  • I check out all the things wrong with this hooptie and do a 0-60 test. The pinnacle of Chrysler was from the early 2000's to the recession of '09. Of course I'm kidding. This video gives you a glimpse of why the Third Gen, Jeep WK was the WORST Grand Cherokee ever. #daimlerchrysler #jeepgrandcherokee #americancars

For all of you who disagree with this video (and there's a lot of you), what IS the worst Grand Cherokee, if not the WK? I agree, there are many things wrong with this WK that could have been avoided with more consistent and mindful maintenance. That being said, here's a list of things that would not happen on any quality-built vehicle:
    1. Completely faded key fob
    2. Peeling paint, all over the body
    3. Broken horn
    4. Broken plastic door handles (this is a known issue)
    5. Broken heater core
    6. Brittle, broken plastic everywhere
    7. Rain water, diverting into interior of car
    8. Completely worn/faded interior buttons
    9. Coolant thermostat
    10. Non-serviceable driveshaft u-joints
    11. Sticking controls
    12. Flickering dash lights & Ignition switch issue
    13. Common transmission failure
    14. Many cases of engine failure at/around 75k miles (rod knock, head gaskets)
    15. Countless electrical and wiring issues
    16. Electrical and safety recalls
    17. Undiagnosable rattles and creaks
    etc...
None of these issues are considered "general maintenance" or "wear items". They're just poorly designed, produced and assembled components.
You all seem to be trashing the owner of this WK, but nobody is saying which gen Grand Cherokee they think is actually the best/worst. C'mon, guys, obviously not all Jeeps are garbage heaps.

By the way, the heater issue is caused by blend door breakage. ( I have two WJ's with the same issue) This is NOT unique to Jeeps or to Chrysler products. Your comment about the cause of the coolant temp seeming to drop as you drove tells me you don't know much about cars; it is NOT caused by a "stuck thermostat". • @RickHavok
      @RickHavok 4 года назад +5

Get a 4 ft piece of flexible electrical wire, open the sunroof, climb up on the door sill and look in the front corner. You'll see a small hole. Run the wire through the hole and pull it back out. Your drains are just clogged.
The fuel economy can be fixed with a tune or even just a PCM update. The oil burning is another story. It might need a valve job. I'd just buy new heads.
As far as rust goes, wash it regularly at a car wash with rust inhibitor. Fixing that depends on where the rust is, but if you knock it out, wire brush it, sand it, and patch it with fiberglass mat and epoxy it won't come back. You can sand it afterwards, prime it, wet sand and polish the paint easily, and do the entire job in a few hours over a weekend.
Check your starter wires and battery cables for corrosion, as well as the yellow ground wire going to the transfer case underneath.
Lastly, join a WK group on FB or something for advice. ;)

@@BigBadBlanc The interior door handles were definitely a big problem on the WKs. You can buy aftermarket replacements on Amazon for under $40 that work just fine and match the door panel. They are a bit of a pain to replace, because the original handles were attached to the back of the panel by sliding them onto many little plastic "posts" then melting the ends of those posts. So they are sort of "riveted" by those melted posts to the back of the door panel. You just have to carefully grind the tops of those posts off and the broken handle comes right off the door panel. The new handle then slides back onto the remains of the posts (so be careful not to grind them any shorter than flush with the old handle just so you can get it off). Then you install washers and screws that come with the handle into the hollow posts you just ground down. Voila! Brand new door handles that aren't broken.

I have an 05 Limited with the Hemi. The horn does have a lot to be desired. I have built mine for overlanding. The Alpine radio is known to be crap, mine comes on for a few seconds to a minute, depending on if its cold out. Once the head unit heats up, the screen goes off, but the rest does keep working, so I am using a blutooth adaptor to play music with.
The plastic inside is really cheap, even on the higher end version. I do have heated seats, auto headlights with auto brights and rain sensing wipers which are cool features, auto dimming mirrors. Yes, on the Limited, just about all of those buttons are taken up with things that do actually work. The morning knock of the Hemi, which is a well known thing, is very annoying, love the power, hate the gas mileage.
I got lucky it would seem, mine has very low miles, sitting at 71k miles right now. I do have a factory DVD player in mine, and my son likes it when out on the trails. I dont really have all the broken pieces all over the Jeep. I guess individual opinions will depend on the vehicle they have and the hand they were dealt, the one you are in looks like a POS that was not taken care of, which as not unique to American vehicles. I have owned a Mercedes and an Audi that was crap.
So far I love mine. This thing is very capable when off road.
I have a 2" Old Man Emu HD lift and a Rocky Road leveling kit and upper control arms. I am running a 265/70 R17 tire on stock rims, I have it on my channel if you want to see it.

I call total bull on this one. I'm an experienced Jeep builder (have owned over 15 in my lifetime including 4 CJs, an SJ Wagoneer, 2 YJs, 2 TJs, 3 XJs, 2 KJs, 2 ZJs, a WJ, and a WK). I love fixing old Jeeps up and giving them a new lease on life. I've worked on every Jeep I've owned and I've wheeled them too. I currently have a 2008 WK CRD. It is dead reliable and has a ton of power. I love the thing. It will take a beating on the trail and shake it off like it's nothing. It's got the traditional Jeep setup with a true transfer case with a low range and a solid rear axle. Mine also has Quadra Drive II which is awesome! She never gets stuck. The WK is as much a Jeep as any Jeep in my opinion and I think my opinion matters since I've owned just about every type of true Jeep built from 1978 to 2010. What's the worst Grand Cherokee you ask? I say none of them. They are all great vehicles but the least favorite I have owned was definitely my WJ if I have to pick one. The electrical system on that thing was a nightmare. I'd buy another WK over a WJ in a heartbeat even though I do love the classic 4.0 engine. The build quality on those wasn't great. The V8 versions seem to have even more issues. Give me a WK with a 4.7 or a 3.0 CRD any day. They are easy to work on and they are great 4x4s, especially the diesel. I also currently own an 88 YJ that is my perpetual project and a 96 XJ that I just picked up to repair and flip.

