I blew up the Reliant 750 Race Engine! What broke and did I fix it?

- A year ago the Jeffrey Mk3b 750cc Reliant powered sports racer's engine blew up at the Doune Hillclimb. At the time I thought the timing chain had snapped which would have caused extensive damage. As I result I did not investigate the carnage until August this year. Luckily, the damage was not too bad as it was the distributor drive gears and camshaft which were damaged when a small pin came adrift and stopped the distributor from turning. A replacement camshaft was sourced from a 750MC racer and a new distributor was purchased. A shake-down session at the Forrestburn hillclimb did not go to plan as the new Accuspark electronic ignition module failed after one run. A replacement distributor was borrowed from my Hamblin Cadet's Reliant engine and this enabled the Jeffrey to run on the Sunday's hillclimb. The Jeffrey ran very well at the Bo'ness Revival and September Doune Hillclimbs. The engine still sings along at up to 8500 rpm!
Great job Doug, you have the 750 running in top form once again. Cheers
Hi Lloyd, great to have the car running again. Now I just need to remember how to drive quickly.
Hi Doug, lots of your and Angus’ heads in this. Glad the car was alive for Bo’ness. Need to get out of west coast and visit events again
Hi Phil, we have been missing you at events. Do you still have the Sylva?
Hi Doug, yes still have the Sylva in bits, also midas, which I’m trying to get rid of with trailer. Drive currently looks like a garage😝
@@philrowlands28 Always had a fondness for the GTM stable, some very tidy looking designs in my opinion. My wife might well recognise that description!
Great work and great video too
Thanks!
Those mounting plates front and rear , why not have them made in aluminium or at least drill some lighting holes in them ?
Yes, that is possible. It is always good to add lightness!
Yup could have been worse, glad you managed to source a replacement cam. Was that a solid pin in the drive? I've only ever seen roll pins used in D series distributors. Ice Cream tubs are great storage, that's my excuse for being a regular Mackies customer anyway. Singing along at good pace most definitely.
The remains of the pin did seem to be a roll pin rather than solid.
Looks like an opportunity to bigger and swap in a Ford Ecoboost, Suzuki G13 or Motus V4.
Engine needs to be a pre-1973 model as the car runs in a Historic class.
9k engine revs is 4.5 k revs on distributor. Any advantage in a threaded pin with loctite?
did you send the module back under warranty?
Not yet - thanks for reminding me!
are you not in the AA?
Yes - nearly drove me to drink.
What for HP does that engine make?
I've never had the car on a dyno. However going by the weight of the car and its 1/4 mile times, I think it is about 55 bhp.
I was guessing 80HP@@DougsShed
