awd lifted Sienna would be my pick if only it could get a little more than 23mpg and I think Sienna is probably more reliable long term; Outback can easily get 26 and is probably the only car that has that capability, fuel economy and size; And as far as trucks go, not willing to settle for darn 11mpg; Thats crazy; It would be cheaper to fly and then rent a jeep at a location where you plan to go adventuring
10/10 the best car video I’ve ever watched this video was exactly what I needed when looking for a vehicle. I found a 2012 outback with 50,000 miles for $12k and it’s been awesome. Very off road capable as well as on road manners. Thank you for this video
This video helped me on my final decision for my next vehicle... I just bought a 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i manual and after driving it for a couple days I gotta say, you are right! Now I gotta lift it!
My wife and I just bought a 2011 2.5 premium. It is hands down one of the most capable vehicles out there. It soaks up bumps like they aren't even there, yet it is rigid enough to handle moderate trails in stock form. I will be buying another one when budget allows
2018 Jeep Compass 4x4 (not a trail hawk). Like you gets me and my family to off the beaten path places for weekend adventures, but great for being my daily commuter. I to also purchased the Rola roof rack basket for the same reasons you mentioned. I have had it for almost a year now and it is as solid as when I first put it on. Keep up the great videos and hopefully the RUclips platform will continue to allow you to do what you are so good at doing; producing solid, informative and well thought out videos.
I have a 2012 Pathfinder. I needed the low range gearing to make it up hills with off camber situations and not worry about the transmission heating up. I enjoyed your video quite a bit! Looking forward to updates.
One of the things that impacted my decision to buy a 2012 Outback limited 2.5i is that the car is unusually comfortable but utilitarian. The suspension doesn't beat you up like many offroading specific cars. Jeeps are known to be uncomfortable and loud on the highway, which sucks because you only really use the offroad aspect of the car like 10 percent of the time. The Subaru can be good at offroading, while still being comfortable on the highway. I also live in the northeast where we have blizzards and ferocious summer thunderstorms. None of the weather caused me to slide or get stuck or feel nervous while driving. It's been very reliable too. I put 105,579 miles on it from 87,000 miles and it's been great! Just oil changes. They are uber-popular in the northeast and I'm glad I bought a safe, reliable, and practical wagon
@@Scott079 notorious huh? Where exactly to you see all this notoriety? And while true that taller COG vehicles are easier to tip over, 4Runners are no more likely than any other brand of suv.

Looking into getting a 2014 Subaru Outback and these are the only upgrades I would get too. One of the best SO videos out there about simple upgrades. Thanks!
I had a Subaru Outback a few years back and we had a snow storm that dropped 27 inches. A friend of mine was having trouble with his heating system and asked me if I could come over and help him . Well I tried and I didn't have much trouble until I hit a large area that was drifted. The front of a Subaru only plows snow for a little ways. Had to turn around a go back home. They are tough vehicles.
nando1026 Oh man that sucks I’m sorry maybe the people I know who’s had a Subaru got lucky or something. I personally never owned one but I sold cars for a few years and everyone I spoke to about them always had great things to say about the dependability and toughness of them? Hope everything works out good luck.
I feel like in a lot of areas it's a good grey man / sleeper vehicle. There's like a bajillion Outbacks in upstate NY, and they all look mostly the same. But you can easily "hide" skidplates, rock crawlers, a hitch, and throw a winch and battery in the back, or get a winch built into the front bumper, and get AT tires. Unless you know what you're looking for, it'll look like all the other Outbacks, but probably go more places safer. You can also get a cheapish auto locker for the rear now that would be invisible, but greatly increase capability. The lift is the thing that is going to be the most noticeable to me... Not sure how noticeable it is just walking by (if you're not looking for it).
Great video and thank you for the insight. I just bought a 2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited as a daily commuter after moving to Colorado from Florida and my 2005 Jeep Wrangler popped a head gasket. My wife drives our 2021 Toyota 4runner Venture Edition and we live in the mountains and commute to Denver for work. SH he will be fine through the winter after we get her some snow tires or all terrains. I am thinking of going with the same setup for suspension as you did only going with Falken Wildpeaks as the only difference. Your insights will keep me going through the winter until I can really get to working on all three of my vehicles offroading and suspension/tire upgrades. Thanks again!
My adventure vehicle is a 2011 F250 crew cab 4x4 turbo diesel truck with a 6.5 foot bed. It is long. I run BF Goodrich All Terrain TA/KO 2 tires, a roll up tonneau cover, and weatherguard window shades. I love it. Unloaded I get 20 mpg on the highway. When towing my 32 foot travel trailer I get 14. With 400 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque I never want for power. The console, rear underseat storage, and behind rear seat storage provide plenty of room for essentials like a full tool set, axe, machete, first aid kit, rope, tarps, blankets, etc. The only complaint is it is long with a horrible turning radius. My oldest son drives a 2007 Forester, lowered not lifted, and my wife has a 2019 Subaru Ascent. We like subies.
Great choice of car; I have exclusively owned Subarus for the last 25 years, starting with the Leone moving on to multiple Legacy's and a Forester, they suit our NZ roads that can often be very wet and winding. I've taken them off road often on the beach and on gravel surfaces; never had a problem, I've even towed out a Land Rover that was stuck in soft sand. There was a famous Kiwi Champion Subaru Rally Driver "Possum Bourne" sadly he was lost doing what he loved best, but his Subaru Tuning Shop is his legacy (pun intended) I really like the 2500 non turbo motor and the 4 wheel drive system is one of the best. I currently drive a late model Mitsi Outlander; not by choice but because it provided by my company. Every time I get to drive my wifes ten year old Legacy wagon I'm reminded how much more refined even the older Subs are compared to more modern Mitsisubishitis. Great video! After owning a 4wd F150, Rubicon and Sport Jeep Wranglers, I’ve been very happy with my 2015 Subaru Forester. It does all I need it to and is much more comfortable to drive and gets great gas mileage. It’s a waste of money buying a daily driver thats really suited more for serious off road work. Besides, how hardcore are you gonna get with your $45k Rubicon?
Most Subaru owners can't help but be Subaru marketers. They're a perfect niche fit, when you want a car 80% of the time and a deep snow / reasonably capable off-road vehicle 20% of the time. A very common need in the Mountain Time Zone and you'll find Subarus everywhere with owners talking just like this.
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road. We're the pro auto lighting manufacturer for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
I used to knock subarus. Cause it seems like 90 percent of the cars are subarus and they usually have some Bernie sanders sticker or leftist slogan slapped on tbe back. I live in washington. But they are good awd vehicles and reliable. Dont care for the car models. People put obnoxiously loud fart cans on them
In Ohio, they think I'm crazy cause I bought a 2018 Subaru Outback Premium. Drove over to Colorado, Utah, Wyoming , and South Dakota. Subarus are everywhere. Ohio is polluted by Honda
You mentioned it but watching you Go over some of those rocks made me cringe.... you might look for a metal skid plate! The boxer engine sits pretty low in the engine bay, I’d be afraid to smoke your oil pan or a diff on one of those rocks out in the middle of nowhere
This was great, thanks! I have a '14 that I'm looking to make the exact same upgrades. Also, I'd recommend looking into the upgraded Yakima cross bars, towers, and landing pads....enough increased capacity to use my roof top tent.

