First, GM decided to get rid of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, now they decided to cancel Malibu which sells for over 6 figures. GM really likes to make questionable decisions.
same with Ford canceling the Edge
The Malibu name will be back as it becomes electric.
It may sell over 100,000 per year, but guarantee most of that is fleet sales which means low margin. They probably prefer to free up the manufacturing capacity for models with higher margins. Same reason Ford canceled Fusion.
Malibu is the Fleet Sale queen. GM doesnt need to update it substantially to keep generating money from tooling and R&D that has already been paid for. Rental car companies need cheap full size gas autos.
@@briangasser973 I can only imagine that fleet sale isn’t as profitable as people think, so instead of keep making these malibus, they decided to just cancel it.
US not getting the WRX wagon is such a kick in the teeth.
Confirms to me that the company has literally ZERO clue what their customers wants.
I'd take it over the wrx we have now. The one we have is uglier than ground beer
Aren’t there fewer emissions restrictions?
@@elborro444 correct, Emissions aren’t that strict in Mexico.
Subaru is being stupid
We love you buddy. Thank you for your dedication and upkeep of your channel too. Love the weekly news and always looking forward to them.
Cheers and great weekend!
M
Read the headline and immediatley shouted "ARE YOU SERIOUS?" lol, I wish Subaru attempted to read the room at least a little bit.
Also can we stop with the "sport" grilles down the road and just black it out from the jump on a sports wagon?
No one wants that ugly car here
@@19hundoc47 I do, so that’s one they can import.
Stay strong Matt we support you
I hope the CLE gets the v8, that 4 cylinder C63 seems absolutely miserable.
Give us that beautiful little Daihatsu.
Be still my heart! Don't hold your breath.
Not if it looks that ugly, though. The Daihatsu version actually is marginally better-looking than the green Toyota proto.
The most detailed car news there is on RUclips.
I appreciate the news recap videos and look forward to these on Fridays now!
Happy you’re getting some support, you deserve it
Another great weekly update! That subaru news is almost like theyre just trolling the US at this point lol
Pretty much!
Thanks for another Weekly Update!!
Appreciate the update 🎉
Y'all need to show support if you want to help Matt keep the weekly update going
Thank you so much for the super thanks, I really appreciate it Jeremy! 🙏
Or he could go back to the content that made him famous. Matt I’m not trying to be rude but you should make a second channel building an old wrx or legacy gt. Trust me the audience would watch
I have a low paying job so I can't, but if I was rich I would! 😊
I looooooove the weekly updates!!!!!
Thanks for the update, Matt!
Forgive me for saying this but there seems to be a palpable void in your character, Matt.
It comes as no surprise given the recent event. Took me several years to get over the relinquishment of my pride and joy.
Nevertheless, we are here for you brother. As someone who has gone through the _exact_ same thing; I can honestly say - I feel your pain.
Just remember this quote from the legend himself:
_"I've always been asked, 'What is my favorite car?' and I've always said 'The next one.'"_ *~Carroll Shelby*
Stay classy my friend.
I’m all for small sporty 3 cylinder turbo cars and the S-FR looks like it would be fun to drive, but my God why did they make it look so dorky? 🤓
Church. If this is what it will look, count me out.
It isn't going to look like that. The grill has been slimmed. There will also be three versions, a Daihatsu and Suzuki version....but those definitely won't come to the U.S.
Great update.
Another great video Matt. Always looking forward to watch your weekly videos. Much love and support Matt.
Thanks!
Finally crossed 448k!!
Yep, all thanks to the huge amount of support this past week!
favorite time of the week!
Thanks you for all the work you put into these. Been watching since you goy the BRZ. Keep you the great work.
Do you think they’ll most likely redesign the Malibu, but only for Korean and Chinese markets?
An EV sedan could replace it
Thanks Matt!
Wunderbar! Another Episode of the Matt Maran Friday Night Car News Show - with almost 30 Minutes of updates again. Wishing every Viewer here a great day and a fantastic weekend ahead. Enjoy the News and your free time!
As much as I like the idea of a WRX wagon, having watched Mighty Car Mods turn their WRX wagon (called a Levorg in Australia), into a beast with a full STI swap...I think the base version is actually a little underwhelming on multiple fronts.
