      I completely agree! I learn about how regular families are living in a big urban centre with bikes. I also feel like I'm getting to know NYC a little better by watching these on-the-road cargo-bike trips.

    I made the mistake of claiming the right of way with a truck - he was at a stop sign trying to turn right- i was on the sidewalk on an adult trike going straight across without a stop signal of any kind. He was crowding me all the way across while his 'co-pilot' leered at me. Please keep making your videos - they renew my riding spirit, which at my age needs serious support.

    I think these rolling interviews, as you called it, are a great idea. I don’t think you need a car in NYC. I worked there for a while back in the 90s and I loved it, but you don’t need a car and a bicycle or an e-bike is so much better. NYC does have a unique energy as you say, it is unlike any other US city. I’m in Brighton, south of London. I lived in London for many years actually. You don’t need a car in London or Brighton as the public transport is good enough.

    Very nice episode. Thr running dialog/discussion was great! I'm glad to see the ebike passion is spreading. I'm a recent convert, and find the ebilke is great for keeping us 'older' folks active. I've got a compact Tern and use it while RVing. It's great for exploring parks and neighborhoods, and running to laundromats and grocery stores. Fewer car trips is a good thing on several fronts.

      @@Koen030NL I use my ebike for commuting. I got to ride uphill in the morning, which would not work with a normal bike. I mean I can get up the hill, but I don’t have a shower at work, so that’s no option if I have to meet with clients or coworkers. Without the ebike my only other option is my car.

But more importantly because of being on the bike the interaction she has with the community around her. I have a mid-tail cargo bike on order for me and my daughter. I am way out of practice (like decades) so I have been using Citi Bike to brush up on my skills. The first time, I fell twice and crashed into my son's bike once. The second time I was scared to start but did a lot better. I was feeling discouraged, especially watching a video of someone so confidently riding with a child on the street, which I can't imagine, but then you mentioned falling and needing practice and it made me feel better. :) I just wish Citi Bike covered my neighborhood. I have to take a train to practice biking.

    great video of how family city biking can be done. I live in Calgary, Ab. I have owned an electric conversion to a mountian bike to be able to tow a trailer to get my son to day care and to get groceries. That set up did not work well in deep snow or either the lithium battery would die or the tires on the trailer would go flat. I then bought a masden bike with a rear bucket. It did not like snow either so when my son was in grade 1, I bought a Yuba Mondo cargo bike and that has been my sole transportation since for twelve years. Yes sometimes it was difficult to pack my son in when it was minus 25 and be able to get him to day care but not having the expense of a car has allowed me to live comfortably on one income.

    Quick idea storming session, so with the new mass numbers of people from using bikes and things for their daily life, I’m beginning to realise the great idea of having a utilising tool like a cargo bike or ebike readily available.
    The convenience of having it as soon as it’s needed, with very humanitarian immersing ways of getting to places is noticeably better for the local environment and communities.
    So here’s my idea: setup a similar thing to Cargoroo Public Hire cargobikes, which operate on the same bike that the Novich family uses in this video, to be setup at somewhere like the Moynihan Train Hall or outside of a major train station.
    The best thing with these ridecasts is that the spontaneous interaction provides for amazing advocating - that much that when organised into a playlist to give to a potential audience, they’re great at persuading people to think about how we can revolutionise our lives.
    (bare in mind I don’t live in the states, I live the other side of the Atlantic, so the logistics of me being involved directly with the installation of this would not be feasible, However would still be awesome to do)

      In LA traffic, I think a biker’s lifespan would be measured in minutes. I used to live in northern California, 50 years ago. Today, if I owned Hell and LA, I’d live in Hell and rent out LA.

    • @Propelbikes
      @Propelbikes  3 года назад +9

      I think there are two primary reasons, culture and infrastructure. The love affair with the car started in LA and so did the highways. I think SoCal is beginning to learn that might have given up a good thing when they tore up their renowned bike lanes and got rid of the street cars. It’s not easy to come back from that. It seems that there is definitely a dissenting group favoring the bike and it’s growing all the time. It’s gotten a big shot in the arm and I’m optimistic it will hold.

      @@jackvoss175 Well, San Diego traffic is almost as bad in some parts. There's still no excuse for not biking other than the California mentality that everyone must travel while wearing sunglasses and sit behind the wheel of a humungous SUV or get out.

      My wife and I lived in LA for 2 years and we biked everywhere. I rode from Koreatown to Venice Beach 3 times a week. We never did buy a car.

      I think zoning and sprawling might have a lot to do with that. Utilitarian cycling is more attractive if you have nearby places to go, like shops or schools etc.

    I totally enjoy these conversational riding videos. Definitely do more of them. Need more cameras though; front, side, low to the ground near the wheel. Get 10 GoPros and clamp those puppies everywhere! (My apologies to the video editor)

    I like these ride chat videos. Its amazing how safe New York looks to bike in. I live in a city of 200k people and the drivers scare the heck out of me, theyre rude, ignorant and dont share the road. The few bike lanes we have are mostly parking lots infront of a house 🤦

    I got my bike less than a week ago. Six seconds into my first ride, I bonked off a brick beam at 2 mph. I rode to a doctor yesterday and got a little too much acceleration down a hill and showed up to my appt with a fresh raspberry on my elbow. Having a lot of fun otherwise lol.
    Wish we had bike rooms in my part of the country, but cars are king here in the suburbs. We're lucky to have a bike rack every 10th store, and even then it's only for one bike.

    'Love this!!! Thanks!
    'Very cool mom!
    "Utilitarian Biking" is what a friend calls it, and that terminology resonates well with me too.
    Would like to see the daughter's helmet on a little straighter / more-securely... 'challenging, i know... 'must be some better way(s) to accomplish that(?).
    I don't have a kid, but my (former) Malamute used to go everywhere with me in her trailer / chariot. She often wore goggles, but not a helmet ... except maybe once, and mostly just for the photo op'.

    Love this style of video and how we can also see NY. I just started cycling to work last week and the first time I cycled on a main road was scary!
    On a different note, would you consider doing a video about riding in bad weather, especially rain? And what about mirrors on bikes? Do you like/dislike them?

    You just see endless rows and rows of parked cars taking up huge amounts of space. I'd bet if they were all removed there would be miles of extra space.

    • @wintrymix
      @wintrymix 3 года назад +1

      Right, it's so frustrating how drivers think they own the road and act so inconvenienced by a little bike here and there. Dude, bikes take up so much less space when in use AND all the more so when not in use. Why do drivers feel entitled to take up so much space and begrudge bikers from taking up almost no space at all?
