    Looks MUCH better than the Sonata to my eye. I might still be tempted by an Accord or a Mazda6 over this for their looks and driving dynamics, but Kia did a great job with this. Would definitely be my pick after those two!

      I couldn't give a rats ass if the vents are functional or not. It looks good. I don't go down the road thinking about how the dam exhaust gets out as long as it does. It for design purposes. Look at the rear and imagine them gone, and solid plastic there instead. Would like bad. And fake exhaust ports have been on cars for over 60 years...

    Hey Matt is this car a fun daily? It’s in my price range and on my short list. Been looking at the k5 gt line awd, Camry se nightshade, accord sport 1.5t, Dodge Charger gt and sonata sport. I’m getting rid of a base 2020 Hyundai Veloster and I love that cars handling but need something bigger. I still want a car that’s reasonably fun but don’t have expectations that it has to be a sport sedan. Love the looks of these cars just wondering if it’s still reasonably fun to drive without being a sport sedan. I can’t stand the look of the accord or the cvt

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  4 года назад +1

      I think the Accord handles better and therefore is a little bit more fun. If you can stretch to a 2.0T Sport model you'll get the better 10 speed auto. The K5 is still a great car with a smooth ride and great interior, and it would be the runner-up midsize family sedan in my opinion. The actual K5 GT will be the more fun one.

      I don't like the looks of the Camry. This K5 gt-line is the most attractive in mid-sedan segment.

    The trim levels of the K5 in the US can be somewhat confusing, much like the trims of the recently introduced KIA Seltos. At first glance there appear to be five steps on the K5 trim level: LX, LXS, GT-Line, EX, and GT. In reality, however, there are several more more steps on the ladder.
    () LX. ($23,490 MSRP). It's relatively well equipped for a base model but it does not offer an AWD option or a variety of other optional bells and whistles. The LX is aimed at budget constrained consumers but more importantly it's the model aimed at fleets, especially rental fleets. You're not likely to see many of these sitting on dealer lots.
    () LXS ($24,495 MSRP) This is the true "base" model of the K5. At $1000 more than the LX, it offers a few more upscale interior and driver assistance features but more importantly it enables a customer to choose an AWD option that's not available in the LX model. And that is the....
    () LXS w/ AWD ($26,590 MSRP) This is in effect the base trim (LXS) with AWD.
    () GT-Line ($25,390 MSRP). This is primarily an appearance package and more upscale interior materials added to the LXS model. And like the LXS trim, it's FWD but opens the door to adding AWD and lots of other bells, whistles, and premium materials in the GT-Line w/ AWD and Premium Package. (See below)
    () EX. ($27,990 MSRP). Even more bells and whistles including a sunroof, ventilated front seats, and lots of other stuff. But no AWD and no option to add it.
    () GT-Line w/AWD and Premium Package ($29,090 MSRP) The bells and whistles of the GT-Line plus AWD and Premium Package features including a panoramic sunroof. Alternatively the premium package can be dropped and navigation added for a savings of $800 with the "Special Edition" package.
    () EX plus Premium Package. ($31,835) The top trim, fully loaded version of the K5 with the 1.6L turbo engine and FWD. Unlike the GT Line there's no option to add AWD but the Premium package adds lots of bells and whistles, premium materials, and features like navigation-based cruise control, seat memory, etc.
    () GT. ($30,935) Replaces the 1.6L turbo engine with the 2.5L turbo and the conventional AT with an 8 speed dual clutch transmission. It's comparable to the EX, FWD only, but considerably stronger performance.
    () GT plus Premium Package. ($34,935) This is comparable to the EX plus PP with nearly all of the same features minus a few (e.g. seat memory.) In effect it's a $3000 premium for engine, transmission, and suspension upgrades. Again, no option for AWD probably because of premium it would add to the price ($2100) and the low take rate expected. (Neither Toyota nor Nissan offer AWD in their performance models of the Camry or Altima for that reason.)
    All in all, KIA is offering the K5 in two guises. One is a midsize "family" sedan with a trim ladder that goes from budget to a more expensive but strong value proposition. The other is a "sporty" version that offers AWD at lower trims and a strong performing 2.5L turbo (the same engine available in the Sonata and as the base engine of the Genesis G80) version at the top end.
    There will be complaints from those who want a particular combination of features and options that cannot be configured from the K5 trims. But from a consumer point of view, KIA's approach enables them to bundle features in ways that both appeal to broader market segments and constrain the cost of producing (and selling) vehicles and meeting particular price points.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 4 года назад +5

