I think in Mediterranean cultures you want your mom to cook for you because it's a form of intimacy and bonding... also for some reason mom is a genius and her cooking is always better so why not. In Scandinavian or Nordic cultures parents tend to be more cold shouldered... they want their kids to be independent as quickly as possible and leave them alone, but for Mediterranean kids this would be interpreted as parental apathy or abandonment. Also don't forget that historically speaking food was a way to bring people together so it helps the cohesion of the family.
Taking care of children and then, children taking care of their old parents is a MUST that comes from Ancient Greece. In Ancient Athens, the father would give a "dowry" to his daughter before her marriage: this was NOT a "bribe" for the husband, but a "safe account" in the case she was unhappy in her marriage and wanted to...divorce her husband! Which civilisation does THAT???
southern europe vs northern europe in a nutshell i like this stereotype, and it really is the case often times. i would know, i'm greek, i've spoken to a person once! hahaha
@@mylifeinrhodes Honestly I do find it extremely weird! I have traveled in N Europe and in Finland and people act really strange (for Greeks) when you try to reach, smile and have a casual conversation ! Interesting how this video appeared in my RUclips feed. I am a 69 year American who's been anxious to leave the US for the past year. I've always been happy that my mother's father came from Lesvos to the US in 1906. Sadly, he died before I was born. Also, my mother didn't pass on to me any traditions from her father. But, I know a good deal about Greek history and culture. I've found from online sources that this Greek ancestry would help me to become a Greek citizen. I haven't visited yet, but hope to do so within a year from now. Thank you for being here and sharing your experiences living in Greece. I did subscribe.
The way to say thank you at a Greek table is to actively enjoy the food provided, to smile share a laugh and be good company. A little compliment also goes along way.

My wife and I have been many times to Greece. And to one particular shop to buy food. Over the years we decided the shop owner was not particularly friendly. And he never spoke English. One year my wife made a real effort to learn some words in Greek. She spoke to him in Greek when we bought food. His face cracked with a lovely smile. The effort was worth it to see his warm expression.
Greeks are friendly in general but temperamental at the same time, so sometimes they look like are not very friendly. They don't have a certain form or type of individual behaviour like most north european people, and this is confusing even between them, causing a lot of arguments.
@@roberteastwood6937 it's always a good idea to try to speak some Greek even if you say it wrong. Greek people really appreciate that. Thank you for sharing this story 😊

Indeed " don't thank me" is an expression Greeks often use for people they consider close, like family, for example if you are in a serious relationship or married " thank you" comes in the form of a kiss or parents and children often give a little Hug as thanks
Great honest analysis, very beautifully expressed, very kindly shared, revealing observations of two cultures far apart but close at heart. Thank you for sharing! 🇬🇷🇫🇮❤
Your videos feel very honest and "real". Very interesting and educational. Me and my fiance have visisted Rhodos twice over the last 8 years, recently last year. We both really fell in love with the island, and seing your recordings from there almost makes me feel homesick! Cheers from Denmark!
Thank you for this heart warming video. Love your humour too! We are going to live soon in a Greek mountain village in Mani. We fell in love with people there. I felt so lonely in Canada at times. Greece feels very welcoming
As a Greek who has luckily moved to a northern European country and I have never regretted for my choice! Here you find the kindness you can never find in Greece! The few times I have returned in Greece to visit my family, I met envy and toxic people around, without any smile rather more aggressive to each other!one other thing I can not stand in Greece is that members of families, friends and even strangers don't respect the personal boundaries and they call this as spontaneity!
I enjoyed your video so much. It reminded me how I grew up. You see Athens was like this in the 1950s or 1960s. Not anymore unfortunately. Same with Thessaloniki (Salonica) or Patra. In Greece, 75% of the population lives basically in these 3 big cities and lifestyle there does not differ that much from other big cities anywhere in western Europe. Thank God we still have some villages and small towns left in the country to remind us how it is to be human.
I have been living on Rhodes for 20 years. Last year I spent two weeks with my husband in hospital for serious health reasons and his room was shared with 4 other men, all from Athens. The men and their families were lovely. Warm, caring, family orientated people. They would help me, knowing I was alone and didn't know the city. We all formed a small community of mutual solidarity and support. This year my daughter moved to Athens to start university. I went 3 times to Athens to find a flat, to clean it and prepare it and then I stayed a bit with my daughter for the start. I found people in Athens just as friendly, warm and caring as people in Rhodes. Nothing like people in Germany.
Dear Lena, most if not all of your observations are accurate. Some I realized after I heard them from you. Thank you very much for choosing our country to live, thank you for your efforts to understand our people, thank you for the respect, the humility and the kindness you show. I was touched by your words, and I am wishing you the best!
Very nice and on point, except I would argue the understanding of the need for politeness varies from person to person among Greeks. For example, as a native Greek I use please and thank you often, even with family and close friends and so do they. I have also come across Greeks that are more polite than me and of course several who are less. Also, them telling you "you don't have to say thank you, you're family" is a bit of a conventional way with which Greeks respond to gratitude . Like, yes, they do mean they feel close and familiar with you, but they all took note and appreciated you more for thanking them anyway rather than they would have if you had not done it.
Congratulations for your nice view of Greek people. I could say you are in love with Greece. It is very good that you are so enthusiastic with the more beautiful country of the world, the country of the gods. Thank you.
I am a Greek American, age 70. My parents are Greek, and I have many relatives in and from Greece. You made me laugh so much. Your observations are absolutely accurate, and I dare say hilarious. I enjoyed your video! Na eise kala!

