We closed the Great Central Main Line Railway in 1966. That railway would have done the job of HS2: Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, London Marlybone. It was very useful, engineered for fast trains - and it was paid for. However, Ernest Marples, the then Minister of Transport was partner in a road - building conpany: the M1, Preston Bypass, Hammersmith Flyover - lucrative prestige contracts, which showed an obvious conflict of interest. Shameful.
@@seantaylor8162 And then Doctor Beeching was hired in to take the blame. Even now I can't understand why the 1963 plan for railway closures wasn't examined more thoroughly, because it: Put more cars onto more roads, Damaged businesses - including steel - producers and train builders, Created ring - roads which destroyed historic town centres and their shops etc. ... I'm sure that people can think of many more problems that were created by this criminally irresponsible decision.

I am also rather curious about those on the receivng end of our cash for a much disputed multi-interest undertaking which might be seen as little more than an overblown vanity project, basically saving a very modest amount of journey time.
