Here's Why I Retired Earlier Than Expected

- An unexpected medical problem forced me to retire a couple of months earlier than expected. Now I need to have surgery in order to be well enough to pack up all of our belongings and move them all to Washington in time for the September 1st closing date on our new house.
The video actually begins with the story of a visit we made to Washington to see our dream house after construction mostly completed. There are only a few small details to tend to in the interior of the house, but quite a bit of landscaping still to do in the front and back yards.
Using my Mavic Mini drone, I give you some fantastic aerial views of our new house and what will be our new hometown: Pasco, Washington... one of the Tri Cities of Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco, in southeastern Washington state.
People hear that we're moving to the Pacific Northwest and assume we'll get lots of rain... but that's because they don't understand the geography of Washington. On the state's southeastern side, it's desert land. Pasco typically gets an annual rainfall of only six inches! Yet ever minute, about 90 million gallons of water flows through Pasco in the Columbia River!
The house we had constructed for us is known as the Ivy Leaf floorplan by Hammerstrom Construction, in phase three of the Spencer Estates subdivision. More about that will be coming up in my next video.
Can’t believe me, a 15 year old, loves to watch content that a retired man makes (good luck on your surgery jim)

Wishing you a speed recovery, dear friend.
Recover soon, and well, Jim. Sending you best wishes.
Hope the operation goes smoothly and you have a fast recovery.
Congratulations on the house and (upcoming) retirement! I'm sorry you have to have surgery - may your recovery be smooth and quick! My best to you & Kellyn!
Congrats on the retirement and good luck on the operation. I have been through Pasco and it always seems like a nice place. Have always enjoyed the videos. Look forward to seeing them again once you heal.
Good luck with the surgery, Jim!
Please dont quit youtube you're the best
Hello Jim, congratulations on your “last day of work” this should be a very exciting time in your life and I am sure it will be once you have, and recover from your surgery. Your new dream home looks amazing! Wishing you a happy, healthy retirement! 🍀🍀👍😊
The saying, "if its meant for you, wont go past you" fits Jim. Meant to be. Excited for you both. New home looks beautiful. Best wishes re surgery and time to book/hire company to pack up for you. Good 8 weeks recovery, to be safe👍😁😁
I wish you the best of luck Jim!!
Easy to find on Google Earth with that backyard loop. It's amazing how much water was moving in that river from the aerial shots. Steer clear of the virus
Regarding Google Earth... you meant that theoretically, someday, it would be easy to spot my property on Google Earth, right? Because when I look at Google Earth Pro, what I see in my neighborhood is an aerial photo from about 4 years ago when the area all around my property was still farmland. Not only do they not show houses in my neighborhood, they don't show houses in the neighborhood that was built before mine, or the one that was built before that one. The photo is years out of date.
@@JimZim Im hearing you, I was future thinking. New maps have become a HOT industry. Look at Nearmaps but they will hit you up for a good current look at what's going on at your property. They have a very cool timeline feature that goes back in time over many high definition photos. Google maps have a timeline feature but it's not very good and there are too many gaps. It's funny but not funny, Google went around years ago buying out all the independent mapping utilities, some had huge databases of followers who would add to the maps. But now we are stuck with Google's version of the world which as you have said is often woefully behind with current images.
Hope all goes well! Enjoy a long and healthy retirement. I retired in April 2019 age 60 and love it! We kicked off with a 17 day Viking holiday in New York, from where we sailed to Bermuda and and around the Caribbean on Viking Sea...I loved your Viking review! Keep Safe + Sane from Brighton, England 🥳
Awww Jim. I am so sorry to hear about the carpal tunnel. I am glad you can have surgery on it. I wish you a speedy recovery. Best wishes.
Good luck Jim, I wish you a speedy recovery!
Hope you are okay Jim! That loop around your yard looks amazing for trains
Hello Jim, My wife and I are going to do the similar thing except we’re moving to South Carolina near Myrtle Beach that’s gonna be our retirement home. And I wish you the best on your surgery and quick recovery take care my friend. And the thing about South Carolina no snow. Mr. Bill CNW. From the suburbs of Chicago
Jim I hope your surgery goes well and you recover soon! I hope you retire well and enjoy a smooth recovery
Good luck on the surgery and speedy recovery.
Good luck Jim! Let’s hope the surgery goes well.
Happy retirement!! New house and move and surgery. You will see as we did that you are just as busy after retirement! More fun busy, though.
Hope to see you well!
Speedy recovery & safe travels!
Good luck Jim
Hope the surgery and move go well. My 3yo train enthusiast loves your videos which we watch together. He favourites are the recent loo roll delivery and the unboxing “with the wooden box train”.
OMG my brother and his family lives in Pasco Wa. He is one of the fire chief with the Government.
You got this Jim. Best of luck with the surgery and the move!
Best wishes for your surgery Jim hope all goes well.. congratulations on your early retirement look forward to a lot more Vlogs now that have more free time lol.. ps beautiful new home 👍🏻🍾🥂
Love your new home. Best wishes on your upcoming surgery. I will stay tuned. God bless
Join the club on the carpel tunnel...