The M4 with that big grill everyone hated when it came out, looks pretty frickin badass to me these days. Love it. Very mean
Me too. I hated it at first. I still hate the honeycomb grill on the non-M 4, though.
Malibu i drove two years ago was the 2.0T one. It was really luxurious and easily took the place of a C class Benz in my mind. With dealer discounts and etc, they really are a good purchase. I don’t understand that idiocy.
I would love to be a fly on the wall in the auto company meetings making these bizarre decisions
We love you Matt!
Great video as alwa
12:42 love the green body color & yellow daytime running lights combo of the bmw
Most of these GM decisions are due to limited production availability. They can't build more factories in the US because UAW labor is so expensive, but at the same time if it is an EV is has to be built here because of incentives. So they have limited resources in terms of factories to use. And building more factories in the US is mostly a non-starter because they don't want to be left with a not fully utilized factory in X years if demand weakens. They've said a few years back that they aren't chasing volume anymore - maintaining their margins is more important than selling higher volume cars at lower profits. I can't really disagree with that mentality even if it seems counterproductive.
Thought the Malibu was out of production for a few years now … at least in Canada it has been
Even I, the US citizen, thought it’s long gone in the first place until I read the news about the discontinuation. I’m actually surprised by the sales number in 2023, 130,000 is definitely pretty good, way better than Subaru Legacy which is also discontinued.
@@blackwhirlwind1245 ya just read up on it and they still sell it in Canada and it said in any given month 50 percent of sales is to fleet rental companies and some months can be up to 75 percent
@@josephscaringi6442 yeah, I do think majority of Malibu are probably going to the fleet sale, and that’s why the profit margin isn’t high.
The GR86 with the G16E-GTS engine does have some ground though because Toyota themselves is currently running a GR86 with that engine for Super Taikyu.
Toyota has been using Super Taikyu as a place to experiment new stuff for a few years now.
The Hydrogen ICE powerplant, the new 8-speed Auto, a de-stroked version of the G16E-GTS (1.4L vs 1.6L), and the G16E powered GR86.
The one car ive seen near the mexican border that makes me jealous every time i see it is the suzuki jimny!!
Why? Why would you get a $120K M4? What did I miss?
Matt throwing best car mag under the bus bc he can’t really say what is really going on… classic GR shell tactics lol
😂😂
I'd pre-order a WRX Wagon day one. It looks so clean after looking at the Outbacks with their over the top plastic cladding. Perhaps with the Legacy departure Subaru will find room for it in the US lineup.
Hate the outside of the Cullinan but the inside is incredible
On the WRX wagon not coming to the US, simply put , we don't buy them. Most car enthusiasts bemoan manufacturers not bringing or building enthusiasts cars but when it's all said and done, we don't buy them! Look at the state of the manual transmission. I commute 2 hours daily in Austin Tx traffic in a 6sp mustang and yeah it sucks , but i value driving engagement above all else and as long as i physically can, i will commit, yeah!, commit to driving a stick . Oh and my "family " car is a 2016 Mazda 3 hatch 6sp.
But does it actually require much certification to bring a wagon variant of an already certified sedan? A wagon is pretty much a sedan with a slightly different back. Don't bring 100,000 to dealer lots - make them available to order.
@@andycalifornia426 There's still a cost associated with offering more models. The cost of supporting all the spare parts, plus the cannibalization of the sedan sales means that you lose economies of scales there, causing both models to be more expensive. The price of the WRX on the upper end trims already has people wondering why they should buy it over the GR Corolla (from the reviews I watched, the answer sounds like daily drivability). The end result is a loss of sales that's more than just the sedan sales converted to wagon sales.
Plus, I think Subaru is trying to be ahead of the curve in terms of love for sedans. With general population going towards crossovers, Subaru killing the Legacy, Ford and Chevy killing all sedans, I think they're projecting that enthusiasts will want a sedan in a future since "no one makes a sedan anymore."
We do need smaller cars. I hate big suvs every to the point where it's not safe.
I’m glad the third of the c class coupe models Mercedes is doing this year has a v8 cause I forgot how weak the m4 is
Here's hoping the EV3 turns out to be a right-sized, right-priced winner. Good, next-gen products on latest battery tech coming in at or under $35k are what's needed, and more in the way of less-large EVs as well.