Why is the man kneeling in the picture promoted at the beginning of the video have a hooded Klansman next to a person wearing Blackface on his poster? Would love to learn the context here.
That was a picture of former Governor Ralph Northam, of Virginia, taken from his 1981 medical school yearbook. He was either the klansman, or the one in blackface (not sure which), and he confirmed it in his apology: www.cnn.com/2019/02/01/politics/northam-blackface-photo/index.html A the time I posted this, the VCDL was rallying against unconstitutional gun laws being pushed by Gov Northam: www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/editorials/ralph-northam-is-demonizing-gun-owners-to-distract-from-his-racist-past

What kind of trunk canopy is that?

Great vlog thanks for sharing
Great video - Thanks!!
I’m on my second cross trek, first one was a manual transmission and I hated it because the manual transmission, second one I got is the CVT and it’s great, and living up in New England I need something that is good in the snow
Any cvt issues?
Never. It's been very reliable.
@@TheLateBoyScout great to hear that
Always wanted a Subaru Forester or Outback. Unfortunately our dealership over here sucks and I refuse to buy from them. But I do have an SUV and would only have an SUV, Crossover, or a truck.
Man this sounds like a marketing piece from subaru...
Liked for VCDL support even though I'm in the Southwest now.
We love our outback it is more capable than most give it credit for
Dude I wish I spoke as well as you do! 👍
People put obnoxiously loud fart cans on them
Cool license plate.
😁
In Ohio, they think I'm crazy cause I bought a 2018 Subaru Outback Premium. Drove over to Colorado, Utah, Wyoming , and South Dakota. Subarus are everywhere. Ohio is polluted by Honda
Great video 👌
You mentioned it but watching you Go over some of those rocks made me cringe.... you might look for a metal skid plate! The boxer engine sits pretty low in the engine bay, I’d be afraid to smoke your oil pan or a diff on one of those rocks out in the middle of nowhere
I’ve considered it. There’s a plastic one under there, but a tough metal one would be better.
This was great, thanks! I have a '14 that I'm looking to make the exact same upgrades. Also, I'd recommend looking into the upgraded Yakima cross bars, towers, and landing pads....enough increased capacity to use my roof top tent.
I loved my Subie... until it blew up. Ill give it a few years and re-evaluate them... seems they're having trouble figuring out how not to screw their customers.
I cant lie Scout....I have zero interest in the topic of this video....HOWEVER, as always you did an AMAZING job on this content, and I watched every single minute...with interest lol!
Stupid comment
@@usernameisusername I'm glad you think so buddy. Unfortunately...I didn't leave the comment for you. I hope you have a wonderful day 😀

He was either the klansman, or the one in blackface (not sure which), and he confirmed it in his apology: www.cnn.com/2019/02/01/politics/northam-blackface-photo/index.html
A the time I posted this, the VCDL was rallying against unconstitutional gun laws being pushed by Gov Northam: www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/editorials/ralph-northam-is-demonizing-gun-owners-to-distract-from-his-racist-past
Gun guys should do more car reviews.
Nice car.
I thought only the LGBT drove those? Jk they are great for off road!
He is wearing a lot of plaid, so I know I wont be judging..... /s

I was going to say the same thing, but I didn't think anyone else ever noticed that, so I didn't. Lol

No one wants to see your license plate lol..that was unnecessary..js..I love my outback..I have ko2s on mine...mmmm love it!!
Exactly. Why do people block or blur the license plate? You can see thousands of license plates just going about your day.
Chad B I mean, if they were famous or something I would get it...no one wants this guys identity lol and we couldn’t get it with his license plate..haha, oh well I guess you can never be too safe..people will try anything is this day and age
Ohio is polluted with Honda, Lexus and Toyota. I drove my 2018 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5 to the Grand Tetons , Subaru everywhere
