    That sound is gold. Not to mention the reverb (makes me think I'd love to try a Catalinbread Topanga, they seem great). I've owned two 5 watts tube amps but obviously nothing compared to that 57 Champ and didn't love these much back then. But I like the voicing little amps have, the way they work and "focus". I absolutely love how you managed to pick the sound of it here, it feels "true" and natural, well done !! Not to mention your playing is mesmerizing. Doc playing a Strat' or the PRS through a nice Champ and an incredible spring reverb like the 63 here : sounds heaven to me ahaha

      I can't imagine gigging one as I like my clean tones to be clean if that makes sense. For the Champ to be clean it's really not very loud...I guess if you were using in ears and such maybe it would work but yeh for us normal people doing gigs in the thirsty duck with a deaf drummer, I don't think the champ would necessarily be the best option?

I will just be playing at home and do not need to replicate the original surf sound, but need something clean and small. Also I was thinking of the Fender '57 Custom Champ 1x8" 5-watt Tube Combo Amp plus I was going to get the Fender 63’ Reissue Reverb Unit Brown Tolex to go with it. It's a good question, here I'm using a condenser mic which is relatively flat response compared to something like an sm57.

    Beautiful playing John! If you had to choose between a new 2021 '68 Custom VibroChamp (Mex) OR this 57 Custom Champ (US) which would you go for, if money was not a deciding factor? Both being 5watts: For recording, practice, small gigs, ease of future repair, and pure tone. Thank you!

    • @johnnathancordy
      @johnnathancordy  3 года назад +1

      Hey Jonnie! One thing that I thought was sort of odd about the VibroChamp was that it features a digital reverb, which to me seems slightly at odds with the idea of reissuing a 1968 5 watt tube amp?

    • @forestsoundsguitars
      @forestsoundsguitars 3 года назад +1

      @@johnnathancordy Thanks for answering John. Yes, it seems the idea here is that by adding a digital reverb they think they reach a wider customer need. It's all about the $. Like the Princeton 65 Reissue and 68 Princeton Custom, one is a 'reissue' and the other is a custom 'modified' reissue. It's the same here. I wouldn't be surprised if the new VC sells well, they add a 65 VC reissue (blackface) that's more aligned to the original specs. I just wondered what your thoughts were if you had to choose between the US made 57 Custom Champ and the new VC (mex) in a 5 watt world :)

      @johnnathancordy  3 года назад +1

      Hey Chris, well...I think much more experienced people than me say that they can gig with a Champ if there is no drummer? Others like Julian Lage seem to do fine with a drummer, but in the jazz world I'm gonna guess those aren't massively loud gigs? If you want clean tone then I wouldn't say the Champ is necessarily a great candidate unless you have pretty low stage volume?
      Could be wrong and I'm sure there are people using one live but I'm guessing they're looking for more driven tones maybe?

      There's a company called Juketone maybe you could see if they'd let you try one? That's the first one that looked descent to me. I have no idea if they are any good or know anything about them.

      ruclips.net/video/EmcVs_32NK0/видео.html - funny you mention that actually ha - I decided to crank the master on the Cali Tweed in 2 watt mode and basically use the Gain as the volume, and you're right! Because of the cabinet size and speaker it kind of holds it together better and takes pedals better!

    Sounds amazing. Although it's clear some players' definition of (and budget for) a "practice amp" is very, very different than mine. :) $1,000 USD for a reissue Champ? Yikes.

      I agree, 1000 is a lot of money. However, you can build these yourself for a lot less, or buy a clone for a lot less. Pretty easy to build and mod as well.

      I don't mean practice amp as cheap - it's just that is the designation that Fender gave decades ago.
      I think it has to be one of the more expensive amps, component for component?

    • @jnh73
      @jnh73 3 года назад +1

      @@johnnathancordy That is absolutely correct (Fender selling it as a practice amp), and it's amazing how much its price has ballooned over the years.
      I think as soon as it became known it was the main amp for anything some dude named Clapton did with Derek and the Dominos that it became, as you point out, one of the more expensive amps, part for part and watt for watt. If not THE most expensive using that math.
      For what it's worth, the Fender Champion 600 is a great little amp too. Usually less than $300 USD and sorta-kinda the same vibe.

    What's the purpose of two inputs into a single channel amp with a singe volume control and nothing else? I don't get it. You wouldn't put two instruments through it simultaneously. Or would you?

    • @johnnathancordy
      @johnnathancordy  3 года назад +2

      Hey Joe! I think one input is quieter than the other - think like one for humbuckers, one for single coils - that type of thing? (Could be wrong but that's similar to what Fender do on other designs?)