3:22 angry pikachu!
How hard is it to import from Mexico?
Gone miss the Malibu with out the Cvt
I dig that WRX wagon. I’d definitely trade in my crossover for that since there would be no compromise in space!
Makes sense for BMW to drop the i at the end of names. Never confused me either, but I can definitely see how many in the general public would be confused.
I'd like to see you do a video on the newer Z4 with the Handshalter package. It can be had with a beautiful dark green matte paint and....a MANUAL!
Do you also have nice contacts at your Genesis dealership? I'd like to know when the GV80 coupe will arrive. I keep getting ballpark ranges like summer or fall which doesn't help.
I’d love to review the Z4 if I can get my hands on one. I don’t have any timeline for GV80 Coupe, but I’ll be spending a week with the 2025 GV80 this summer.
Honestly, I thought the Malibu was discontinued a few years ago. PHEVs may sound great, but at what cost for the manufacturer. Toyota is having a hard time ramping up Prime models, and I'd bet the Prius Prime takes a loss while the base hybrids bring in the cash.
Looks like I’m taking a trip south of the border
at 10:26 you said doodoo! :)
Would love to get a wrx wagon instead of my Impreza sport wagon
BMW finally quits putting "i" on the back of cars...over four decades after they quit putting carburetors on engines...
they fear they will cannibalize outback sales
The S-FR is never coming here. North America is suburbanized to hell with ultra wide lanes everywhere you go and American preferences are school bus sized vehicles
1:25 Viva México para Subaru but it’s weird that we aren’t getting it that’s dumb
All they need to do is make the gr86 into convertible with a soft top or hardtop option
8:12 so the problem I have with the GLC and the C-Class is when it’s idling the 2.0L Turbo 4 cylinder and mild hybrid assist it’s sounds really really clanky like a diesel and it’s not a diesel so I hope MB makes improvements to the engine cuz the current one sounds like garbage
I wish the S-FR made it to the US. Im tired of seeing these newer cars getting bigger and heavier, and the manufacturer's answer to that is just to add more power, keep milking 400hp out of a turbo 3 cylinder in a full-size SUV, slap in a hybrid system, and call it a day. Cars today lack the character they had years ago.
Mercedes lack of EV sales and less interest in the new c63 4cyl hybrid. Mercedes back up plan was to go back to V8's and it's already in motion.
America has the most expensive process for crash test saftey...and a car can be only slightly different and still need to be re tested and a lot of money put into it.
I guess we just have to imported then. I’m in Canada so I know it sucks 😢😢😢
Could the decision to kill Malibu for bolt also be a CAFE thing? And they’re truly trying to beat Tesla to the punch of the adorable EV, assuming it’ll be cheap enough
Have you ever considered daily vlogging not trying to sound weird but I’d watch🤔😎
Forget motor and output. All I want from the next Huracan is no more artificial overrun pops.
Canada would migrate to 150hp, especially if the lower hp means class leading consumption.
I Mexican’t with Subaru
We are Mexicans not Mezicants 🤣🤣 .
Another amazing Friday news. Would be a lot more fun to listen to if i wasn’t dead broke, but you’re always enjoyable to listen to anyways.
I know you’ve been upset with your numbers going down. I don’t know how your peers are performing on RUclips, but I’d think listening to new car news is probably correlated with the economy. When I’m dead broke and the job market blows I’m less eager to hear about all the amazing cars I want.
Maybe you should do an Economy special. A special driven by the shit economy, on economy cars. Fun video about having auto fun without much cash. Go bang around in an old manual Fit or something.
As an owner of a GM EV, I’m disappointed on how dumb they are.
Being a GM fan is like being a Jets fan.
On BMW dropping "i" from the name: long overdue. They've all been injection-only for decades now, so the "i" has been redundant for a veeery long time.
Ford did the same thing with Fusion that GM is doing with Malibu. Fusion was doing over 100k sales and they killed it anyway.