It's a bummer ☹️
Good luck... looking forward to the tracks at the new house.
Good luck on the arm surgery
Best wishes for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery!
Hope you get better soon 👍
Good luck with your surgery sir.
The geography of the desert from Arizona extends all the way into south eastern part of British Columbia Canada. Yes Canada has desert and in the summer months gets 100 degree temperatures and above. Nice video and congratulations on your retirement. Well deserved 👍🇨🇦
I am so sorry you have to have surgery. In fact I am sorry for everyone in their 60's who has unexpected medical problems. You still have a lot of life in you in your 60's, but you're certainly not young anymore. You're old enough to have grown children.
wishing you all the best for your surgery and the upcoming move!
Wishing your a speed recovery sir - With lots of Love & Prayers from India
Sorry about the Carpal Tunnel, that really sucks, I wish you a speedy recovery! Your new place looks great, You will love Pasco. Get a pontoon boat! BTY, in Washington we don't Tan, we Rust! LOL at least that's what we do on the west side of the mountains.
Best of luck for a quick recovery and all the best for you both in your new home! Can't wait to see the rails on the new outdoor design!!
Congratulations on retirement! I retired early in January to take all the cruises my wife had booked for 2020. Joke’s on me, we only got to take two of them before the plague hit. Best wishes on the surgeries and the new home!
If you got two cruises in before the shutdown this year, you did better than me! I only got one done, in January, and never made it to the second cruise I had planned for this year.
Hope it all goes smooth speedy recovery!!
Jim, good luck with the surgery!! I just had my right wrist carpal tunnel surgery Wednesday. I am surprised how soon I was able to do things again. I can type and work a computer mouse already. I probably could have done it the next day. Lifting things and pulling doors open is still out of the question though. Found you from your cruising videos and I am glad I did!
I hope you will not mind if I pray for you, your surgery, and your move to Washington. You take care and I'll be looking for your next video.
Glad to hear from ya, bud! Stay well.
Congratulations, Happy Retirement! Hope you are feeling better soon!
Get well Soon Jim!
I sympathize with you, Jim. My grandfather had the same issue when he was still around and even after surgery it was hell for about the first year. Hope everything works out for you though and you have a quick recovery. Maybe you can talk the wifey into lending you a hand, no pun intended. If there's anyway I can help you out too, feel free to ask. Not sure what good I'll be all the way over here on the other side of the country, but I try to be supportive of my fellow Tubers whenever I can.
Good luck with your surgery and enjoy your retirement. I love it after nursing for 42 years!
Congratulations on the retirement! My husband had both hands done last year and he did great. No more braces. BTW, it was about a week before he could grasp things well enough to function things like putting on his pants and found that elastic band shorts worked the best. Best of luck.
Good luck with the surgery Jim!
Very nice ariel shots Hope you recover quickly.
Good Luck and get well soon! God bless you.
Congrats on your retirement
Hope you heal up fast and easy!
Hope the operation(s) go well & you recover swiftly
Get well soon. I love your videos, especial the cruisevideos.
Good luck with the surgery and the move! I hope it all goes really smoothly with minimal pain.
Get better soon! While your up in Washington and get the chance, I would recommend checking out the old abandoned Milwaukee road grade
Now you can get more track to put in the house LOL. I love your videos. I am a train lover myself. I plan on driving one when I get older.
Get well soon, wishing you a speedy recovery
Congrats on your early retirement and gorgeous dream home! Good luck with the surgery!
Was going to say that Loop would made a suitable ride-on railway.
Hope this would make a great layout for later so i dont regret it
Congrats Jim on your retirement! I love your positive spirit.
Thx for everything; Good Luck! (And nice house!)
Get well soon man I hear this stuff is pretty bad and I hope to see the new house model train videos!
i chronic wrist tendentious and Ulnar nerve entrapment in my elbows. Damage from my construction and tile setting days. i just have to live with it because i cant afford surgeries. i just sleep with the braces on some nights. Hope you get very good results from the surgeries.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
Happy retirement animes I get it done now instead of waiting and you could try to use your left hand your left hand can do editing you’ll be surprise when you left hand can do unless your left hand is in pain, happy retirement what a wonderful move can’t wait to see the next video! Have you done a video on how you feel about cruises now?
Almost exactly the same with me. I just opted to have both wrists done at the same time. Anyone reading this the surgery outcome was amazing so don't put it off.
Wasn't that awkward to have them both done at the same time? Because I imagine that when you are recovering from the surgery, you have very limited use of the hand, for at least a while. By having just one done, you can always use the other one to do what you need to do. But if you have them both done at the same time, what happens if you need to button your shirt, or unzip your pants, or open a pill bottle? Sure, I guess you could ask your spouse to help, but that's going to get old very fast. And then there's certain things, like during the use of a toilet, that you're just not going to want to ask anyone else to help you with, not even your spouse. So that's why I thought doing just one at a time made a lot more sense.
