    We closed the Great Central Main Line Railway in 1966. That railway would have done the job of HS2: Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, London Marlybone. It was very useful, engineered for fast trains - and it was paid for.
    However, Ernest Marples, the then Minister of Transport was partner in a road - building conpany: the M1, Preston Bypass, Hammersmith Flyover - lucrative prestige contracts, which showed an obvious conflict of interest.
    Shameful.

Even now I can't understand why the 1963 plan for railway closures wasn't examined more thoroughly, because it: Put more cars onto more roads, Damaged businesses - including steel - producers and train builders, Created ring - roads which destroyed historic town centres and their shops etc. ...
      I'm sure that people can think of many more problems that were created by this criminally irresponsible decision.

      Every one will travel on it as the people using the existing WCML will have to use the HS2 route as all trains from the West Midlands and the North will be diverted onto the HS2 line

    Rail bosses at HS2 have spent some of the money on a big slice of woke pie. They have had training sessions for all the workers on unconscious bias. They also delivered an inclusive leadership workshop for their top 60 technical leaders 😂 Well woopy bloody do! How about they spend the money on what it's supposed to be spent on building a railway line

    They should have scrapped all of the HS2 , it would be far better electifying other lines and improving others . Certainly a better way than saving a few minutes on an existing service .

    I wonder why the work didn't give priority to the northern links rather than the line out of London and the home counties, with all the cost and horrendous disruption caused by the work needed for the latter. I am also rather
    curious about those on the receivng end of our cash for a much disputed multi-interest undertaking which might
    be seen as little more than an overblown vanity project, basically saving a very modest amount of journey time.

    What could you of done with £30billion? How about build something like the Japanese Chuo Shinkansen Maglev.
    Tokyo to Nagoya. Construction started in 2013 and is on schedule for completion in 2027, though there has been a recent holdup. 90% underground. 286km (178 mile) journey will take 40 minutes travelling at 505kph (314mph). And if my currency conversion is correct all for just under the equivalent of £28 billion.

    Any government giving £30b to the north hahahah. Never going to happen! Have you seen how beautiful and updated Kings Cross and St Pancras look. Both had ~£1b each spent on them. Now look at the north at somewhere like York with a historical large station that is completely dilapidated. Never will it have anywhere near that money spent on it.

    It's insane. There's already a London-Birmingham line. I'm on it (the Northampton branch). This new line is completely useless, the reduced journey time being insignificant.

      Well from Birmingham to London by LNWR via Northahampton takes over 2 hours, by HS2 it will take 50 mins at 225 mph so simple and not completely buseless to us Brummies and Northerners who use Avanti West Coast Trains

    This useless project has been a nice little earner for foreign companies- tunnel boring machines, concrete tunnel segments, civil engineering, the rails, and of course the trains. Also, as revealed in the press today, a nice little earner for the directors of HS2.
    Meanwhile, my local area cannot get the rail enhancements needed because (surprise!) there is no money left.

    Scrap HS2 and turn it into a high speed motorway. Toll road, few junctions, higher speed limits, high quality services with chargers etc. Like France and most of western Europe.

      It was not started in London, most of the major construction work was started in Birmingham constructing the line North to Lichfield and South to London and in between plus some construction work in London area and why should HS2 have started in Leeds when the real reason of HS2 was to ease up the congested WCML from Crew to London.

    HS2 might have cost £30B to build if they had continued with the original plans. Then lots of it were forced into tunnels rising the costs exponentially. HS2 costs more per mile to build than any other rail project in the world. Don’t let the Tories near the Railways.

      I believe HS2 was always primarily to extend the dormitory area for London and cement the primacy of Heathrow while looking like expenditure for the North - a neat con trick. NPR is the development we need here in the North.

      @@grahamlongley8298 The only control he has is over Transport for London and the Underground and London Buses, he has no more control over HS2 than Andy Street the West Midlands Mayor and the HQ of HS2 ltd is in Birmingham not London, it s just the final destination of HS2
