It’s early 2024 and guess what: I bought the Centaur! I have to say, it’s just a fantastic chess computer and worth while the money in my opinion. I was looking at other boards as well, but not needing any smartphone or app is just the only direction I wanted to go. This board will work just fine after a decade, and with smartphones and apps you never know how long they will be supported. Looking at the board itself, it’s amazing that you can do other moves than the computer is asking you to do, it will just accept and continue. Ideal for study. I’m not aware of any other boards doing that. The e-ink display is clear and almost use no battery power. And love how well the board recognizes the move of the pieces. So far not a single glitch, not even when doing multiple back moves. I use the board now every evening for a week, and still no need to charge.
Oh, and on Easy mode I am able to beat it when using the advice option now and then 😊 No chance of winning on Challenge level so far. But great adoption to my skill level.
Just bought Centaur as an 80th birthday present for myself. I used to play chess a lot in my teens at a club and for teams but I haven't played much since. Only recently have I become house bound and started playing again with computer apps etc.. I have played online a little and it was OK but not really what I was looking for. I have been involved in computers all my life and I really want to stop watching a screen. The idea of Centaur being like playing against a friend really appeals to me. I don't want to compete with other people at my time of life. I like the idea that the Centaur doesn't have an App and doesn't connect to the internet. I also like the idea that although it adapts to my play it will still be hard to beat. I need to re-learn how to really play not just get easy wins. Anyway I really enjoyed your review, you showed some things other reviewers didn't show. I hope I have chosen the right board.
The nice thing about the Centaur is that you can put aluminum stickers on the bottoms of any chess pieces and use those pieces instead of the ones that come with it. I make my own chess pieces so I can play using my own pieces. It's perfect for me as I have no desire to play people online. When I make a stupid move the Centaur doesn't laugh...it just pounces on me! :) Really like your videos.

after watching several reviews to learn all about it before it arrives , just wanted to share something that I learned . I noticed when you wanted to start from a position, that you picked out each piece one at a time and placed them into position. If you start out with all the pieces on their back lines , as if you were just about to start a new game , then you can individually move each piece to where you want it and then simply click on the ' start position ' in the menu to accept it . The board will recognize all the pieces all at once and know exactly where they are. hope this makes sense .
Love it. I use it with my triple weighted chess pieces. The only downside is the lack of a official Update-Option. As it is based on the Raspberry-Pi there could be so much great improvements down the line. Like managing different profiles. (My son has a different playing strength) Saving and Exporting your games. Having various computer opponents with different strategies and strength and weaknesses.

They can not reduce the price any time soon. The board is using a Raspberry Pi board inside and their prices are through the roof.

I have a Chessnut Air board...and i love It too....and i have a DGT smartboard that i use with the DGT pi......and why dont you make a vídeo talking about this 2 products?? Because i ever learn New things with your vídeos!! And i think that i could improve my experience with DGT smartboard and the DGT pi,of course with your help!!! Think about it!!! I have this dgt centaur chess board! It is so much fun! Its a nice size and has that LCD screen too! And you can charge it up and play out on your patio!

One thing no one ever talks about including the makers is,can you get a battery and change it ,as say,a retired engineer.
Do you need to buy a new board and trash the the board.
Thats what holding me back from buying any of them.batteries dont last forever ,and im not buying a new set everytime the battery fails or beeds to ve pluged in during play.
It’s a great board to play and learn very cool.

I think the take back feature is confusing. You need to determine which square the pieces can from and thus is not easy
If you're doing a review you could have found out how the scoring system worked, instead of just guessing. Otherwise a good review.
