Bro what? Gobert has been getting his “flowers” for years as a defender and it shows in his bank account. The criticism he faced was warranted but this year he has the best defenders around him he’s ever had and he’s still taken a leap to get out on the perimeter. The combination of him not playing drop all game as well as having defenders and a coach that don’t rely solely on him as a back line giving up free runs is big for him. It’s too bad that Gobert will probably be on the decline when Ant and Jaden start to reach their prime.
BIG Rudy Gobert! My favorite player in the league. Thank you Timberwolves fans for loving him, defending him and taking good care of him. So glad to see a lot of NBA fans finally coming around on Rudy and his peers are giving him his flowers.

i think that obviously the casual NBA fan will never understand how insanely impressive long stretches of shut down team defense is, simply because its much easier to put a block or a steal in a short social media video that reaches millions then multiple consecutive defensive possessions. but fans who actually watch the games, and love the game of basketball, understand how beautiful a defensive possession like JJ described is, and get just as pumped for stretches of defensive dominance as they do for any highlight dunk, block or ankle-breaker

That's the big thing Gilbert Arenas will never understand with euro guys: in any sports here there's no star system, when you're a kid you start in academies then in pro leagues as a rookie at age 14,15,16 as Wemby or Dominique Malonga (the next Alien girl in WNBA). I've seen this in every sports i'm been doing, be it volley-ball, football (the real one), tennis fencing or table tennis whatever, at an early age I was facing grown up adults, so you have to compensate for the physical aspect with your IQ. So you learn fundamentals, I mean you learn them A LOT, and the first thing is defense in team sports here, that's why the euro guys knows everything about defense before coming in the NBA. I'm french so you know it's not a secret. Football: 2 times world champion with the best defense in each of both tournaments Handball: multiple olympics and world champion with the best goalie elected in those tournaments Thierry Omeyer Volleyball: Olympic Champion with the world's best libero, Jenia Grebennikov Basketball: Tokyo's Olympics silver medal, best defense of the tournament with Gobert and Batum. And now with Wembanyama, who was a football goalie first before basket ball, and defends on small guys at work outs ! And the NBA knows it, that's why you've got 3 frenchmen and other euro boys in the next draft, because every GM is now fed up with poor defense taught in the AAU and the NCAA. The last World Cup was a big problem for team USA: they lost because of a poor defense. The GMs are fed up with those 120+ points taken 4 times a week ! so they want defense ready guys.
Great interview 💯 Much needed for Rudy. His defensive IQ is just as good as a Draymond Green, he’s just been high-jacked by half-baked social media narratives from casuals and trash talking from his peers (just Draymond really). He’s going down as an all-time great defensive player, much like Dwight Howard, love it or hate it. These are facts.
The Draymond part is more of a hit than a compliment lol, bro is almost 4x DPOY without kicking anybody in the nuts lol. He has better def IQ than that
rudy has completely changed our team defensively, i feel like his impact just makes everyone want to play defence. There’s a reason he’s been part of top 5 defences in almost every season of his career
It’s crazy how all the blame went to Rudy when Utah’s defense fell off. They had bad defenders everywhere and Donovan doesn’t defend, so they just made Rudy’s job harder come playoff time. Just funneling guys to Rudy all series is eventually gonna wear him down and also teams will gameplan for defense that just funnel and don’t rotate. Lazy defensive plan tbh
That's the biggest difference between the Wolves and those Utah teams. If Rudy gets switched out onto the perimeter, there will always be another big (KAT, Naz, Kyle) who can rotate over and provide rim protection. It also allows Rudy to be more aggressive when he has to defend in space. He had a great block against the Wizards where he initially got beat on the perimeter, but very fluidly flipped his hips and used his length to stay attached and eventually get the block.
Wolves defense always looks like clockwork to me - a finely tuned clock - all the different pieces moving exactly how they have to in perfect sync. Beautiful to watch.
It's cool hearing Gobert talk about his main competition for DPOY. He's such a chill dude and seems separated from the hype. He's got nothing but love for the guy.
I think rudy wants wemby to be the best in the league because of how gobert has been disrespected by his peers. It'll kind be like a "yea yall ain't messing with little bro, wassup now?" kind of thing, he'll love to see wemby dominate more than anyone.
