So, I don’t know if this is proven, but there’s a theory that paper & book accumulation may be a sign that their family history includes deep appreciation of the written word. It doesn’t help with the clutter, but it may come from a good place. That’s what I tell myself lol.
That’s so interesting - I’m definitely overcompensating for the lack of written records in my family. I don’t even have photos of whole people 🥺 so my descendants will get these Trader Joe’s receipts and therapy notes by FORCE!

I’m enjoying your declutter journey. As someone who LOVES organization, it’s fun to watch others go down the rabbit hole of how much stuff they actually have and how to “reorganize” it 😜. Anywhozulbees, a paper shredder is not only efficient but therapeutic; also makes great packing cushions. Can’t wait to see the skeletons hiding in that closet!💀🩻🫣😂
The jazz and paper ripping! And asmr *chefs kiss* My paper organizing tricks: I open my mail outside my apartment or at the door. Anything that is useless gets chucked the second i walk in. I leave the important ones by my computer If theres paper i want to save for whatever reason or may need later. I take a picture and throw away thats future me’s problem to deal with the digital clutter.
Hi Evelyn! For all incoming papers (receipts, mail, documents, etc) you could try placing them in a shallow paper tray. It could be a colorful paper tray so it can catch your attention. But the important thing is to put in a visible spot. I go over my paperwork weekly and that has helped me a lot. Hope that helps!
I recently decluttered a few huge, heavy bags full of papers; diary entries, receipts, sticky notes with movie reccomendations 😩 names of books, shows, movies, songs that ppl gave me… old pieces of art, scribbles, paintings, business cards, newspapers… it can be quite nostalgic & depressing, but freeing to let these go.
This was wonderfully chaotic. My best advice for paper is to leave things that need to be addressed in a somewhat triggering location for you (I leave things that I need for upcoming appointments by the front door on a little table, I leave bills that need to be addressed on my coffee table because these are places I like to look neat and tidy and the clutter forces me to take action so I can get back my clean surface. Good luck with that closet!! 😂😂
I buy post cards from places that I visit too. I use them as decor. I have little frames that I have them displayed in. I keep my extra postcards in an old photo album. *(feels old)* I switch out the postcards every once in a while. Im loving this decluttering series. Thanks for sharing the journey with us!
I’m in the process of cleaning out a large closet in my house that I’ve lived in for 17 years. Going through paper was super time consuming, but necessary because I found so much with personal information that needed to be shredded. Also I had books from undergrad and grad school that I never opened again. I found two landline phones. I honestly feel like I’m being set free with each bag of clutter I throw out. Your videos have been therapeutic and serve as confirmation that I’m doing the right thing. Thank you, Evelyn.

Lesson learned; the big task needs to be divided into smaller, more manageable tasks. Thanks for the motivation to get back on the horse! The only recommendation I have is to use the accordion file you want to donate to house all your important papers so it’s all in one place. You can create sections for finances, medical, receipts, etc. Then, store your scripts in sheet protectors in the binder along with other mementos. That way there are only two places for paperwork

This is so fun and inspirational to watch and I did manage to deal with some digital clutter that needed attention! If you want an on the wall solution that's not tape hanging a pretty clipboard can work well, when its empty its something you like to look at (can buy a pretty one or just cover the front of a boring one with art you like and laminate / tape it down). And when you put something on it its still very visible and stays in your attention, and when dealt with you get your pretty art back. I love nothing more than a system and thought that one might suit you. Truly loving the progress and process of these videos.
hey evelyn, do you have a productivity system? like what do you use to balance various tasks and projects as someone who works for themselves/at home? edit: other cousins - if y'all got systems you can suggest, please do? i need the help lol
Yes! Most important thing to accept is that productivity systems should be flexible and can change according to your needs. So in 2020 I needed a bullet journal and Trello/Asana. In 2022 I needed a virtual assistant who could talk me through things. These days I just use a white board, GCal, and a handwritten to do list. So step 1: brain dump everything you want to do Step 2: write down every single step involved as a separate task Step 3: determine how long it takes to complete each task. You can take a week to track your time for hard data. Step 4: you can now place tasks on the calendar/project management service according to how long it’ll take. This take a while to do. Step 5: execute and readjust if your initial predictions were way off. Step 6: understand life is about constantly readjusting it literally never ends. Step 7: be intentional about how you acknowledge/celebrate completing things or else you’ll feel like a workhorse Good luck! 💞✨
