its time so much with empty scenes, where characters stand still for minutes on end. What happened to Benji's girlfriend? What happened to Jase and his Daughter? Where is Jase's wife? Why is the gang portrayed as villains in one scene, doing good in the other scene, acting like malcolm x in the 3rd scene and having fun in the 4th scene? What really happens to the trees? Why did Izi leave Benji the first time? That was so irritating.
    A classicals storytelling like benji getting into real trouble (like foreshadowed) and Izi coming and saving him or benji and his soon-to-be-girlfriend getting into trouble together and benji realizing his mistake and making the right choice of taking her and saving her and thus doing/learning something about responsibility or with a twist on the gang being portrayed as villains at the beginning and turning into antiheroes or or or.... would have been the far better choice imo.
    The movie was overall very bland, lackluster and mostly directionless. It had good visuals tho.

    • @briannnanicole
      @briannnanicole 3 месяца назад

      i think it’s pretty clear that the gang was never really portrayed as villains. i think izy just meant they are bad influences bcs they fight back and that could get them in lots of trouble.
      overall i think ur other questions are obvious. like the girlfriend- she doesn’t have parents anymore. she will probably become just like benji if she doesn’t have anymore family. will probably stay with friends, a gang, etc.
      jase and his daughter will most likely become homeless too, just like all the other ppl there that can’t afford somewhere else to stay.
      they were a community and at the end, they did what they always do. they continued to look out for each other. I feel like a lot of the questions ur asking are common sense and don’t need to be shown. it’s almost like ur expecting to be spoon fed the answers.

      @@briannnanicole hmm i dont feel that way. Like i said, the movie has no focus. It shows things and kinda forgets about them.
      Also not showing things in a movie just because some people find it obvious, misses the point of the whole thing being a movie. I watch it, to see things, things that are emotionally touching me. If you dont show any of your story paths to its end, you can stop watching it all together and trying to imagine what could be obvious to you.
      The movie tried too hard to be artsy and was kinda arrogant. It built a beautiful shell of what it could've been but the inside was empty.
      Its an ok first attempt of the director tho. I hope he comes down from his high horse and fleshes the story more out with intelligent content next time.

    They wouldn't have been killed just arrssted, the only person we actually see die from the police is lord kitchener and they only killed him because he was a powerful person in their community they wanted to send a strong message to the people of the kitchen, there would have been no reason for them to kill izi or benji as neither of them really seemed to be that influential among the people in the kitchen there is also the fact that benji technically wasn't even from the kitchen anyways and izi had also technically already left as he brought the apartment in the city so yea they would have just been arrested and very likely let go shortly after, izi might have been sent to jail for a few months for hitting the police officer with the big red key but yea there would have been no reason for them to die in the kitchen

    Am glad for this review, because the movie was confusing, i would have to watch it a few times to get it.
    What i really want to know is, what could of happend in 20 years time for it to be acceptable to do this, if that was explained the whole movie would make sence. This is not a movie you go into thinking you need to over think things.

    Spoiler**
    so all possible endings..
    1. unlikely but maybe the one knocking was the girl he liked or something trying to save them.
    2. police backup from the knocked out officer he fought right outside his door. (personally i think this was the reason and he was dumb for not moving the body if he was unconscious.)
    3. the gang leader snitched on the boy since we betrayed their morals, snitched to the police knowing he is most likely in the dad apartment.

    This movie (imo) had such a top boy-paralel universe type feel to it. Why does staples and izi have beef? (Like others has stated.) The movie was decent until, the ending. This should've been a show instead of a movie.

    It's fairly obvious to me that at some stage during the undoubtedly lengthy and tedious development process, some well-meaning white upper middle class gatekeeper/script editor/creative producer decided to strip out most of the story and entertainment value in order to make sure young black people in the UK do not miss the film's message: we don't like fun-loving black criminals, so get it together and grow up to be hardworking but struggling citizens who are quietly obedient when told that London is too good for you and it's time to move out to boring Croydon or Orpington.

    Ending was lazy, point blank we need a part 2 to redeem this movie. The ambiguous endings are cliche now and we want stories, dont need a happy endings but a ending. Please pick a side!

    This film was great at creating a real feeling for dystopian future, I felt like I was there. But in truth the film was a bit boring, I also found myself not sympathetic to that life, I just see them as people who refuse to work and contribute to society.
    As someone who came from poverty and areas like this, I worked my way out and bought myself a house - only to be surrounded by social housing people. It’s wrong to mix the classes people want out they will work for it. If they don’t, leave them there.
    It’s not fair that everyone in the middle takes the heaviest load.
