  • My hands-on review on the TM-V71a and a little walkthrough. I didn't get a chance to discuss all the features this radio is packed with but I kept it basic. While shopping for a radio recently I had to make a decision between this radio and the FT-8800. I go over some of the positives this radio has over the 8800. Any questions please ask.

First, I want to say thanks to you for your cultural enrichment on the Kenwood radio. It was going to be an ICOM 8800H but then I was shown the light (by your great info and comments, I appreciate it greatly) and bought the radio yesterday at HRO and can't wait to get started. Thank-you, Jim KB1QIF 73

I just picked up a new TM-V71A yesterday, and I can't wait to get a power supply so I can start using it! Thanks for this video.

Mike Austin Get a cheap PC power supply. They all have a +12V rail, and plentyyyyyyyy of current capacity on that rail. Use ground and that +12V rail(s) to power that radio very easily

      Joe Biliello The
recommended current capacity of the power supply is 12 A.
EDIT: So yes, a 20A supply
      would be overkill

Thanks for the review of the radio and the KB9VBR J-Pole antenna. Our ARES/RACES group has the TM-V71A installed the hamshacks for our area hospitals. It's a great rig.

My wife and I just purchased a pair for our cars. We've newly minted Techs, so we consulted our "Elmer" who recommended this for ease of programming and functionality. We really like the weather alert feature and backlit display/keys on the mic. 73 K3IVN

This will be my next rig. I have been eyeing it for a while now. I love my TM-281A but want cross band repeat capabilities. Thanks for the review.

I'm using this rig in my house with an ANLI A100 antenna in my attic. It is the best rig i've ever used. No problem hitting repeaters a good 60 miles from the house.

Thanks for the review it was very helpful. I ordered one of these Kenwoods to replace my 20 year old Icom IC 2400A which has been a great radio, but I prefer Kenwoods and have owned several. The thing that sold me on this Kenwood is it has real squelch control its not buried in a menu with a number choice from 1 to 9 for squelch levels, those are in the Chinese Mobiles. Another feature is the total remote control feature I really look forward to using that one.. Great video thanks..

You may have already figured this out, but the reason you lose Rx on the other side when you Tx is that your radio uses the same antenna for Tx and Rx. While you're transmitting, that antenna is flooded with that energy and if you were to try to receive on it, you'd only "heard" your own Tx.
Thanks for the review, BTW. I'm deciding on whether to pick one of these up right now, and it's helpful.

This is partially true. It can't receive on the same band (2m - 2m, or 70cm - 70cm) that the other side of the radio is transmitting on. If it did, it would damage the radio. It can receive simultaneously on the same band if you are just RX'ing.
This radio can, in fact, receive on one band and simultaneously re-transmit what it is receiving, on the other band (2m - 70cm, or 70cm - 2m). It's a feature called Cross Band Repeat. It lets you extend the range of hand held radios via this more powerful mobile radio.
This radio also allows you to choose whether not you can RX on the other side while you are TX'ing. In normal use, most people mute the opposite side, so as not to get confused by trying to talk and also listen to another conversation at the same time! :)
However, you could use this feature to hold a normal conversation with two of these radios. One person would TX on UHF and listen on VHF, and the other person would TX on VHF and listen on UHF, and you would then effectively have a full duplex conversation (like a telephone conversation).
It's a very useful radio. Highly recommended. The only better one, is the TM-D710. Which has _ALL_ the bells and whistles!

Thanks for the review. I'm torn between the FT-8800 and the TM-V71A, but I'm leaning more toward the Kenwood now!

Over all It is a great radio, I now have two, and got the second one, simply because I already had one. Although I was a little confused when setting the PL for the Tone.

Nice overview Thinking of this vs the Yaesu FT-8800R. A big selling point for me on the Kenwood is that it has a backlit faceplate.

The mute on un used band is a option in the menu, you can mute it or not mute it. Software is free from Kenwood buy cable from Amazon or Ebay. Also Kenwood allows encode and decode with different PL tones , Yaseu does not.

Thanks for this intro. I've been looking at the TM-D710A for years but have resigned that I'll save the $100-$200 and go with this one. I'll be able to fabricate the TNC if I decide to include the APRS in the not so distant future. I know it is hard to compare apples to apples with any manufacture as Icom and Yaesu both have great products that are similar. I do think you have affirmed my perspective of the Kenwood over Icom and Yaesu.
Others have discussed the point of muting one side while tx on the other. I'm very confused in this discussion and see no reason this would happen. Isn't this how repeaters work? This radio is advertised as being able to repeat VHF-VHF/FHV-UHF/UHF-UHF. It won't change my idea to purchase it, but I question if there is something in the programming or even a blip in the manufacturing of your particular rig that is causing this and not a radio capability situation.

I think when I tested it I had both on UHF. I was told if I was TX on VHF it should still receive on UHF at the same time and vice versa. But you can't tx and rx on the same band at the same time.

It is the fan on the radio. I have this one and the TM-D710A and both have noisy fans. However, not so noticeable when used as a mobile rig.
