GENIUS! Brilliant virtuosity in every measure. Both Tierney's magnificent and spot-on playful vocal stylings and the pianist, who's playing is miraculous--he looks as though each hand belongs to a different human. Delicious--I teared up--it was that amazing.
I was just going to comment on the pianist when I noticed Nick Moore's comments, so I will just agree that he is Killer... i personally will send any of the 15 dislikes a pack of Q-tips...I have only recently been acquainted with Tierny through my new Sirius XM subscription...to be blunt, I'd marry her in a heartbeat, just to hear sing live everyday...
@LIQUIDJAZZ I wholeheartedly agree. The first time I run across this video was when I was researching this standard for my repertoire. I now play it every night at "my" restaurant. This version is one of the best I've heard of this song. Victor
Yes, he is. And here's a fun little factoid: He (Christian Jacob) is the husband of one of my childhood friends, Wilder (Ferguson) Jacobs; Who happens to be the daughter of the late, great/brilliant trumpeter, Maynard Ferguson. - Such talent among all of them.
Tierney's on the top tier with a mere several other vocalists, perhaps distinguished by her understanding of the singular brilliance of the Sinatra/Riddle tone poems of the Capitol years. Still, Roberta keeps looming larger as the complete musician, embodying the African-American art form in its entirety, making a point of seeking out and playing with all the greats--from Griffin to Jimmy Woode--before they passed. James Moody and Hank Jones were sincere in their calling her the best since Ella.
@ThatMysteryPianist I don't know anything about her as a person, so I can't comment on her being self-absorbed or dismissive of the audience. And I wholeheartedly agree that this does not swing. At all. (I don't quite see why a flat tire swings less than an inflated one, though.) But I also think her ability is clearly above average, and that even if you think this is not properly jazz or something, it's not hard to see why many (certainly not all) fans of jazz vocalists are also fans of her.
✭✭✭✭✭ Though I didn't see one, Mr. Jacob no doubt keeps a pitcher of ice cold water near by to pour on his piano when the keys start to smoke. Can't be too careful ya know. :-)
I get no kick from champagne, Mere alcohol, Doesn't thrill me at all, So tell me, why should it be true, That I get a kick out of you. Some get a kick from cocaine, I'm sure that if, I took even one sniff, It would bore me terrifically, too, Yet I get a kick out of you. I get a kick every time I see you, Standing there before me, I get a kick though it's clear to see, You obviously don't adore me. Some get a kick in a plane, Flying too high, With some gal in the sky, Is my idea of nothing to do, But I get a kick out of you. I get a kick...out of you.
@ThatMysteryPianist - I don´t understand wy keep secret about your knowledge. Normally it´s something to share with people. So tell us about these musicians you´ve played. Tell us who are those "swing deeply" singers...
Everyone's allowed their opinion! Personally, I find this easier to listen to if I'm not watching her. I don't feel much in the way of warmth or communication in her performance, which is why I scrolled down to read the comments...I then found it less clinical and more enjoyable to listen too.
@ThatMysteryPianist really? I mean, the people who gave her a record deal and the incredible musicians who play with her don't seem to think so. Maybe you should share your infinite wisdom with them, I'm sure they wouldn't want to stay with her once they know the truth. it's really not fair to keep them in the dark any longer. by the way, who have you played with?
The reason may be that like most vocalists she cultivates her rhythm section and crafts original arrangements that are executed with unfailing, predictable precision. But Ella was like the great musician who simply laid it on the line, trusting their chops and knowledge of the jazz tradition to stay even with or out-create the withering competition that had joined them on the bandstand. Tierney is extremely good and polished, but Gambarini is like Bird or Diz, willing to risk it all each time.
@kryzay311 My wisdom is not infinite but I am quite sure of my experience with her. Obviously, I am being ugly here, not really identifying myself (thus the moniker) so sorry if my comments you find offensive. As for 'the people who gave her a record deal' are concerned, you obviously have no experience dealing with folks from record labels...mostly a bunch of numbers crunchers and not musicians. And, by the way, I've played with far better musicians than theselong before these kids were born.
Christian Jacob...piano powerhouse....I always try and get a view of the keyboard whenever I see the Tierney Sutton Band play...amazing band
Tierney is one of the best current jazz vocalists! I get a 'kick out of' her for sure!

Yep, he sure plays a mean piano.