      Not gonna happen, John. For a couple of reasons, I think. First, automakers configure their models to meet a price point in specific markets. Kia is no different in that respect and the competition in Korea and North America is very different. Most importantly, the K5 doesn't have to compete with the Camry, the Accord, or the Altima in Korea. Recent trade disputes and long standing historical animosities between the two nations mean Japanese brand sales are a tiny blip in Korea compared to North America. KIA doesn't have to worry about Korean consumers cross shopping Accords and Camrys. In North America Japanese brands are at the top of the midsize sedan market and if KIA (and Hyundai) want to compete, they have to offer a compelling case that Honda, Toyota, and Nissan do not.
      While KIA's reputation as a cheap knockoff brand is gone, they're still strongly committed to offering a strong value proposition to North American customers. Thus, a fully loaded top trim K5 GT (Not the GT-Line) with the "GT1" option package tops out at $35,455 with destination. A comparable top trim fully loaded Accord Touring model with the 2.0L turbo engine tips the scales at $41,768! Actual transaction prices often differ from MSRP, of course, but that's likely to be even greater than a $6000 MSRP advantage for the K5. In short, KIA is following exactly the same pattern as the GTI where VW offers fewer bells and whistles in the US than in Europe at a significantly lower price point as a result of the competition in North America.
      Furthermore, the K5 is an established nameplate in Korea while KIA is touting the K5 as a completely "new" model in North America. As vehicles go through annual updates, features are typically added to attract new customers. I suspect KIA believes they need to offer Korean consumers a reason to look at the latest version of the somewhat familiar K5. In North America, on the other hand, KIA may believe they should hold back some of the bells and whistles for the first model year so they'll be free to "upgrade" it with new features in the following model years.

      @@stephenhendricks103 Good insights Stephen. Very reasonable. But sometimes, Canada gets the exact same model we get. I've read that it's because Kia has far greater market penetration in Canada than the United States, so they afford to give more car. We do have Camry and Accord in Korea, but almost nobody buys them. Koreans don't like Japanese cars in general. Anyway, I've lived in Korea for so long, I take some pride in the accomplishments of Korean brands.( Even though I had nothing to do with it!) So it just makes me sad to see Kia offering what apprears to be such a low spec model of a great car when I know they have better. Cheers Stephen!

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 4 года назад +1

      @@johnholst Interesting that you'd note the difference between the US and Canada. Although most vehicles sold in the US and Canada are close to identical with minor differences stemming from regulatory issues, there are some exceptions. VW, for example, treats the US and Canada in a number of different ways including model differences and availability. I've assumed that was because someone at VW Canada has embarrassing photos of some executives at VW Germany but that's purely speculation. :)
      I'm not sure where the K5 for Canada will be built but I suspect it's being produced at the KIA factory in West Point, GA rather than in Korea, just as the Optima and Telluride have been. If so, I'd expect them to be largely identical. On the other hand I did read that the K5 GT would be available in Canada at an undefined "later date" and the K5 is not yet included in KIA's "build and price" Canadian website while it's shown on the US site and is slated for November 2020 availability.
      You may well be right about KIA's greater relative market penetration in Canada versus the US. But I think another issue may be simply the vastly different size of the two markets. Canada is by no means a small country but the population is essentially equal to California. (Slightly less than 40 million folks.) Google says KIA has 750 dealerships in the US versus 188 in Canada. With eight times as many people and four times as many dealerships the challenge of producing a vehicle and making it available nationwide is considerably more challenging in the US than in Canada. KIA might be able to set aside production facilities either in Georgia or Korea for a K5 for the Canadian market without as seriously impacting production/distribution as would be the case for the US.
      I can understand your (and others') disappointment that the US K5 doesn't offer the same features as the Korean version. But from KIA's perspective I suspect the appropriate comparison is what the US K5 offers compared to the Accord, Camry, and Altima. And on that score the US K5 looks very competitive.
