Over a decade ago, this was the first song I heard from my now favorite band. Can't understand why they haven't reached Arcade Fire level success. Will's lyrics cut to the bone...
Watching this video back as an adult gives it such a harder edge. My take now is that the young boy has an abusive father and turns into a monster himself, because of how he was mistreated (the father "transmits" the music to him and he changes, like the cycle of abuse). He finds a girl and hurts her, but she gets him to open up and remember the hurt child within himself (cutting him out of the monster's heart), and they run away. But even when the reach a better place together (the meadow), they are still being chased by his inner demons, and by the abuse of his father. Maybe it's impossible that either one of them will ever escape it. Heavy stuff man :(
As an aside... Please remember that no one can really "fix" or save someone who is abusive. Only they can fix themselves, and they really have to want to. Please always take care of yourselves first out there friends :)
wow, intense. Will Sheff is pretty fearless in his art. that's what makes it so brilliant. you can feel it even without the video/ or deconstructing the lyrics.
I think this is the best song he has ever written. It is quite simply one of the best pieces of songwriting in the last 10 years. Graphic, vulnerable, brutally honest lyrics that border on insanity yet seem so relatable.. "I need to know your not lying.. cause I want to see you tried...Cause theres nothing quite like the blinding light curtains cast aside". Is this really me. As if with every chord he violently strums, a knife is swung and the truth for all to bear. Yes I am a normal person
Thank you Saints row 2 to introduce this music in Underground radio,This music always playing in the Frat row Crib.. i like this song with the Guitar theme, and the Lyrics.
Still one of my favorite songs. Over the years I've attached it to "Tne Great Gatsby" in my mind somehow. Its the line "If you really wanna see what matters most to me, just take a real short drive" that did it. Sounds like the inside of Gatsby's mind about Daisy.
I've been a massive River fan since 2006. I love how Will writes such brutally honest yet beautifully painful songs, lyrics that stick with you all your life 'if you're really finally mine I need to know that your not lying' the song goes into such depth about how he wants something so bad but doesn't think he deserves it. They get compared to Arcade Fire, Radiohead and the such but in my opinion Arcade Fire made 2 good albums, Radiohead is a band that is an acquired taste (or it's cool to say I like Radiohead) but some of their songs are so inaccessible. Okkervil just make tune after tune yet neither music or lyrics suffer for it. A band for all occasions, slow dancing, night driving, air guitar rock jumping in your bedroom, new love, broken heart and let's no forget SHIPS!!! Love you guys so much.
Same I was playing this on my moms phone at first because I wanted to play minecraft too then it did AND WHILE MAKING THIS IS HAPPEND!!!!! GOD DANG IT!!😝😝😝😝😝
I saw this the day after my birthday in 2006 it was one of the most depressing years of my life. I saw it on this channel. I was born on Friday April the 13. Day two. This song really helped me out.
not me but my little girl loves this song to so I just think about her and how much it would freak her out to see any wounds on me, it works. The lyrics really sound a lot like someone who is self destructive and in a self destructive relationship or friendship. These kind of things can take the place of cutting/burning but are just as bad. I gave up the up the mutilation for a abusive relationship, but it's still a form of hurting yourself; but it's so addictive a feeling.
@caineybailey7 Its about wanting to feel real. He begins with an unshakable desire to feel alive "Some nights I thirst for real blood.. it really fills my mind". He taunts others "really want to see what matters most to me... take a short drive". He goes on to describe these thoughts with an almost vibrant enthusiasm and then it climaxes with him embracing this as he bears himself to everyone "nothing quite like the blinding lights.. curtains cast aside". You cant hide caineybailey7
love this song, only problem is it reminds me of my terrible addiction to self mutilating. When I get stressed i have to never do any of that again. I have nasty scars that make me feel uncomfortable around other mom's, ashamed. But it's an addiction, just listening to the beginning of this song makes me excited in a sick way. i control myself now, but i wonder if other people feel the same way when they hear it, people who have done this kinda thing or still are doing it.
@@kevinb1776 it’s been 11 yrs since I left that comment and I haven’t hurt myslef in that time. And I’ve had some sht to deal with. I still have a lot of scars but I live with them. Idk if this will help or if you even want it, but I know we all have demons that we have to fight, & I’ve found that for me the best way to fight them is to find something outside myslef to focus on. It’s easy to get to in your own head & wallow in negative impulses. Finding something you’re passionate about can give you something to focus on. For me it was my kid and a couple of personal interests. I can be kind of single minded when I’m interested in something and I go with it. I’ll admit it can be hard as I still have all those things inside of me that made me cut and burn myslef. Sometimes I feel separated from my emotions and I struggle to find joy in anything, but I keep trying. But yeah just remember you’re more then the darker impulses.
last year came upon a video that had this amazing band playing in the back i have no idea the name of the band nor the video all i remember is it had a little rabbit running around animated of course if you know the name of the band of video pleas comment