@@JimZim The short answer is yes you are right on every count! I did it pre-retirement so being out of commission twice would have been a hardship on our income. And obviously, I absolutely needed my wife's full commitment to the decision I was making.
I use to fly into Tri-Cities Airport for my job and the area is so much better (weather-wise) than Seattle. Very nice area. I was once on a project in Seattle in January and it rained every day for 30 days straight. Being a so-cal guy that was a stressful month!
You have been missed however, I’m happy to know that you will be producing more presentations in the future. Any idea as to the timing of your next cruise? We’ll keep you in our prayers as you undergo surgery and then recovery. Keep smiling!
The next one I have scheduled is the last week of February 2021 on Carnival Mardi Gras. Whether the Mardi Gras will be ready in time is the big question, though! I'd say there's a 50-50 chance of cancellation.
Well life certainly has a way of throwing us curve balls. The company I have worked for over 25 years offered a buyout due to all the nonsense going on.. Long story short I'm right behind you Jim with Oct 2. Retirement . With 2 cruises we planned canceled this year we are just reevaluating which way to turn next. Hang in there. 👷♂️
Hope you have a nice retirement, also hope you recover soon!
Hope your surgeries work out well for you 🍀🍀🍀🛳🙏🏻
amazing mate
You could also Railfan here since the UP/BNSF Maineline's are no more then 15 mile's away
U should do the voice for trailer movies Jim!
" in a world of pandemic one man must survive using his 👐 hands"....aw!
My brother just moved to San Luis Obispo! Interesting to hear that you're leaving to move up north to Washington.
I just really want to see your model trains at your new house because I love your trains
Recovery express coming through next stop where ever Jim zim is
Awesome ! :) 🏡
You should check out the california state railroad museum in sacramento there are plenty of model trains there including g scale
Wow how nice.
Jim, know you love pools. Surprised you did not put one in.
No, actually my preference is a good hot tub, which we will definitely have at the new house.
May god bless and heal you.
hope you get better :..(
Good luck on the surgeries 👍👍❤️❤️🙏🏻
Hi Jim. Best of luck with the surgery/move/surgery. Looking forward to the next video. BTW: Why not use a removals company that will pack for you? You and your good lady wife can supervise.
Best wishes.
I too have carpal tunnel. No fun at all. Be well.
Haha, can we buy the old house? And i hope you go through the surgery well!
Good Luck
Good luck
How are you enjoying your retirement, Jim?
cool videos man, is that a stone wall for a fence?
I loved your videos on Anthem of the Seas. As a result, I booked a cruise on Anthem in April hoping it would motivate me to work harder while waiting. I was so excited about it! Unfortunately, our cruise got cancelled! Then, my cruising friend lost his place to live. Now, my friend is living here for the time being. I decided to get a hot tub with my cruise refund! It may be a very long time before I plan to travel again. I hope to cruise again one day but who knows! I can't wait to get my new hot tub! Are you getting one for your new beautiful home?
It's funny that you mention the hot tub thing. When we were in Washington last week, we stopped by a hot tub store to find out what we needed to know in advance of a planned hot tub purchase this September. They told me that they're selling an incredible number of hot tubs right now because everyone has cancelled their vacation plans and is instead spending that money on turning their homes and yards in to a vacation-like destination.
@@JimZim You got that right. I have to wait until October to get mine. I kinda suspected you would get one after seeing you enjoying them on your cruises (MSC).
Yes, absolutely! On every cruise that we've been on, spending time in a hot tub was always an important part. We even spend $1600 per night for a cruise on Norwegian Pearl, just to have our own private hot tub on the balcony of the owner's suite.
At our home in California, water has always been too scarce and too expensive... so owning a hot tub was out. But having one in retirement has always been part of the dream!
@@JimZim Very nice! Maybe we will see your future hot tub in one of your videos!
Oh yes, I can guarantee that!
The path at the new house looks awesome. Are those corners R1 or R3 radii? 😜 Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Definitely not R1, that's for sure! I guess the first time I lay tracks down on that path I'll find out if I should have paid for attention to the dimensions of the curves in the cement path.
@@JimZim I have a ho scale train set but my silver moon express steam locomotive has plastic Sid rods that broke and is doesn't move with out the side rods do you have any suggestions to make my own side rods
Is the neighborhood in the flood plain? Congrats on retirement
That is a very important consideration in a housing development so close to a large river. In this case, there is a large dam about 40 miles up the river from us. So, the only plausible scenario that could lead to a flood at our house would be a breach of the dam. That seems extremely unlikely to me.
Does the train down to San Diego go past that power station? It looks familiar.
That's a different nuclear power plant down there by San Diego. California actually had several nuclear power plants for a while. The one I worked at is up in San Luis Obispo county. It's the last operating nuclear power plant in the state. It's only visible from the air or from sea. There are no public roads or train tracks that go by it. The one you're think of is not only right next to the train tracks near San Onofre, but also right next to the Interstate freeway.
