There were Peppers in Rural Retreat. I had ancestors there and I believe one of them married a Pepper.

Lived in Wytheville for years and now have a son and his family live in Rural retreat. I always thought the drink was made there 😊

Who remembers Apple Beer? It had no alcohol in it. Just a great soda. I loved it.

Also, a couple of ideas to go through is the Mother's Day house and the Transatlantic Lunatic Asylum

I had always believed it was originally a prune juice based laxative developed at a drugstore, and one day some soda was squirted into a glass of the laxative concoction by accident. (Drug stores often had soda fountains). That's why it had 10 - 2 - 4 on the bottle cap. 3 doses a day to stay regular. 10am 2pm and 4pm. but people liked the taste or the soda infused mixture so much it became a popular soft drink. I heard that story in the early 1960's

Dr Pepper is very hush hush about their soda formula, so what you heard is as good a story as to what’s in it as any other.

I heard the prune juice story growing up in Roanoke, VA where they sold more Dr. Pepper than anywhere outside of Texas. I can remember touring the bottling plant on a field trip in the 1950's. The building still stands with its outdoor clock bearing only the numerals 10, 2, and 4. Does anyone else remember the 1960's ad campaign for drinking hot Dr. Pepper in a coffee cup?

It's unfortunate that many people don't realize that Dr. Pepper is their own company even though they are delivered by both Pepsi and Coca-Cola.

Dr.Pepper is older than Coca Cola, by a year or two and before that the drink Moxie is older you can find Moxie in the New England area 😮

I almost got in a fight in Waco Texas when I proudly announced Dr. Pepper was invented in Rural Retreat Virginia, be careful in Texans they don’t take kindly to us easterners bringing truth to the West🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂, I did go to the Dr. Pepper museum and my family abandoned me when they overheard Magnolia Fixer Upper thingy was in town!

Grand granny and her husband Jay Double You would make a big breakfast. They get done eating breakfast they'd start making a great big ol' lunch. Why? They had visiting company. But all the drink that meant anything to any of them was dr pepper. Someone would walk in the house Grand granny would say get a good dr and sit down with us. Jay Double You would agree and say yeah sit down and take the load off.

I moved to Rural Retreat as an out of towner about 4 years ago. No connection to the town at all. I moved here for a job. I will be honest and say i do NOT like the taste of Dr. Pepper. That was nearly fightin words here in RR. I have gotten very engaged in the town and its history. I have discovered there is a lot of bad feelings when it comes to the 2 stories. RR has taken credit as the original birthplace of Dr. Pepper. They have classic signs up. They have named the stage they use for their Heritage day after it. They also have a Dr. Pepper festival (a very small one).
