  • Carrie Coon joins BUILD to discuss the new season of FX's "Fargo" and her role in HBO's "The Leftovers." In "Fargo," Carrie plays police chief Gloria Burgle, the latest in the series’ famed canon of female sheriffs. She also plays Nora Durst in the HBO drama, where she won critics over with her portrayal of the grief-stricken character. What's it like to be on two hit series? What does she have planned next? She'll answer that and more when she takes the stage. Interview at 692 Broadway in NYC for BUILD Series.

Coon is remarkably charismatic here - she's an interviewer's dream. (She'd also make a very good interviewer.) I'm writing this in 2022 and Coon currently plays one of the leads in The Gilded Age, the ruthless, social-climbing arriviste Bertha Russell. I took a look at this interview from a few years back because I wanted to get a sense of who Carrie Coon was as a person and how it both lends and contrasts with her Gilded Age character. No question: Carrie's extraordinary presence definitely informs and shapes Bertha. She knows how to hold your attention. Of course, unlike Bertha, Carrie is vastly more conscientious, self-deprecating and much funnier and sweeter. But what she shares with Bertha is an undeniable sense of drive. That comes through big time.

Her speech patterns and pitch are smooth, like butter. Her voice is soothing; also she has no regional accent. Makes me wonder if she can sing well.

Beautiful lady. David Thewlis stole the show with his incredible portrayal of corruption. The villain in most movies is more interesting than the hero is. Because the hero or heroine can end up looking bland or boring by comparison. The villains have panache and complexity usually so they are more interesting to watch. She is pretty and lovely to watch but Thewlis was fascinating and compelling to watch. I also wanted to hear whatever he was saying to try to understand his motivation and reason for being they way he was. How did he arrive at this point?
I enjoyed the series and couldn’t tell who was going to win in the end.
I did think she was outmatched by him. He even told her she was a novice and questioned if she knew what she was doing. Because he was a pro at it and knew her every move before she did.
It’s like a chess match between a Master and a Novice. The Novice could get lucky and win a match but it’s not likely to surprise and defeat the Master. Great Series!
This is the second Golden Age of TV! With these incredible films that are Series with Story Arcs and tackle Adult subjects like films do.
Fargo and Breaking Bad and many other shows are going to be great DVD Box sets that hold up to repeated viewings.
There are currently 10 seasons of Walking Dead available on DVD that remind me of what an incredible roller coaster 🎢 ride that show was. Same with Fargo.
I like that I can’t predict who will win and the many twists and turns of the plots. What a wild ride it is and very violent at times as well.
Walking Dead gave me some jolts at times. Things I didn’t see coming. The arrival of Negan and his Bloody Baseball Bat and the way he killed Glen and the Ginger man. That shocked me because it was so brutal and it felt real. I felt like I was watching a double murder. It was disturbing to say the least. I’ll never forget it.
And when Negan shoved the Doctor into the Furnace to burn 🔥and his legs were still sticking out. That killing was off the chain crazy.
    I thought this guy’s a ruthless killer!
    That was so brutal!
I felt like Eugene who was scared sh@tless! I related to him the most. He just wanted to survive and not get burned alive🔥. Can’t blame him for that! Who does?

    • @cindytartt4048
      @cindytartt4048 2 года назад +1

I agree. But I look back at the early millennium from The Wire, House, then years later, this arrival of ‘new’ Television you describe in say, Rectify, a truly spectacular warm as treacle piece with Aden Young. Also Mad Men (good & bad). But I look back at The West Wing as bringing television to a level which hadn’t been seen before: it refused to dumb anything down. Leftovers was like this, also.

It's really interesting what she says about vocal trends and vocal fry. She says that women use it to be non-threatening. I agree with her certainly that the high pitched baby girl talk is disempowering. However, I listened to a podcast about vocal fry and I remember the experts saying that vocal fry was in fact young women's attempt to LOWER their voice and that the 'fry' bit at the end was a way to lower the register of their tonality.
I personally don't agree that it makes a female voice more authoritative. As a young woman myself I find it grating and a weird affectation. I don't have it myself and I agree with Carrie that it makes people take you less seriously.

making the guests hold a mic for 30 MINUTES is just rude & pretentious (another space for your logo, really?) . plus, it sounds horrible. the voices are amplified like they're speaking at a noisy outdoor location (park, etc). in reality they're basically in a coffee shop. can barely hear if the audience of 5 people chuckles or not
EDIT: haha, yeah like at 4:54 or so the host says "really?" but sounds like he's in the back of the room.
