- In this video I'll show you how to paint the new Be'lakor The Dark Master model from Games Workshop! This is a brilliant new kit with an absolute ton of detail, and can be used in Age of Sigmar as well as Warhammer 40K
this is perhaps my longest single video, so strap in, and enjoy it! Be'lakor looks great and I hope you have as much fun painting him as I did!

I really like longer painting videos - could easily watch this for an hour. This one teaches a lot about painting black. :-)
Cheers - glad you like the longer ones :) I have a fee haha!
Just finished to paint mine using this video, many thanks !
Awesome :)
I've been waiting for this!
Side note: Corvus back is underrated as a paint in my opinion
Hope you enjoyed it!
Love corvus black
Mines arriving tomorrow woohoo!
Awesome!
I love how efficient with colours and creating those subtle changes in black
Thank you!
Beautifully painted as always. Keep it up!
Cheers thank you!
Thank u this is very helpful as just got belakor and the sword looks like a challenge 😅.
Cheers! Hopefully the video helps!
Thanks a lot! Followed most of your recipe and the result is amazing!
Awesome thanks for sharing!
I used your method , thanks a lot!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Just finished him! Amazing tutorial! Thank you very much :D
Brilliant - glad you enjoyed it!
This is fantastic, thank you for this tutorial it'll help me for when I paint my one.
No problem - glad you liked it!
I was looking for a guide that dealt with how to paint black when the model was large with lots of detail without making a dark featureless mess. This was perfect. Gonna borrow the style for my grimdark tyranids. Thankyou so much for such an excellent video
Thanks Warren - glad you found it useful!!!!
Great idea with using Dark Reaper / Thunderhawk blue for the skin ! Makes it look a lot better than the standard grey skin tone.
Cheers 👍🏻
@@ThePaintingCoach I will be "borrowing" that colour scheme for my Be'Lakor's skin ;)
Feel free :)
I just started getting into 40k and only yesterday bought my first set of figures and took part in one of the things where they teach you the very basics of it, I got some Adeptus custodes due to them being my favourite, would really love for a tutorial for them, you do a really god job at painting and I hope to be able to get as good as you
Thanks - glad you enjoyed the video and welcome to the tutorial! I'll do a custodes tutorial when their 9th edition codex is released 👍🏻
Great video! Nice to see I'm not the only one who uses drybrushing for volumetric shading. Also really like the use of some tints to the wings and blacks for a subtle color differentiation, I'm going to keep that in mind on my next project!
Cheers 👍🏻
Absolutely superb.
Cheers mate 👍🏻
Great tutorial, amazingly painted model.
Thanks Alastair - appreciate it!
Fantastic tutorial!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Can't wait for mine to arrive
Hope the vid was helpful!
Top vid, easy to follow visuals. Best vids of this kind on RUclips. Please keep 'em coming.
Thanks David - appreciate it 👍🏻
My dark master arrives today! Watched this 3 times now. Thinking of a color scheme for the sword might want to make it reddish/orange - rule of cool
Awesome - check out my Guilliman video where I did something similar!
Randomly came by your chanel, amazing stuff!!
Thanks Edgar - appreciate it!
you lost me until the first wash for the skin. very nice! i am loving all these black demon flesh vids coming out finally!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@ThePaintingCoach the official GW vid was drybrushing 2 colors over chaos black spray primer! Duncans video is delayed a week so yours is the only one out there besides our GeeDub Overlords. have a bloodthirster laying around waiting for some black demon flesh!
Haha glad I could fill that gap!
Really good channel this.Nice lessons and good explanations of what and why you doing things. And good camera also. Keep up the great work :)
Thanks Anders - really appreciate it!
ahhh metallics on the wet pallet!!!!
My boy! great work coach!
Cheers mate!
Love this tutorial! You mentioned early in the video to not worry about the lighter colours for the wings looking chalky as you would show how to blend them later; I must have missed the part when you demonstrated that.
I think it was the slight glaze I put over them
Looking forward to this one
Hope you enoy it pal!
@@ThePaintingCoach 😎👍🏻
Dude you need to open an online academy I would easily pay for more tutorials like this.
Thanks Robert that's very kind! I'm afraid I don't have the time at the moment as I also work full time but mayne in the future - I iust have a Patreon for now
Epic tutorial here, fantastic job!
Thanks!
1st video of yours I've caught from the PK twitter shoutout. Absolute class mate, love how accessible this was - made me feel as a relative newbie I could achieve something somewhat close to that and is really motivational!