Hi Leena. I appreciate your lovely perspective of Greek culture. Our family is from Rhodos but we left when I was four. I love to cook and learned a lot from our mother and sister. The parents are gone now and I occasionally wonder how my life would have been if we had never left. Thank you for the nostalgic taste of home. It's a beautiful part of Greece. You seem quite content to be where you are.
I was skeptical before deciding to watch this video and I had my complaints ready but the more I watched of it the more I became convinced of its accuracy and sincerity. Thank you. Well done!
Thank you for sharing. As an Australian with Greek heritage, I feel you have perfectly articulated the Greek culture and the Greek "φιλότιμο". It explains why I feel so emotional and get so much pleasure every time I visit Greece.
You should have seen the greek family solidarity back in the 80s and 70s... We used to make family gatherings to dcide what to do if even a distant relative had a problem... Also people in the villages would invite any stranger passing by to offer treats and hospitality... Thes practices are long gone I'm afraid...
Λένα you are right to say "Thank you" after the meal. My youngest son had the natural impulse since he was a toddler and it is really nice. I appreciate it. We say "thank you for the lesson" and "thank you for the meal" all the time and we are 100 percent Greek.
"This is the place to be" for us is so true. I've booked a flight to Munich for a 15-day trip for Oktoberfest. Me and 2 friends. After 8 days, we couldn't take it anymore. Munich was like, half grey Germany, half little Turkey. We all felt serious homesickness, paid the fine to "break" the tickets into a shorter "aller-retour" versions. When we arrived back to our airport, watching the Greek flag, it was like we could breathe again. We were in need of resuscitation only our soil could provide. About the cleanness, sometimes my mom is acting like she's got obsessive compulsive disorder. Now, my sisters became like her. I'm the only boy in the family, but still girls get surprised by me. Especially when they don't know I grew up mostly with 4 women, my mom and 3 sisters and obviously, my father. While I'm 100% heterosexual, I'm a little feminine. However, the advice I was getting by my older sisters brought me a lot of success regarding the opposite sex. They were keeping me as they'd like their boyfriends. Spotless clean, well-groomed, well-dressed with a drop of aroma behind my ears. About my mom's food is also 100% true. Only my mom's and now my married sisters' homes. To the point, I can't eat home-made food from elsewhere. In that case, I'd prefer to order a gyro, souvlaki, pizza, crêpes or something. Generally, eat something from outside. You might find this behavior strange, but it is what it is. Unless I'm present and familiar to another house, of course. Family and wider family, siblings and friends -those I can easily trust and eat. Perhaps, in some cases this has to do with our compulsive disorder in cleanness. We don't know how clean the other house can be; thus, we don't risk eating there. Anyway, back to Germany. Language wasn't a problem. We were speaking perfect English and even a little German. In general, we liked Germany, we went in other cities, too, as daily trips in Baden Wurttemberg. Bavaria and Baden Wurttemberg at least are a little similar to Southern Europe in some respects, but still, simply wasn't for us. Admittedly, we're a little biased, too, as Greeks since they've got so many Turks there. Entire streets are like Eastern Bazaars. This, we didn't like it, we were somewhat apprehensive. Now seriously, Europe as a whole is more than enough. We've got everything within the Union. The US, we all kind of feel we've been there since most of the movies we watch are American. Obviously watching movies isn't the same, but you get the point.
As a Greek living in Norway your video brought a smile on my face. You reminded me of my childhood years back in Greece when shouting at a mother for a meal was normal and believing that everything Greek was better than anything else was also a very common thing :) A good friend and colleague of mine is also Finnish who also lived in a Greek island for many years. In Ancient Athens, the father would give a "dowry" to his daughter before her marriage: this was NOT a "bribe" for the husband, but a "safe account" in the case she was unhappy in her marriage and wanted to...divorce her husband! Which civilisation does THAT???

The effort was worth it to see his warm expression.

Greeks are friendly in general but temperamental at the same time, so sometimes they look like are not very friendly. They don't have a certain form or type of individual behaviour like most north european people, and this is confusing even between them, causing a lot of arguments.

Indeed " don't thank me" is an expression Greeks often use for people they consider close, like family, for example if you are in a serious relationship or married " thank you" comes in the form of a kiss or parents and children often give a little Hug as thanks

@@1964Byron thank you for your comment 😊 Yes, I'm from Helsinki and also in Finland people in the countryside are more considerate and old-fashioned 😊

@@yiannisparaschos8031 I don't know what to say, thank you truly 🙏
Dear Leena, really liked your video, loved the way you spoke and your honesty. Wishing you the very best!

@@Laconic-Spartan-GR thank you for your comment! It was nice to read about you and your family regarding these topics. You also gave me a good laugh 😄