You know whats funny... my 2002 Dakota quad cab had a 4.7l V8 and AWD. My wife's 05 WK has the same engine and AWD. Pretty much the same setup. Just the difference in how they start is crazy. My truck had great throttle response, engine had a bunch of power. The Jeep though... sluggish. The WK is in pretty much amazing condition. Has the standard exhaust manifold leaks (which were easy to fix on the Dakota) but has this annoying stalling issue at red lights while in drive in low temps. I'm trying to sell it. My truck had more KM's on it and never gave me a problem. Chrysler cant figure it out. Thoughts anyone? I now have an 02 Dakota quad cab with the 5.9l. Sucks the fuel but the power is awesome. Thanks all.

A new job bought me a brand new '07 WK with the V6. It was ok the three years I stayed on that job and I spent a lot of time in deep snow, up and down unpaved mountain roads in the Virginia Shenandoah Valley. The one thing that would keep me from owning the WK was the constant intermittent transmission problems. Would not shift, then would not take throttle and get stuck in OD, which nearly caused several accidents while merging onto a highway. I found countless complaints of this online but the dealer's response was "never heard of that before." They'd keep it a day, change fluid, make "an adjustment" and give it back to me (under warranty, but the invoiced amount was over $800 per visit). Then it would happen again, and again. It was still under warranty when I left that job and I would NEVER have one if I were paying for it or the dealer "service." At this time I have an XJ and WJ, both 4.0L and they're tanks. Looking for another WJ now.

The clunking noise is probably the bushings on the front diff. My wife and I each have the 2005 5.7 limited. Mines lifted and hers is lowered. Mine has been really reliable which is why my wife decided to get one for herself. There’s a lot to do on a used one, but once you’re done, I think it’s an awesome Jeep to have. Especially the 5.7.

Seems like this is more a review of a poorly maintained and cared for Jeep then the Jeep WK itself. I have owned a Jeep WK for some time, the engine is underpowered (v6) with a really low towing capacity for a Grand Cherokee (normally around 5000lbs for the v6/I6 where this one is 3500lbs) but fairly reliable. The only real issue I have had over the years is my wiper blade switch wearing out and the wiper blades come on randomly when you bump the arm. I also have a Jeep ZJ and no the WK does not compare, personally I would avoid the WK2 as I dont want a battery under my passenger seat.
Jeep wave approved, though you will get some strange looks. A Jeep is still a Jeep.

I have an 06 Overland with none of the problems listed... in fact not problems at all. It has over 200k miles on it and I take it off road regularly including water fording. Sorry there buddy, but I don't think the WK is the problem, I think it's your used car buying skills.
The available Quadradrive II 4x4 system is the best in the world, utilizing computer controlled clutch differentials that are capable of vectoring torque to each wheel individually in infinite amounts up to 100%
PS, It's an 05, get some new shocks and springs. Personally, I recommend the Old Man Emu or Eibach spring kits for lift or lowering, but I think you'll find the Bilstien shocks the best.

@@NotSoHandyCarGuy Yes, I did read it before I replied and I also realize you're not the owner, but you reviewed it as if you had bought it.
I still felt like I should comment though so viewers could get an idea what WK's are like from an owners standpoint and to point out that assessing a used vehicle and/or bringing it back to spec takes some know-how. I probably would have walked away from that particular one only because the 3.7 has to be very well maintained. The rest is easily and inexpensively salvageable imo.
It pays to know exactly what you're buying and getting in to repair and upgrade wise, and that includes your intended usage and 4x4 systems.
I mean if you knew it was not well cared for maybe you should have picked a better example and not posted this review. Did you not want a review of your review? :)
What I did not comment on was the worst GC. That's a tough one because they all have devoted owners and it again depends on the way it was maintained, but my pick would be the ZJ since I feel they progressively improved for the most part since their inception. I didn't hate my ZJ, but that was also before a lot of improvements in cars since.

In 2011, interiors were revamped on anything and everything in the Chrysler family of vehicles. The horrible jatco CVT's in the Caliber and the 2 Jeep products that shall remain nameless, kicked to the curb.. As for this particular Jeep, yes... it should of held up better. My key fob has all it's paint, and the clear coat is only starting to peel a bit on the roof. I can totally agree that the interior plastic is meh, but other than that I love my WK. It's fine off road on fire roads, and some moderate loose rock trails in SoCal, but I'm also trying to drive to work in this thing. It's comfortable on road, and has seen more trails than 98% of the built lifted Jeeps out here in cali. I don't understand how people can just blatantly ignore the issues their car has, and let it get to the state the one was in that you reviewed.

Stop disrespecting grand cherokee. Damn it. I am still driving my 2005 GC. It is a good truck. I drive in 200 to 300 miles every other day. It runs perfectly if you just take care of it with minimum maintenance.

My Jeep revs a lot higher. The trans is not down shifting like it should, that transmission is on its last leg
