Australia’s only licensed electric plane is breaking world records | ABC Australia

    Adelaide-based Eyre to There Aviation has set out on a pioneering trip around rural South Australia, and along the way broke a world endurance record for an electric aircraft with a 7-day, 25-stop flight.
    The Pipistrel Alpha Electro plane is the only commercial electric plane in Australia.
    As with electric cars its batteries need regular recharging. On this trip a team of two other planes and two support vehicles met the plane at airstrips with a generator to recharge the Electro.
    Nicknamed “Bobby”, it had to land and recharge every 35 to 45 minutes.
    Finding runways in the bush and outback was a challenge, with the team compiling a report to send to the State Government assessing the most suitable airports for recharging facilities.
    Eyre to There managing director Barrie Rogers said electric planes were quieter, more economical and greener than conventional planes, and would be more common in the future.

    The diesel generator inefficiently burns the fuel to fly......

      Agreed, however, there needs to be an experimental phase, and it doesn't make sense to build renewable charging infrastructure for undeveloped tech. The same goes for cars, but I could do without the sanctimonious blather from the drivers about their "clean" electric cars, ignoring that their shiny new Tesla is likely powered by the dirtiest fossil fuels available, brown and black coal. In time, electric tech will develop, but it's a long way off yet.

      Long term they will build a larger version and it will be recharged by Solar as all of Australia will be eventually.

      @@Jesse-B it would be awesome to have a plane that your gonna use everyday to be able to constantly recharge itself, alot of people with tesla cars dont charge them up or they forget or some sillyness,i mean if i had a daughter id much rather she have a car that uses the suns energy to recharge itsself, no worries about them breaking down anywhere,why cant they just build it into the paint job? the solar panels i mean, it would be really really cool to drive your tesla all day long and get home at 8pm, look at your battery and still have 98% lol

      The Wright flyer could only fly for one minute. Technology has to start somewhere.

    If this is the future of aviation I'm walking! What if they encounter a storm? Flying time down to 15 minutes.

      It's one of the first electric aircraft... once higher energy density batteries and chemistries are developed and incorporated, they'll be able to compete with traditional aircraft better. There are already potential candidates. Give it time.

      I don't know how it works in Australia. In Europe it is a certified general aviation aircraft. It can do anything any other GA aircraft can.

    it they can make this super light you wouldnt need to use the engine full time you could glide through the air and just use the motor when you need to climb and take off saving BATTERY life forsure! also why is there no solar panels on the top wings?, f(*& it heres a hint,why not make SOLAR PANEL wings?????????? planes dont fly higher than the sun, be CREATIVE :)

      For the same reason cars don't have solar panel hoods: very little area, that wouldn't really contribute much to the aircraft's range. Plus, if you want to reduce the weight, adding solar panels and the controllers and power converters that have to go with them, isn't the way to do it...
      Further, it can't fly as a glider as part of the standard operating procedures, as you're suggesting, and be a certified aircraft, since planes have to guarantee that they can maintain an altitude or flight level with minimal deviation, especially in controlled airspaces.
      Furthermore, if you look at the Velis Electro's flight manual (available for free at the manufacturer's website) the standard operating procedure for the descent is to descend with the power at 0% (or to turn the engine off, in other words).
