  • This week we are thrilled to welcome two fantastic guests to The Old Man and the Three: Coach of the Year runner-up and Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley and Minnesota Timberwolves’ Sixth Man of the Year Naz Reid. JJ and Tommy open the episode discussing the Wolves defense in their second round series against the Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and the Denver Nuggets. Then, Jamahl joins for an extremely insightful conversation about NBA coaching and shares what he learned about coaching stars from his time with Carmelo Anthony and Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks) and how stars see the game. He also talks about what stands out about Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs, and Jonathan Isaac. He then takes us through what if takes every day to build great culture in an organization, what goes into game preparation, how to construct a standout NBA defense, and much more. Then, Naz joins to share what his NBA journey has been like, what it’s like being teammates with Anthony Edwards, and how Rudy Gobert, Jaden McDaniels, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker have taught the Wolves to love playing defense. He also shares his approach to coming off the bench and his mindset that led to his Sixth Man of the Year season. Naz, JJ, and Tommy finish off the episode by drafting beach accessories.
    Subscribe to The Old Man and The Three podcast w/ JJ Redick (ESPN / First Take) and Tommy Alter RUclips channel today for more NBA analysis, player interviews and highlights.

    I'm probably not alone in understanding that JJ is giving us a graduate course in how basketball is played with brilliant conversations such as this one with Jamahl Mosley. I've long been a fan but have never fully appreciated the complexity of the game. JJ puts talking heads to shame... every one of them. We are so blessed in this day and age that we're hearing accomplished basketball players talk about the game, not as entertainment but simply because they love what they've been doing their whole lives. I will listen ALL day long to JJ, and Tim Legler. For comic relief I'll add Richard Jefferson to the group. But JJ really leads the way in this new form of sports journalism. We don't need a busty babe or a loud mouth for the experience to be enjoyable.

      I honestly thought I knew basketball, just minus the terminology. I now realize there is way more happening on the court than I initially thought. It makes the game even more interesting

    • @Oldasianguy
      @Oldasianguy 21 день назад +2

      It showed me just how much about basketball I do know. There's a few terms that are new to me, but the actions are all the same. And we run stuff like this playing pick up ball. It separates from the basketball players on the court from the people just playing basketball.

    The Magic did well this seas ... but, how well could they have been with 1) Anthony Black at pt G the full seas -- Paolo and Franz were acting pt forwards; they brought the ball up more than Suggs who is a shooting G, not a pt G, and 2) without a true starting center. Carter is not. Imagine, no center and no pt guard. I don't understand that. The stretch where true pt guard Anthony Black was pt G was their best stretch of games this season.
    When Paolo and Franz brought ball up court, by the time they touched it the second time the shot clock was deep in the red. Thus, shots were forced. Paolo and Franz were Never given the chance to move much without the ball with good time on the shot clock. Paolo's high number of turnovers late in seas and in playoffs due to Over Dribbling, brought on in most part by being forced to play point forward. The lack of these two getting lobs-jams due to not moving without the ball. The talent these two have was greatly restricted by Over Dribbling due in large part by being point forwards. Ridiculous.

    I thought lakers defense was ahead with Dwight and javale and their length, getting rid of them was the worst move, however i think they tried replicating that with wood and Vanderbilt but they were both injured…they would’ve beat the nuggets with those two healthy and lakers wolves would’ve been a better series

    Minnesota had great defense all season long, no question. But, the defense they are playing as of today, started in game one of Denver series. If they played like that even in the Pheonix series, they would not have been underdogs at the beginning of the Denver series. Let's not forget this same team lost twice to Phoenix and once to Denver for their last 3 losses of the season. Now they are the best defensive team of all time, and obviously MJ will be pulled in the conversation at some point. The reality is, "you can do it too", meaning every team still alive in the playoffs. Where you at stat boy. I know you want to tell me i'm wrong
