Immigrants Held in Private Northwest Detention Center Report Death, Suicide Attempts Amid Crackdown

At one of the largest for-profit immigrant detention centers in the country, human rights advocates report, there were two suicide attempts Monday, just hours apart. The privately run Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, the site of multiple hunger strikes to protest inhumane conditions over the years, also reported 61-year-old Charles Leo Daniel from Trinidad and Tobago died at the facility last week. He had been detained for about four years and was in solitary confinement at NWDC when he was found unresponsive Thursday in what is suspected to be another suicide. This all comes as a federal judge blocked Washington state from fully enforcing a law intended to increase oversight at the for-profit immigrant jail, run by GEO Group. This recent string of events reveals "the importance and the urgency to shut down the detention center now," says La Resistencia's Maru Mora Villalpando, who explains why immigrants are vulnerable and used for votes, for political gain and as scapegoats. "We are in this midst of horrible, horrible situations in detention centers, at the border, in the countries where people need to flee, because it's working for corporations and for governments. … That's why we're not waiting for the government to solve this. We have to save ourselves."

The treatment of detainees at NWDC sounds atrocious, but the blocking of state law enforcement over a private for-profit prison should be internationally scandalous.
Privatisation of prisons is destroying the system in the UK too. So many people continue to kill themselves and NOTHING IS done. Apparently they are infested by rats and have food shortages, not to mention under staffing and abuse. I wouldn't have known if I didn't document myself because needless to say the mainstream media doesn't even remotely talk about this.
Yeah its ridiculous that a federal judge can veto our states government from having oversight over these facilities.

Solitary confinement should be illegal period. Especially for people whose only crime is trying to leave a country because the US destroyed it.

This is what I would like the government to do: increase funding to open capacity at ports of entry and funding to vet asylum seekers, stop the sanctions on the people of Venezuela and Cuba, let the people of Haiti form their own government and quit supporting the elite ruling classes in Central America.
That will not work simply because it doesn’t hurt the lawmakers and it causes mess only among the poorest people.

They tried to win the visa lottery but the legal process is very arduous, because Americans don't like filthy illegals soiling the purity of the nation. Until those fleeing people make it legally, they will die, be killed or harmed in another fashion. That's why they have to flee to protect their lives. The US should make it easier for people to come here legally then there will be fewer undocumented immigrants.

The solution is so simple: just don't come illegally.
The solution is more simple than that...don't detain, give them a court date, an ITIN, and a temporary work visa, so they can work legally and pay into our tax system (that they can't collect back out of) until such a time as they can then go to court and have their case heard since the courts are so backed up. This would allow for the governments to use that money to fund immigration rather than taking it from you and I. This gives migrants regardless of circumstance access to money for a lawyer, access to places to stay, and also allows for the administrative detention loving administrative court which has no legal authority to charge criminally anyway because they were detained and never actually charged with a crime in the first place or they would have been arraigned and be entitled to a lawyer from the start to have the ability to fine them for crossing the border illegally and dock said pay to help pay for their deportation...All of which puts money back into our tax paying system, stops the abuses of illegals being detained in private for profit facilities that also receive state and federal funding for operations from our tax dollars, while holding people indefinitely for something that is a civil/administrative matter not actually a criminal one. First understand that immigration court is not actually a criminal court at all. Second understand that its judges aren't really judges with any power beyond administrative duties, who are under the jurisdiction of ICE rule and not actually the American justice/criminal law system and only criminal courts can charge and convict you of the actual crime of criminal trespass. How much money in fines do you ever hear of coming out of detention centers? How many deportees ever pay a fine or ever actually pay for their own deportation?..why do you think detainees aren't automatically given lawyers when charged with a crime in the first place? Because they actually aren't criminals they are the subclass of civil detainees you know kind of like GITMO detainees that don't have anything close to rights under our constitution...They just have subpar protections that really aren't protections at all.
