- Today I’m discovering the Onbashira Festival. Participants ride giant logs down a steep mountain in fascinating and colorful celebrations.
“Onbashira, which translates to "the honorable pillars," attracts thousands of people each year who participate in moving 16 massive fir tree trunks from the mountains to the shrines of Suwa. To reach the shrines, the trunks are pulled with ropes and ridden down steep hills, through a river, and across the streets, in the 1,200-year-old festival. Oh! Matsuri captures this exhilarating procession in which we see the trunks' trek to replace the sacred pillars at the four shrines and stand, in honor, for the following six years. “

There is another thing Japanese that you may not know of. The Kyoto Tachibana Senior High School Band. They just might be the BEST High School band in the world. In 2017 they played at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, then 2 days later played at the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA. The band members themselves choreograph all the dance steps and movements that they do. At this occasion, they brought all 196 Members, of which 187 were girls, and 9, "I'm not stupid", boys. This High School band is a treat to see and listen to.

The Onbashira is quite an exordinary sight to behold with 1000's taking part over those several months and willing to risk & lose there lives ,many have which they deem a great honour.
It's probably one of the oldest continuing rituals (1,200 years) of it's kind in the world. I've also only come across this recently and like orther dangerous endeavours you've reacted to I'm also fascinated by what extremes people are willing to take to feel so Alive in the moment.

How fun! A team sport where you can be crushed by a giant log. And people think American football and English rugby are violent. Very strange traditions. I can see why your ultimate trip would be to Japan.
I’d love to see one big hill where the starter fires a gun and the Japanese go like hell after the cheese, and the English joy ride a log right to an English soccer brawl.
How much work does it take to get those logs up the hills?
There are log flumes at all three Disney parks in Japan, with a 52 foot drop, travels at 45 mph, and is about a half mile long, and there is virtually no chance of getting killed. But hey, it's tradition, and unlike Disney, there probably isn't a minimum height requirement to ride a log at the Onbashira Festifval. 😛
You must be at least this height to be crushed to death by the log.
How about learning about the Indian sport of kabbadi? It's like a team tag, but the "raider" has to take their turn in a single breath and to prove they're not breathing they chant "kabbadi kabbadi kabbadi" for the ref to hear.

If you're looking for interesting sports, how about lumberjack competitions, also called "timbersports"? They cut or chop through logs to see who can do it fastest. The guys who do it are very strong and skilled. Here's a video of the 2013 U.S. championship:

Bonjour Marie! A little help since you didn't know how to pronounce these words: Fir (as in fir tree) is pronounced the same as Fur. The i in Shrine is long so it's pronounced like the letter i in the words fine, dine, and mine, and so Shrine rhymes with those words. With the letter H: usually in Europe the H is pronounced, but in the US it is typically silent. So in Europe it is usually pronounced Honorable (Hahn-or-uh-bull,) but in the US it is typically pronounced Onorable (On-Or-Uh-Bull.) Bonne journee! ~Be Blessed
Words of French origin often have a "h" silent in American English, but other words beginning with "h" have the letter pronounced.
I am very skeptical that these logs are actually cut from trees inside Japan. They simply don't have such old growth forests anymore. I am positive these are purchased from Brazil or Russia or Canada and shipped there. That being said, Marie is awesome.