JJ gets it. Defence isn’t always sexy but watching the wolves this year - you could have made a lot of money taking the other teams under on points. Rudy is the main driver of this

for me, a GREAT perimeter defender still needed a good interior defense, and a GREAT interior defender still needed a good perimeter defense to really be effective. Defenders like Marion & Kirilenko were under appreciated and underrated because they were in a team that are between bad-good in defense.
IMO it’s the unwritten rules that are making defense harder. I also think individual efforts are only as good as a team focused effort allows. One excellent defensive player cannot carry the team and variable refereeing has everyone off balance.
You gotta have your 'Old Man & a Three' or two ... perhaps four ... 😁 ok, I'm listening now ... This should be good. He's a really great player and totally filled the spot Mini needed ... Just right fit. Ok, I'm listening ...................... Coool ... is that Minnesota in the Background? nice ... just finishing off winter I see ... Rudy can score too, certainly dunk pretty well ... and offensive boards are not uncommon for him ...
no lol, Bam/AD are better than him. On top of Jokic and Embiid. Hes probably up there with Lopez or Nurk. Offensively Rudy has issues. Also guys like Sengun, Sabonis i would say are also better. Its not so cut and dry
@CamPerry His defense has made the Timberwolves the #1 defense all year, and it wasn't even close. Or are you only a stat guy? And before you say the Timberwolves have the best guard defenders too and that's why Wolves have best defense .. don't forget Utah was 3x best defense and those guards were slow and horrible at defense. That's how much Rudy impacts winning.
The wildest thing about this pod is JJ saying the draft has to be specific things and then drafts the whole city of Paris… bro could’ve at least said the Eiffel Tower
Wemby has by far the biggest individual impact on defense of any defender in this league and its not even close. The only question is if that is the criteria for DPOY.. and it should be.
First, I love Wemby and appreciate his game Though Rudy has been integral in creating the defensive scheme for the wolves. Isn't that an incredible individual benefit to the team ? Wemby will get the next 7 DPOY in a row. In his words : let him have it this year 😊
@@emmanuelcoquet6257 So are players like NAW or McDaniels. Its not Defensive Team Of The Year. Defensive rating on/off difference Wemby -12.0 Rudy -4.1 You can rename the award into Wemby Of The Year and you dont have to wait for next year to do that.
People think Gobert is only good a D because of his height. Not true. First of all he worked hard on his body and his a gym rat. So he’s got the work ethic. Secondly, he works on his brain. He really understands team defense coverage in an out. After his career I see him being an excellent assistant coach who can specialize on Defensive schemes and tutor the bigs
Love hearing how Rudy “took it personal” when a player was happy to get the switch. He’s been such an overrated defender because of them Utah playoff series and last year. He is an AMAZING defender and it’s good to hear how much he took it to improve his game and prove everyone wrong. He was the only good defender on the jazz it’s not his fault he didn’t get any help. Now on the wolves we can see how with competent defenders around him they are damn near unbeatable.
People that fight the idea of Rudy winning DPOY have probably watched two Wolves games all year. Ask any fan in MN and they will say he’s the MVP of the team this season. This defense isn’t half as good without him covering the paint and communicating where to be with all of his teammates.
One could make a similar argument for Wemby, tho. If you fight the idea of Wemby being DPOY then you probably aren’t scrutinizing his individual contributions, writing him off based upon team record. With Wemby on the floor, Spurs have a top 5 defense. Without him they are dead last in NBA. Gobert is the best defender out of all the BEST teams in the league. True. Wemby is the best defender in the NBA, period.
Nah I’m a spurs fan and rudys always been the best big man defender in the league. Now he’s got the defensive talent around him he’s shining even more, hope they win a chip this year! Obv I’d love Victor to win it cos he equally deserves it imo but the media won’t vote because of the teams win/loss
@@skoolynugenator1802 Wemby is averaging more blocks as a rookie, than Rudy his whole carrer. Wemby had Joker bring his A game playing one of the worst teams in the league. When he plays Rudy, he drops 40 on his head with ease. Brother, I have 47....

@@luigidabest4743 but he’ll be in rotation a lot mid game for sure
@@KyoshiHonor yeah he's gonna come in for gobert and then move wemby to the 5 for better rim protection while sarr can lock down on the perimeter
Go Rudy!!! Next 4 times DPOY, NBA Champion and Olympic Games Gold medalist. 😁
He’s gonna get his US citizenship?