Hi Fergus - that's awesome - so glad you enjoyed the video! I am curious - what was the PK Twitter shout out?
Brilliant,
Thanks
Wow fantastic as usual, love the base, love the miniture, love the wings and really love the sword. Just love all of it.
I've just got the studio XL myself didn't know you could clean the sheet, I got extra and was going to bin them like I do with my home made wet pallet will last a bit longer now 😁
In one of your comment below you mention about the paint separation. When I did my research on the pallet a few people said the same, the lid fit is so good that some of the water that does need to escape can't so they opened the lid and move it, so 2 of the corners are exposed and they said that helped.
Thanks Lee! I'm using the new palette paper that isn't released yet - it doesn't come out until the KS on May 20th 👍🏻 You won't be able to wash yours until you get the new one
@@ThePaintingCoach oh right glad you said about the new paper. I was thinking how did I miss that when I was looking into it 😁
Haha no worries!
Loving the content as always!
Cheers mate!
This was great!
Thanks Rick!
@@ThePaintingCoach I do not have an airbrush to apply the abbadon black - is there a spray brand/ technique you recommend instead?
I would recommend thinning it down and just painting it on with a large brush - the point of the abaddon black is to make it easy to repair any mistakes
Nice, this look amazing, too bad l over sleep at the pre order
Thanks Tony! He will be back soon!
I've just followed this tutorial, and finished my 3rd model. You might be my favourite Welshman, well I had to google some others and sadly you aren't quite first as Anthony Hopkins is well, a legendary actor. Anyway, getting distracted this was so easy to follow I salute you good sir, that lava tutorial was especially *chefs kiss* now on to my next mini - do I tackle flesh eater courts, begin a semi conversion of Sigvald to be a vampire lord based on Castlevania's Alucard or go for semi-painted second hand Archaon? thinkingfaceemoji
Thanks Lee - I really appreciate that haha! I'm glad the video was easy to follow and you got the results you wanted haha - sounds like you have your hands full with decisions! I'll have more vampire content soon
👏
Cheers mate
Looks like the sculptor took a lot of inspiration from Archvillain Games and Creature Caster. Archvillain's Armaros (Balor) also has a flaming sword and skulls hanging on his wings.
The Archvillain stuff is bonkers detailed!
@@ThePaintingCoach Do you have any painting videos of their models? If not please do some.
I don't - and I think I'd need videos twice as long to do them haha - maybe if they sponsored a video 🤣
I'm painting Be'lakor at the mo, loving this guide.
I don't have Aethermatic Blue and I'd rather avid buying another contrast paint just for one model. I have Nighthaunt Gloom, Nihilakh Oxide, Nightshade, Greenshade, Druchii Violet, and Hexwraith Flame. Do you think any of these would be a suitable substitute for the chest & sword? I'm thinking Gloom watered down a bit with Lahmian Medium might work but I don't want to try it and end up ruining the paint job on a model like this. Thanks!
Thanks Tom - Hexwraith Flame might be a good one - the green will give a really nice contrast
@@ThePaintingCoach Thanks for the speedy response. I'll give it a go with Hexwraith Flame.
No worries! If in doubt always practice on a spare part!
Could you make a Carcharodons Space Marine tuturial?
I'll add it to the list 👌🏻
@@ThePaintingCoach Thank you! 😁
My Be'lakor has fallen foul of the Chaos Gods machinations at the GW warehouse, but all good things......
Hopefully he arrives soon!
Man, i want to see your work with Archaon Everchosen... Just my hopes)
Thanks - maybe one day!
Hello. I’ve been wanting to get into painting warhammer models for a while. I got this for Xmas as my current goal after I get some practice in. Do you have a “starting” or videos that goes over basic stuff for painting? I’ve never done any of this before.
Merry Xmas and happy new year 🙂
Hi Blake - Happy New Year! I don't have a getting started video per se, but it's a great idea for a video in the future!
Check out some of my space marine videos as they are pretty badic, as well as my videos on thinning paint and brush selection
Hopefully that should help!
The other tip I have is to use some of the spare parts to practice - so once you have built the model, take some leftovers and prime them first, and practice putting paint on them prior to the main model!
Welcome to the hobby - if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!
With the black Templar, Leviadon blue and contrast medium did you mix them, or you apply them in order?
