Dangerously Close! F-4 Phantoms - Air support in the Vietnam War. Close air support (CAS) -- sometimes called tactical air support -- gave American and South Vietnamese ground forces a massive military advantage. However, the U.S. Air Force had to relearn tactics used during World War II and the Korean War. The challenge was to provide effective support with high-speed combat jets, and to control many airstrikes over a small area. After all, the "close" in close air support really indicated striking the enemy dangerously close to their own troops!
