I love this riff its so fun to play over and over and get lost in the repetitious movements of this haunting melody. Johnny Marr manages to stir up some interesting emotions with his sophisticated sense of harmony.
Marr once said this was one of his favourite riffs with the Smiths and I can totally see why. It captures so poignantly the gloom and melancholy sound of the band and his guitar playing with them. I am amazed at maturity of the song's emotional expression of loneliness, despair, and an everlasting struggle with feeling life oh so deeply.
It’s a brilliant display of Marr’s complex simplicity. I love how its all in one spot on the neck and the figures only move as much as they need to. All the notes are right there available to all guitarists, but only Marr could pick them up and produce something so captivating!
Hats off to Marr, the deeper I look into his guitar playing the more layers I find of how impressive it is!
I probably should have played along to a metronome lol and I winged the guitar tone

I hope you enjoyed the video and if you were trying to play it on guitar i hope you found it helpful! If you have any questions by all means ask in the comments!
Thanks for watching!
It's amazing how this riff is so simple, yet so daunting to get right. That one note leading in, and the way he changes chords across the triplets is unique. Such an awesome songwriter.
I can say this - great job here. I learned the riff from the video and I can play it cleanly now. What's the catch?
I only have so many loops in me before I make a mistake. You tore through it this whole video cleanly. 3 or so loops through and I'm bound to mess something up. Always happens with Marr riffs.
Ill reply to both your messages! Firstly your enthusiasm is contagious! :) And totally this song stirs up such interesting emotions of meloncholy and longing. The implied chord progression under the melody is really interesting and it expresses Marr's sophistication with songwriting! I love how its all played in one spot on the neck and like with the minimal amount of finger movement, kind of like linking/bridging all the implied chords together! And thank you, it took a lot of practice to be able to play it over and over without making a mistake. Play it enough times and the melody becomes engrained in ur mind enough that your fingers start to follow the melody that rings in ur mind haha! Keep at it and i am sure you will get it down! I love to see that youve learnt the song too! Ive seen quite a few comments abput people saying they will learn the songs bc of the videos, but few come back reporting they learned it, so right on! Now can I ask you a question? Do you have a preference between me playing along to the song versus just playing the guitar part by itself like i did in this video?
@@nicholaskguitar I think, so long as the audio is balanced well, it helps to hear it against the backing track. I learned this song and Ask because of your videos helping make things clear.
You def make the best Smiths lessons, and I prefer you just playing to tabs. I don't need someone stopping every 5 seconds to tell me my ring finger needs to be on the A
5th fret A string, etc.
Keep doing what you're doing. I have no complaints apart from you playing like a machine and me inevitably flubbing notes lol. But that's always the case with Marr.
I was so happy the day I learned to play Some Girls are Bigger than Others. But equally annoyed that to this day, I will still mess it up somewhere.
That's awesome and incredibly rewarding for me to hear, thanks man!
and thanks for your feedback, I will keep that in mind!
Me too, Some Girls are Bigger Than Others has very tricky timing, but just makes it all the more satisfying to play! I've yet to play that one cleanly either haha. and the chorus is in it is another great example of that genius simplicity you were talking about and the riff is just so slick
such a beautiful melody
Great demo and a fitting example of how John McGeoch influenced JM
Great playing!
Thanks mate!
Loved this, much appreciated
Lo dijo Marr, fue su mejor balada..!👏🎸
Es el mejor videos de la historia
Great tutorial :)
Thanks Joaquin, I'm glad you think so! Good luck in your endeavours! :D
Hiya Nicholas, brilliant playing ! I’ve wanted to learn this song for years.
Did you learn this song by watching Johnny Marr play it? - as there is a vid of RUclips of him just playing the riff for about 30 seconds, or just by ear?
Thanks Hussain! I hope the video n tab helps! In terms of how i learned it, ya i watched that 30 second clip of Marr playing it, and used my ears to fill in the gaps where I couldn't see exactly what was being played.
@@nicholaskguitar that’s really awesome you saved me so much work great job man
@@santiagoperez870 that's awesome, glad i could help! 🫡 The riff is so satisfying to play! I love how all the notes are in one spot in the neck and the chord changes are just so emotionally impactful

👋 yoooo thanks for watching!!!
Is It Really so Strange? pliss I don't know where to find the chords
The chords are Em C Cm Bm B
What effects did you use?
Mainly I’m using my vox delaylab, with a low repeat time to get a spacey reverb tone and a tube screamer to beef it up a bit. The delaylab is a pretty multifaceted pedal, so I can’t say exactly how to recreate without that pedal. Maybe a chorus and a delay pedal would work. If you happen to have the delaylab, I can show you the settings I use!
@@nicholaskguitar Do you know what kind of reverb/delay?
Do you mean the settings i used on my delaylab pedal? Or like what pedals could achieve that sound?
@@nicholaskguitar I mean the type of reverb (room, spring, hall, plate, etc), or the type of delay (single, tape, modulate, etc) :)
Oh gotcha thanks for the clarification! I'm not very versed when it comes this stuff haha. I believe it's a modulation Delay FX
In terms of the reverb, anything that adds wetness/sustain will do to beef up the delay. Maybe not spring because the sound of the coil can be undesirable way in this case.
On a somewhat related note of FX, i recently picked up a Roland JC Amp, which Marr used a lot with Smiths. :O
It sounds incredible, instant Smiths guitar sound! I was thinking of doing a demo reel playing it but my main focus is finishing next cover
