The Green Bay Packers are naming Ed Policy, the successor to Mark Murphy as team president and CEO, according to 2 sources with knowledge of decision. The announcement of ED Policy, who will be the 11th president in Green Bay Packers history, has been with the Green Bay Packers since 2012, 1st as the vice president and General Counsel since 2018. Mark Murphy has 1 year remaining as president and CEO before he reaches the mandatory retirement of age 70. He has been in that role since 2007. Ed Policy will work alongside Mark Murphy until the latter retires in July 2025. Go Pack Go 💚💚💛💛

There is more to this story. Back in 2018, Russ Ball was one of the main candidates to be Packers GM. Gutekunst won the job. Mark Murphy changed the Packers structure, so that Gutekunkst (GM), Russ Ball (Salary Cap and chief contract negotiator), and Head Coach would report directly to the CEO (Mark Murphy) . . . In my opinion, Mark Murphy did this to appease Russ Ball (who agreed to stay, if he didn't have to report directly to GM Brian Gutekunst) . . . In other words, Ed Policy, as new CEO, will have to balance that power structure between Russ Ball and Brian Gutekunst . . . I think Ball and Gutekunst have had 6 years to work out the kinks, and Ed Policy has been Chief Operating Officer, and they all know each other, so it will be a smooth transition.

Russ Ball was never a serious candidate to replace Ted as GM. He has virtually no experience in personnel. It’s all on the finance side of things. He wanted the job and was granted an interview. But Ted’s replacement was always going to be either Brian Gutekunst or Eliot Wolf. As for the power structure overhaul, that was a direct result of Ted’s declining health the last few years. Mark Murphy was out of the loop while the organization covered for Ted’s health issues. It had nothing to do with Russ Ball. Murphy made the right call naming Gutekunst GM. While Wolf remains acting GM in New England. Russ Ball hasn’t sniffed a GM interview anywhere else.

Always liked Andrew Brandt. Smart and articulate. Not sure why it didn’t work out for him long term with the Packers. Perhaps he expected to go on to bigger and better things. The way the Packers are structured isn’t for everyone