Mixed it all together 👍🏻
@@ThePaintingCoach okay thank you! I’m new to painting and warhammer and belakor will be my very first one. So once you mixed the colors did you add a little bit of water?
what would be a good substitute for space wolve grey?
You could mix some white into the previous highlight colour - not too much though
@@ThePaintingCoach Cheers bro and thanks for the content too.
No problem 👍🏻
Very pretty, have you ever considered doing your own version of Magnus?
Thanks! I may do Magnus when the Thousand Sons get a 9th edition release!
How did u manage to get the color on the wings on smooth parts? When I dry brush there is only color on raised parts thus leaving most the wing black.and what does go on smooth part is patchy
Just work it in there with a smaller dry brush
Hey just wondering, what brushes do you use?
Rosemary and Co Series 33
Did you apply matte/gloss varnish for protecting the model after completion?
Hi Dirk - no I didn't - the varnish will alter the finish and as he is display, he should be fine
@@ThePaintingCoach Thanks for the reply. I'll be applying some sort of varnish as I will be fielding mine in games. I'd hate for all of that hard work to slowly be chipped away! Any recommendation on which you would use if you were painting to play?
Depends on if you are painting it on or varnishing it, as well as the effect you want - either way the vallejo premium range is good, and if you want it really matte, AK Interactive ultrs matte is good
@@ThePaintingCoach Thank you kindly!
Great stuff; makes me wish I had one of those baddies myself :)
I'm definitely going to try out some of your colour choices.
Just one thing (that I did probably miss...?): How did you do the chaos star type metal thingy on his base? The dark / rusty brassy tone is something I might have to try on my Scions of the Flame
Thanks! Exactly the same as the rest of the gold - it may appear darker as the base is putting it in shadow
@@ThePaintingCoachThanks for the fast reply; might indeed seem darker to me coz of the shadows. It's kind of visible around the 26:15 mark... might use it anyway and go to some contrast teals or greens to get to the darkness I was thinking of. Thanks a lot for all the work and the excellent fan service!
No problem! Good luck!
What brand of paints do you use ???
Citadel mainly 👍🏻
Nice work 💪 the sword is both epic and simple! One quick question - metallic paints ok on the wet palette? They don't damage the foam? Thanks!
Thanks Dave! I haven't had any issue other than the paint separating fairly quickly 👍🏻
@@ThePaintingCoach thanks, I'll give it a try!
No problem!
Could you give me an advice about a recipe for a black bloodthirster 😂
You could use the same flesh recipe of belakor!
@@ThePaintingCoach I think that but I want to look darker
You can thin black templar contrast - maybe 4:1, and put this over it like a glaze - and you can add more layers to go as dark as you want
@@ThePaintingCoach thanks a lot man
Is this the same painted model up on eBay at the moment?
Hi Edwin - yes it is 👍🏻
@@ThePaintingCoach literally just started watching it on ebay and then immediately found your video! Amazing stuff hehe
Haha thanks!
Well no I'm gonna buy a belakor as my first big boy painting project
Awesome 👍🏻
I don't have all these colors, how shall I mix them?
Depends what colours you have already - will determine what to mix with that - just adding black or white to make colours lighter or darker can make them lose vibrancy - let me know what you nded help with
@@ThePaintingCoach Mostly the gray colors, but my local store is also out of aethermatic blue
Aethermatic blue you may struggle with - unless you can thin down some baharroth blue
For greys which ones have you got? Adding a touch of blue in migjt help
@@ThePaintingCoach well, I have mechanicus standard and some WalMart greys lol
So maybe try adding some blue in, then use black ajd white
What is the brush that you use for drybrushing ?
I use makeup brushes - should be a link in the description
@@ThePaintingCoach the link is dead but I will find an alternative. Many thsnks !
Ah thanks for letting me know - will check that out!
Great tutorial although I think I’m missing something, what did you use to tie the skin colours? Did you wash it with something ? Thank un advance
Thanks Giovanni! Yes I did and it is in the video - it's a mix of leviadon blue, black templar and contrast medium
@@ThePaintingCoach completely missed that! Thank you. Leviadon im missing, do you think it would work with talassar mixed with more black Templar ?
No problem - you may get a different tone but I can't see why it would not work
@@ThePaintingCoach appreciate the help, thank you!
No problem 👍🏻
Just bought a fuck tonne of paint cause of this video Jesus Christ
Enjoy!
is he 40k chaos
Yeah he can be used in AoS and 40K
As a note, I bought him for my Horus Heresy 30k daemon army