yep, but I do like the really small venues my guy plays in..
Amazing song... But changes to much in volume between the lower and higher parts.... Hard to find a middle, its either to low or to high...

This song resonated so hard like 10 years ago. And today, I like this way just fine.
For real has been 1 of my for real favorite songs through my later 20's, 30's and now
The sounds just remind me to survive through plague the metal riffs of lights turning on and overcoming darkness
Still one of my favorite songs. Over the years I've attached it to "Tne Great Gatsby" in my mind somehow. Its the line "If you really wanna see what matters most to me, just take a real short drive" that did it.

I should have mentioned this 15 years ago, but this song is really great. Sorry for the delay.
That guitar riff (I think it's what it is) freaked me out when I first heard this song!
Same I was playing this on my moms phone at first because I wanted to play minecraft too then it did AND WHILE MAKING THIS IS HAPPEND!!!!! GOD DANG IT!!😝😝😝😝😝
Brilliant song by a brilliant band and a brilliant video. Bloody love Okkerville River
Que gran banda Okkervil river, todos buenos temas, este es uno de los especiales para mi.
This is a great song and easily one of my favorite songs.
Heard it in Saints Row 2 Amazing song
i knew this sounded familiar
I remember doing drug dealing activity with Luz while hundreds of Ronin chased us, praying that the car would not explode. Memories...
Nikki, I'll always remember sitting on that bed with you and listening to this. I always loved you. I hope you're still alive and well and happy.
I remember this song and video vividly from my childhood- was Instantly in love with this song from the moment I first heard it
Black Sheep Boy is among the best cathartic works of all time.
I saw this the day after my birthday in 2006 it was one of the most depressing years of my life. I saw it on this channel. I was born on Friday April the 13. Day two. This song really helped me out.
Black Sheep Boy is up there with The Wall as an amazing cathartic work.
Best version of this song: "Okkervil River - "For Real" (Live at WFUV)"
You can't hide, you can't hiiide,you can't hide
Great song with a very origanal clip. Love all their albums. Great band (a bit like bright eyes).
I also am a "cutter". I haven't done it in 3 years. When the urge comes on, I listen to this song. Somehow it makes the feeling go away.
o wow 15 years ago.. i just now randomly found this and i love it
I feel bad for The 81 people that dislike this
Its been a while since i heard this one... so great
Heard this song. Thought it was Dear and the Headlights. Googled lyrics. Found new (old) cool band.
Omg i loved this as a teenager

1:50 This sounds exactly like QoTSA - If I had a tail, which obviously came later.
Real music from real instruments, very nice, speaks a thousand words as always :-)
I wish it were safe enough to walk this late at night. Thanks meth.
I've said for years that if I have a tombstone, I want it to say "There's nothing quite like the blinding light that curtains cast aside."
This time a girl saves a boy, I love this.
/b/ brought me, and I'm glad it did.

I have never self harmed but I feel the exact same way about the song’s opening as I relate it to violent thoughts/fantasies. Excited in a sick way.

Amazing song!!
I'M IN LOVE.
You're right. It's too sacred to be picked apart and hung up to dry by the general public ;)
This video reminds me of the video for the song "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect" by The Decemberists.
This song came up on public access one night and scared me emotionally i had to toughen up when i was like 15 but life kept being so brutal
