Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

Every time I see these beautiful animals ( and their equally beautiful carers) I just start bawling! 😭
All these orphans are so lucky to have been rescued by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. They may no longer have their own mothers to look after them, but they will loved and cared for by the Heroes in green jackets and one day they will get to be released back into the wild.
Daphne Sheldrick once wrote " One last triumph I longed for, was to be able to look with pride on an animal like a elephant , born of a mother I had nurtured from the start, and think, deep inside my heart, " But for me...."

What a beautiful video!! The elephant Matriarch I admire most is Murera as she is a true Warrior after everything she went through as a baby fighting through her horrific injuries and it being recommended to end her suffering yet the incredible human Matriarch Dame Daphne saw something in her and gave her a chance. Now she is a mother herself something that shouldn’t have been in her future but she beat the odds having the Princess of Ithumba who has stolen all of our hearts Murera is a survivor and an amazing mother/leader.🩶🐘🩷🌸🥹

I have so much awe and respect for the keepers who care for these beautiful animals. The love and patience that is clearly obvious shines through, and is reinforced by the fact that year after year, the elephants who have gone on to live in the wild come back to show off their wild-born families. What an amazing legacy.

Great question. Our Nairobi based Keepers wear the well-known green coats, as do the Keepers at our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit. Those at our Ithumba and Voi Reintegration Units in Tsavo East National Park, and at our Kaluku Neonate Unit, which borders Tsavo East, wear the khaki coloured coats. It all comes down to climate - the temperatures are regularly in the mid to high 30 degrees (Celsius) in Tsavo, and can even exceed 40 degrees. That's mid to high 90s, and over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. With dark colours absorbing more sunlight and getting warmer, our Keepers wear the lighter coats in Tsavo
