Actually I think they're cleaning their skin too. The water pressure when it comes down has to be knocking things off of them

That was my idea too. Like scratching an itch and the best way to do it is flopping hard against the surface of the water.

    Maybe there are multiple reasons.
Could it be that at different times, they use it to get a better view around, to play/have fun, to show off to potential mates, or to get rid of external parasites?
Humans can run, for example, but they don't always run for one reason only.

36 years ago, when I was 16, I went with my English class to New Bedford, Mass (from Connecticut) to go on whale watching trip. We'd just read Moby Dick, which is set in New Bedford. We were lucky to see several whales breach. I had no idea it would a transporting spiritual experience that I would never forget.

I think that the breaching is as a warning not to get too close. You will notice that a lot of breaching seems to be when we whale watch, so I think they are letting people know like other wild animals not to get too close. And I think due to mating, they are showing their size off.

When I was much younger while livening along the coast of south Australia we were amazed by two female humpbacks and their young water bombing(breaching). Mum called up some wild life mob and told them about it. While I was at school ( Dam it! I would have loved to talk to him my self )were visited by this guy and he gave my Mum to give to me papers on the different types etc..oh it was awesome to say the lest. We were warned thoe not to go out there in a boat while they were there because it was pretty dangerous really. They stayed and played for two weeks just doing their thing. I Loved every bit of it. What a wonderful memory I have.

Personally, I think all those theories could be true. They could be doing any of those things, catching a breath of air very quickly, just having fun, or trying to attract a mate. They could all be perfect explanations as to why whales breach.

I fell in love with the sound of Whales, when I was a very young (other side of todler) little girl. The Old Harbour Museum in Hermanus was home to a fascinating Whale Section.
The great big beautiful highlight for me, and a memory that would become forever imprinted deep within me, was reaching way up, to press the Whale Sound Button on the wall.
    And "REPEAT" :).
Listening to these gentle giants speak, with their voices travelling so clearly, so far underwater, was like a pure miracle to me.
And I recall the overwhelming sense of connection to the WONDER (of LIFE) I FELT.
Ears pitched, as if it was yesterday.
It breaks my heart that so many of these beautiful beings are dying off in their numbers.
And at a FAR MORE ALARMING rate than you have been told.
    ALL AROUND THE GLOBE.
What really gets me down (& in truth, slightly infuriated) is that SO MANY HUMANS, who know the EXACT TRUTH about, and REAL KEY REASON** behind these rapid die offs (and washing up of whales on our beaches), CHOOSE TO REMAIN SILENT.
Even more saddening, is that these real KEY reason(s) are in fact HIDDEN from the public, by those very individuals & (so called environmental) organisations, who have taken on the OFFICIAL ROLE OF PROTECTING NATURE & MARINE LIFE (& nogals earns a pay cheque for said "ROLE").
    WHY?
Because the (global big spOIL owned) GOVERNMENT, WHO ARE THE ONES DOING ALL THIS DAMAGE, SAID SO.
I trust and pray you can hear my plea.

Non of them neither correct true reason whales breach is this Whales breach ( or flipper-slap/tail-breach/etc) to help rid themselves of parasites. Whales, Humpback Whales especially, sometimes carry a variety of external (as well as internal) parasites that may cause itching and irritation to their sensitive skin.

The marine mammal protection acts states that boats have to be at least 300 yards away from all whales. So when a lot of cases I'm sure these whales are hopping out as a bit of intimidation to these boats and to tell them to back the hell off.

Whale breaching. Could the rapid change in water pressure as the whale moves from several hundred feet down up into free air give the whale a sort of adrenaline rush (similar in intensity to a hit with the whale equivalent of cocaine)?
Tail-Slapping. Could the pressure wave from a tail-slap cause a ripple in the whale's blubber as it passes from the tail along the body, resulting in the whale equivalent of a tickle?
Stop killing whales by mistake. Large ships should carry an underwater speaker which makes a repeated sequence of high-frequency pulses (like navigation clicks used by dolphins) to warn whales of approach. Whales would soon learn the meaning of this particular set of clicks and know to get out of the way.
Some think it's "whale peacocking" when it's mating time. If that's the case then could it be that the change in water pressure makes them feel horny?