@@imccormick0311 He is not Embiid. 🇨🇵😁
don't jinx France for this summer.
Wemby and Rudy are gonna go crazy at the olympics
I wish you guys would've pushed Gobert on his response when he mentioned rule changes making defense hard
IMO it’s the unwritten rules that are making defense harder. I also think individual efforts are only as good as a team focused effort allows. One excellent defensive player cannot carry the team and variable refereeing has everyone off balance.
Which unwritten rules?@@catherinelynnfraser2001
I think JJ disagrees with that, it's just that are so many talented offensive players.
You gotta have your 'Old Man & a Three' or two ... perhaps four ... 😁
ok, I'm listening now ...
So many huge pauses while talking for Rudy, I thought it was lagging 😂😭
gobert has been the 3rd best center in the league for a while now
Love Rudy but he's not better than Bam imo
no lol, Bam/AD are better than him. On top of Jokic and Embiid. Hes probably up there with Lopez or Nurk. Offensively Rudy has issues. Also guys like Sengun, Sabonis i would say are also better. Its not so cut and dry
@@dorian6452 wrong
Lots of Rudy hate in here. Personally, I think he's underrated.
Don’t even think its hate he just hasn’t been the best defensive player this year
@CamPerry His defense has made the Timberwolves the #1 defense all year, and it wasn't even close.
Or are you only a stat guy? And before you say the Timberwolves have the best guard defenders too and that's why Wolves have best defense .. don't forget Utah was 3x best defense and those guards were slow and horrible at defense. That's how much Rudy impacts winning.
nope he plays with two good defensive wings he's overrated
@@weights250 i think both things can be true. McDaniels is easily one of the best perimeter defenders, if not the best.
The wildest thing about this pod is JJ saying the draft has to be specific things and then drafts the whole city of Paris… bro could’ve at least said the Eiffel Tower
You are 1A and Draymond is 1B in terms of the best RUclips podcast.
Hella media training before this interview.
Updated MVP ladder: 1. Jokic 2. SGA 3. Luka. Reason stated why Luka dropped despite producing more than SGA: He plays alongside a future HOF.
That draft 💀😂🥲 “filet mignon, Mbappe”
Wemby has by far the biggest individual impact on defense of any defender in this league and its not even close.
The only question is if that is the criteria for DPOY.. and it should be.
First, I love Wemby and appreciate his game
Though Rudy has been integral in creating the defensive scheme for the wolves.
Isn't that an incredible individual benefit to the team ?
Wemby will get the next 7 DPOY in a row. In his words : let him have it this year 😊
@@emmanuelcoquet6257 So are players like NAW or McDaniels. Its not Defensive Team Of The Year.
Defensive rating on/off difference
Wemby -12.0
Rudy -4.1
You can rename the award into Wemby Of The Year and you dont have to wait for next year to do that.
@jj you should bring JJ Barea to podcast.
get a jazz player on the pod next week since they have no post season
Don’t understand why people dislike gobert so much
People think Gobert is only good a D because of his height.
How many games of the other contenders did you watch?
Nah I’m a spurs fan and rudys always been the best big man defender in the league. Now he’s got the defensive talent around him he’s shining even more, hope they win a chip this year!
Obv I’d love Victor to win it cos he equally deserves it imo but the media won’t vote because of the teams win/loss
@@jublacabra Spurs have won 20 games. Get out of here with that nonsense. Would you consider someone on a trash team for MVP?
@@skoolynugenator1802 Wemby is averaging more blocks as a rookie, than Rudy his whole carrer. Wemby had Joker bring his A game playing one of the worst teams in the league. When he plays Rudy, he drops 40 on his head with ease. Brother, I have 47....
is there a Jokic portion? Let me know, will get back. Thanks!
No, but fortunately they got the greatest defensive big man of all time
At minute 35 did rudy say point guard?
🔥🔥🔥
from the worst trade of all time talks to this, gobert's come back was amazing this year, how they left him off in the draft! :(
Rudy we say Chocolatine, voyons no one says Pain au chocolat!
Mais qu’est ce tu racontes y’a limite qu’une région en France qui dis chocolatine et c’était pour les anglais on disait Chocolat in it
