The Greene-Jones War

  • In the 1880s and 1890s a bloody feud was happening across two Appalachian counties, with conflicts over hogs, shootings, ambushes, cabins set on fire and the threat of the governor to call in the state militia to stop it.
This feud was NOT between the Hatfield and McCoy families in Kentucky and West Virginia. This one was about a hundred miles to the southwest, in Hancock and Hawkins counties in Tennessee and was so violent it's remembered as the Greene-Jones War instead of the Greene-Jones Feud.
    Today we tell that story.
If you'd like more information about this fascinating part of Appalachian history, check out this website which contains a detailed account of the feud: www.wikitree.c....

Decendant of the Greene Jones War. My mother was Brenda Kay Greene. I had come across a copy of a hand written version of this story in some ancestory documents my mother gave me. I do not recall all details, now i am going to have to find it. I am certain it was much less detailed than your podcast. Thank you for the reaearch and fantastic telling of history.

Wanted to say handwritten - probably by an uncle during one of his research trips to the area.

Funny story about my grandma Vivian Fern seal. When I was about 10 years old I was watching cartoons after school and my grandmother told me Junior go get your shower. I said Grandma I'm watching cartoons. I will take my shower when the cartoons are over. She said quickly I said go get your shower. She had a Red Ryder BB gun sitting next to her chair. That she used to shoot dogs that would come in the yard stray dogs. I got up and headed toward the back door to the Wash House and she shot me in the rear end going out the back door. Next time grandma said Junior get your shower she didn't have to say it a second time. Not trying to make light of the feud or the killings that took place in the lives that we're lost. But she did tell me twice LOL. Hopefully that'll make some people laugh anybody that might be a descendant or a relative of either side hopefully that doesn't offend.

Most people in East Tennessee were free ranging animals. People had fences around homes and fields to keep animals out. Mr. Greene should have fixed his own dang fence.

Rev William Trent Green had sons Richard and Robert, but not Alfred. The Robert and Alfred of the Greene-Jones war video were William's brothers, not his sons. Susan "Sookie" was his sister. The Richard "Dick" Greene who led the feud was not his son. He was William's nephew, the son of his brother, James. I know because I am also a descendant of William Trent Green, though his daughter, Elizabeth.

This was one of the worst feuds we've told about, because it all just seemed to be about revenge and not about resources or political power like most of the others. Thanks for watching!
