the first time i saw this scene was a bootleg, but when the music slowed down, you could hear some little kid in the audience say “they’re gonna kill her...” like he was watching a horror movie💀💀
Lol! Well, he/she isn't too far off! CaTCF is pretty messed up even in the book where all the kids survive. The musicals take it up to 11 with their "punishments!" I don't know about you, but being made into fudge (I'm not clear on if Augustus lives or not, I haven't seen the musical), exploding, being torn into pieces all seem "a bit" extreme to me! Mike got off relatively easy, but even he is changed for life. The kids were bad to be sure, but I'm not sure MURDER is justified as Wonka could have easily not set the traps! 😂

i’ve always kind of thought that that was the point. the punishment of the “bad kids” has always seemed like more of a warning to parents than to children. because for as rude and mean as the kids are, in every adaptation, their downfalls reduce them to what they are: terrified children in the hands of a madman. in every adaptation, the child is punished, but it’s their respective parent who is forced to look on in horror. it’s always seemed like wonka’s message is: if you spoil, enable, and refuse to discipline your child, someone like me will come along and hurt them, because they aren’t smart enough to see past a temptation i can offer.”
@@mozambiquemorbid2441 true, I'm all for discipline to change bad behavior, and the parents definitely need a kick in the "tooshie" as the video put it, but yikes for the kids. The parents need the wake up call more so than the kids. In this version, did Verucka's dad meet the same fate like his prior incarnations did after his daughter?

Now, as it happens, he doesn’t. The squirrels tear Veruca “limb from limb” just as he enters the scene.
They should have either been more faithful to the book or made it clear enough that this play is completely inappropriate for kids. Why is a little kid in the audience watching this?

Veruca (and probably to her parents) may seen herself as Clara/Marie/The Sugar Plum Fairy in the Nutcracker ballet, however in reality for everyone else, especially to Wonka, the Squirrels and the Oompa Loompas she was Princess Perlipat from the original ETA Hoffman story

- Despite getting cured of her condition by Drosselmeyer's nephew, she was ungrateful towards the lad (who unfortunately contracted the Rat Queen's curse) to the point of banishing him from her castle.

I love how you can actually see the squirrels' eyes turning red along with the background toward the end. Really drives home what they're going to do to Veruca.

Like almost every other version either implies at least some chance of survival or they die off-screen/stage (or they come back at the end like when we did Willy Wonka in high school)
This one's just like "yeah no, let's just have these giant squirrels rip off her fucking limbs on stage."
And honestly......I kinda respect that.

I got to see this live and the energy in the theater when they dismembered her was amazing. A wonderful mix of horror and elation. Truly a one of a kind experience.

They didn't. They had a dummy prepared on the backstage. We have to teach these tricks to kids nowadays so they become at least a teensy bit interested in theatre. It's an awful amount of work to do something like that on stage go smoothly, you know.

- the leg is kinda shaky, probably means it's like fabric inside of the tights.
- how are they gonna break her by just streching her very slightly.
- she screams " daddy!" at the end, causing her to still he a living human.
- it would be illegal to kill someone on a stage due to kids and of course the actual person life.

I think they did the effect of her being torn apart via her going backstage on the conveyer belt than rushing to the other side backstage while she is swapped out for a dummy. You can see the squirrels puppeteering the dummy.

1- because in plays and musicals it is important to demonstrate the personality of the characters
whether in their dialogues, actions, their outfits, ETC.
Veruca wants to show that she is a spoiled and capricious girl.
