  • Whether you're a seasoned bro or just picking up the needle, this video is packed with game-changing tips and secrets that you won't want to miss.
First up, we tackle one of the most frustrating aspects of sewing: threading the machine. If you struggle with this step due to poor eyesight or shaky hands, I've got a trick that will change your life. Simply cut your thread at an angle before threading-it slides right in, reducing breakages and frustration. Plus, I'll let you in on why using the same type of thread for both your spool and bobbin is crucial for consistent results.
Next, I'll share a personal story about my LASIK surgery gone wrong, a tale that went viral and caught the attention of the former head of the FDA. It's a stark reminder of why it's essential to question even FDA-approved procedures and advocate for safer alternatives. This story not only highlights the importance of awareness but also the unexpected paths our personal experiences can lead us on.
Moving on to sewing needles, I emphasize the importance of regularly changing your sewing machine needle-a simple yet often overlooked practice that ensures your projects look clean and professional. Just like tires on a car, needles wear out and can cause a host of problems if not replaced. I'll guide you on when and how to change your needle, especially when switching between different fabric types, like going from a light t-shirt to heavy denim.
Furthermore, I discuss the common mistake of sewing over pins. While it might seem like a time-saver, this practice can damage your machine and needle, potentially leading to accidents. I strongly advise removing pins as you sew, ensuring a smoother and safer sewing experience.
Lastly, I introduce one of the best-kept secrets in the tailoring world: the magnetic seam guide. This inexpensive tool is a powerhouse for achieving straight, professional-looking seams. It's adjustable, easy to use, and prevents fabric from wandering under the needle, ensuring every stitch is exactly where it needs to be. I'll show you how to use it effectively, transforming your projects from homemade to high-end.

Just a tip my grandmother taught me, putting a small scrap of white paper behind the needle when trying to thread it will help you see the hole.

Stylish D, you're the best! I've been watching your channel for years and I'm not a dude. Ladies are "expected" to kinda know this stuff and I've seen other people sewing online, but not really tailoring. You hit on all the "real" stuff. I know you have girls in your household, would you ever consider showing tailoring for us girls?

Thanks for the years of support, I really appreciate it! And I've thought about expanding into women's tailoring tutorials, I think it might happen sooner rather than later to be honest!

I remember that lasik video. I appreciated that it did address what you went through but wasn't all doom-and-gloom and alarm bells for everyone. You did a really great job addressing the risks, and even mentioned that you didn't regret your choice. I got lasik two years ago after considering all the risks, and thankfully it worked out great for me. Interesting to hear about the FDA updates though, I think more awareness for risk is always a good idea. Cheers, SD!

On topic: It is baffling to me that anyone would ever suggest sewing over pins. Want to get the answer to that argument real fast? Go ask your local sewing machines repair person if it's a good idea to sew over pins. Listen to them say, with a huge smile, "sure, sew over them all the time, every time. Never stop and take out a pin, just sew over that sucker", and then watch as they pull out the brochure for that cruise they've been dying to take, which you will now be paying for. 'Cause it's a surefire way to eff up a machine.
Off topic (I mean, off topic of sewing): About 15 years ago, a student was leaving and the mother was saying something about how it was wonderful that she could now see the door handle without her glasses, because she had just had lasik surgery. The mother of the next student was coming at the same time, the wife of an eye surgeon. She said that her husband spent fully half of his professional time urging people not to get the procedure, that way too many people ended up with way too many problems.
Oh, and ETA-- I'm telling EVERYbody.

I know right?? It's insane how many people tell me to just sew over the pins and that they've been doing it for 30 years without issue. Anecdotal evidence at its finest haha.

Can you post a link to the magnetic seam guide you have? The walmart website indicated there were none in the store near me and there are so many on amazon but none I saw looked like the one in your video.

Ok ok I get it SD, perhaps the whole indoor plant spin-off second RUclips Channel is too soon given that watering your co-host in the background isn't doing much - water seems to bounce right off - but perhaps the time is right to shorten those drapes that have been dragging and run up a few snazzy pillows (we call them cushions in the real world) with plenty of tassels around the border with an SD embroidered motif and logo.
We have every faith in you. 🪡
