My Dad used to be a bus driver and he would often do the Clifton Hill to Elsternwick or the Clifton Hill to Heidelberg/Latrobe Uni. There is a building at timestamp 3:06 on the left that is cream brick and looks like it has two lighter cream coloured circles above two garage doors. That was part of the Clifton Hill Terminus where bus drivers and tram drivers could go in and have lunch in the tea room. The building I just mentioned was not the actual tea room, it is the building to the left of it that is separated from the cream one by a private driveway. Not sure what the buildings are now but they used to be specifically for the bus and tram drivers. The bus routes for Elsternwick and Latrobe Uni/Heidelberg used to operate out of the North Fitzroy Bus Depot. I think it just has trams out of it there now. Thank-you for showing this. I used to go to work with my Dad and ride the bus with him while he drove and it has brought back a lot of happy memories seeing the Clifton Hill Terminus.
Back in 1984 on the North side of Queens Parade Fitzroy there was a Radio Comms shop called Crazy Charlies. My girlfriend from the CB radio lived just north of Queens Pde. Looks nothing like it did then.
As for tram and bus interchange, Vermont South is also another good example, tram route 75 tram terminates there and the bus stops for bus route 732 (Box Hill to Upper Ferntree Gully) are located in the middle close to the tram stop.
Another cool thing about Clifton Hill is that just south of the station (on the up end) is one of only a couple of level crossings left to still have Barker Technic e-bells (that being Ramsden St), although who knows for how much longer as most of them have been replaced at other crossings.
Very interesting video. Glad you highlighted the architecture of CH station and to know that it has been so well preserved. In my younger days I used the station in a daily basis. I am also love to see the prevalence of public buildings in Melbourne - rail stations, schools, post offices etc - of which CH station is a great example, with the red brick and yellow (sometimes white) rendering. I have never seen them anywhere else, although it is a long time since I have been to other Australian cities. But on my visits back to Melbourne they are a joy to behold.
I personally find this interchange pretty terrible, and try and avoid interchanging between the tram and train here. not the safest and most comfortable feeling walk (and i'm a guy). An upgrade of the interchange path and the wayfinding is needed imo.. but still an interesting and important location! Also the tram interchange would benefit greatly from level boarding!
@@marclikespigeons8240 actually it's better to interchange at Westgarth station to get the tram than doing it in Clifton Hill (if you are at the Hursbridge line)
Sadly the station is the site of one the mass shootings( killings) in Melbourne's history , the Hoddle Street Massacre. When I worked for the Victorian Railways I worked at this station a few times, brings back some good memories.
Great Video, brought back many memories of my teenage years living in near by suburb an going to school
Glad to hear and thank you!

Interesting as always, thanks Phil
I lived here for a bit. Thanks for making this video!

Agreed, but when the East West link gets green lighted in 20 years it’ll go the way of the dodo.🥺

How busy is the Ramsden St level crossing right now? How should the removal of such a level crossing be carried out?
Great video! Enjoyed this a lot.
Great video Philip! Funnily enough I live across the road from the station on John St.