2015 fusion owners and still love it
Fuck yeah
The current WRX is great. I dont listen to all the seething hate…..i love mine. If i wanted a wagon, I’d get a Crosstrek or an Audi. When the forecaster offered the XT, only 15 percent of all forecasters sold were the XT version. You all may not like it, or choose to ignore this reality - there is a very limited market in the US for high-performance wagons. Subaru may migrate the Levorg to the US, but it is only made with the CVT - so, no thanks to a wagon and anything with a CVT. Suggest we stop being hateful and/or stop whining.
i feel like we are in the golden age of ice, all the ev and emission laws pretty much get rid of all the npc engine and all the engines that are left or coming out are some the most exciting engines ever.
Remember those Lease’s are for the absolute base model’s of these EV’s. I work at Hyundai and we literally have no inventory for those lease specials.
have a great weekend as always Matt btw are you planning on doing anything fun this weekend? also btw are you selling/trading in your Mustang Bullitt and are you going to find/buying a new car as a replacement for it
Hi Logan, I posted a video last week announcing that it’s been sold and that I don’t have anything coming to replace it. I hope you have a great weekend too.
What lunatic is confused by “ i” in BMW vehicles?!
lets all support SubaruWRXfan and get this man an EJ Sti again. he needs ( not wants ) another Subie, and we need to give it to him, force it down his throat if we have to 😈
jk we dont foce it, but lets get this man back on a subie
Americans hate wagons, the only vehicles with a hatch they are interested in are SUVs and the vehicle manufacturers know this. That's why the Subaru Levorg will never be sold in America.
Smh wow Mexico get a wagon but we dont..it will sell!!
Comment boost 😊
The SFR makes no sense at all unless it’s a convertible. It would likely cut into GR86 sales.
I thought they were working on a new MR-2.
Also why does Subaru hate us?
I’ve always liked GM the most as far as domestic companies but what’s going on there? Killing a car that sells that much or giving up on models too soon. I think what killed the Camaro was the styling. They got a whole new platform and went …
Hey what should we make this gen. Look like?
How about almost exactly the same as the last.
Great Idea let’s go with that!
Should we address the terrible outward visibility everyone complains about?
Nah F-em!
A modern version of the second and great selling generation would have been more interesting.
Mexico gets the WRX wagon damn damn damn
For real wtf!
With manual too.. I wasnt so jealous of Aussies getting CVT wagon but with manual….
It’s sad the WRX wagon isn’t coming here. It honestly has boggled my mind for a while now why wagons as a whole haven’t made a comeback. With so many people favoring SUVs for added cargo space and such, a wagon would be a perfect secondary option with the added cargo space they usually have available and you get a better handling vehicle since they sit with a lower center of gravity like a car. I think they’d sell well.
Church. I wonder whether bringing a wagon version of an already certified-for-sale sedan needs any extra certification. If it does, ok. If it doesn't (which I would think), then it's criminal not to offer it at least for order.
Why would you think a WRX wagon would sell in America? The U.S. hates wagons and hatchbacks.
Yeah, I'd buy a Legacy wagon, if such a thing existed, but I compromised and got an Outback, which is way more SUV than wagon, but it's the closest I can afford to an actual station wagon. I think those of us in the comment sections of these CarTubers love us some wagons, but we are a very small minority of the car buying public. The thing about the WRX Wagon (or Levorg in other parts of the world) is that at least according to the guys at Might Car Mods, the vehicle is pretty underwhelming to drive/live with. Until they did a full "STI" drivetrain swap.
Kia made everyone happy by bringing the K4 hatchback over
Toyota need to refresh the Supra and stop making all these new cars 🚗. I want a new updated Supra please 🙏
If AMG doesn’t put a V8 in the CLE they are almost as moronic as Fisker
I wouldn't put it past them. They've been making idiotic decisions for years now.
Subaru is becoming the next Nissan. I'm definitely buying a different make next time.
Matt, as a VB WRX I must say this. BRING THE FUCKIN WAGON TO THE USA SUBARU GODDAMN
GM hates making money. Thats why the Malibu is going away.
🔥🔥🔥
They really gonna drop a WRX wagon in the neighbor's driveway and make us stare at it? Subarude.
🙂👍
Dad's had the WRX wagon here in Australia for 2 years 😋
my guess is subaru is afraid a wrx wagon in the states would pull sales from the outback and crosstreck. If they brought one here I'd be one of the first in line to get one. Imagine a STI wagon 🥵🔥. Let me get that asap!
Subaru is lost.
