      I think a strong visual influence of German gasmask storage cylinder is also a good candidate for why they have them. Stormtroopers are very clearly partially based on WW1/WW2 German soldiers. Because they wanted to make it clear to the audience that The Empire was an authoritarian state, and having German influence in the kit conveys that well without telling.

      I mean, it makes sense! Stormtroopers were supposed to be the elite of the elite for Imperial ground troops, simultaneously navy seals and army rangers, they had the best kit, the best training and the best reputation. The very sight of a Stormtrooper was supposed to illicit fear in the average being, and their lethality was well known, even Obi-Wan notes this in ANH: "Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise."
      So them having an amazing set of armour simply makes sense.

    • @jarongreen5480
      @jarongreen5480 9 месяцев назад +4

      Honestly from the start it's always seemed pretty useless. First film they instantly remark that you "can't see a thing in the helmet" I always thought it'd be neat if it acted something like a ceramic bullet proof vest. It can take two or three hits before the protective plate is shattered and the next shot can go through.

    • @Dwarfman01
      @Dwarfman01 9 месяцев назад +17

      @@jarongreen5480 So in the RPGs, Stormtrooper armour was coded to each user. The helmets themselves contained all sorts sensory equipment - like what Loyd mentioned in the video. If your DNA didn't match up with the person the armour was designated to, nothing worked.
      You also required training to use the armour properly, otherwise the armour was hard to move in.

    • @CarrowMind
      @CarrowMind 9 месяцев назад

      The movies did them dirty, make no mistake. They were meant to be the cannon fodder the heroes mowed through, but in Legends it's a different story. The common theory goes that Vader ordered the garrison aboard the Death Star to suck on purpose, since the entire plan hinged on the Falcon escaping and leading them to the Rebel base.
      Yet the subsequent movies seemed to gloss over that fact and continue treating the troopers like a joke, culminating with the final nail on the coffin that was ROTJ and the Ewoks. Legends Troopers would have slaughtered the Ewoks without breaking a sweat, yet what we get is an entirely different story, hence all the jokes and the reputation that Stormtroopers were bumbling idiots wearing shitty armour with terrible aim.@@jarongreen5480

      @Maeyanie 9 месяцев назад +12

      I've always liked that theory too. We don't generally know the stormtroopers are actually _dead_ after being hit by a blaster (or some teddy bears with rocks), just that they're out of action, so it's completely reasonable that the armour has saved their life and they'll be fine after a bacta bath.

Once in the suit they just moved and walked normally. And the suit which encased them wasn't all that much bigger than the man inside. All attempts to show the armor so far have used a giant exo=skeleton with the man in a small cockpit.

    • @mirsh2541
      @mirsh2541 9 месяцев назад +8

      It's pretty funny sometimes since the original costumes were somewhat haphazardly put together to last just long enough for filming and in some scenes it's already falling apart on screen if you look closely. And then some people are obsessed with recreating exactly what was seen on screen instead of what the costumes were meant to be or convey, which doesn't necessarily go together with wanting a costume you can actually wear somewhat comfortably and which will last you for decades worth of conventions.
      It's also "screen accurate" to be missing certain details on the helmet and have your armour held together by white tape...

    • @Riceball01
      @Riceball01 9 месяцев назад +7

      I agree. While I'm big into costuming, I feel that the term screen accurate is misused. What many fans call screen accurate should really be called set accurate and refer to being accurate to the prop or costume as seen on set/in person and includes all of the flaws. Screen accurate should refer to how it appears on screen under studio lighting, film color correction, and how you're supposed to see it.
      I definitely with Lloyd in preferring my Stormtrooper and Vader helmets to be perfectly symmetrical as they would be in universe. They would have almost certainly designed in the Star Wars equivalent of CAD and produced on sophisticated machines so there's no reason why they wouldn't be perfectly symmetrical.

    On the subject of how studio lighting and later color correction can affect things, the pulse riles in Aliens are a good example of how things can appear differently in person from how they appear on screen. On screen, the plastic body work on the pulse rifles appear to be a sort of olive drab color, but in person they were more of a brown color since they were painted in color called Brown Bess. Many Aliens costumers obsess over this detail and paint their replica pulse rifles in this Brown Bess color even though that's not how they appear on screen yet they'll insist that it's screen accurate.
    Another example of something appearing different in person from on screen are the yellow/gold shirts worn by some of the cast members of the original Star Trek. That gold mustard color was actually much more green in color in person but due to the way the material catches and reflects light, along with the studio lighting and color correction, they don't look particularly green. Oddly enough, despite that, many TOS Trek costumers go with true screen accuracy and wear gold/mustard shirts instead of something that's more green.

    the screen accuracy vs production accuracy thing, the vision vs the nitty gritty detail, thats a pretty interesting rabbithole, how different doctrines on the same thing can lead to completely different lines of thought and desires.
    kind of reminds me about the mantainance vs refurbish schools of thought for historical items. to restore them to a certain historical standard to give an impression of the period, or to keep the centuries of rotting in some attic on them for the purpose of greatest authenticity.

    A while ago I read that clone armor dissipates the energy from the blast, but the energy still hits the wearer and the force often knocks them out. Seems like justification after the fact, but I was able to accept that well enough for why every clone/stormtrooper dead drops when hit

    The overall design intentions of the armor was discussed in a few of the SW books that may or may not still be canon. I remember a discussion that covered the deliberate shift in design goals between the armor made for the clones and the armor made for storm troopers.
    Clone armor, apparently, was made to attempt to completely arrest the passage of energy when contacted by it, and its ability to do this was, of course, limited to a threshold of let's say 10 units. 9 or less practically wouldn't even be felt through the armor, but 10 or above would cause a local failure at the point of contact and the energy would pass through that failure, leading to a very definite (and very possibly fatal) wounding of the wearer. The recovery chain then begins: immediate aid, medevac, surgery, recouperation, physical therapy if needed. A very long and resource hungry process during which the valuable asset of that fighter is also lost to the commanders in the field, and which process is fairly likely to fail to ever return them to the line.
    Trooper armor, on the other hand, was made to dissipate incoming energy rather than blocking it outright. Say that this more manageable job than an absolute stoppage raises its failure threshold to 15, 15+ will still fail and get you a wounded trooper, chain of recovery, etc. just as before. But everything 14 and below will still pass through to the wearer, only spread over their whole body and hopefully watered down to a generalized 2-4. Enough in the higher doses to render the wearer unconscious, but little enough that the wounding potential (below failure) is essentially eliminated. If the trooper is recovered, they're right back to duty with absolutely minimal time or resources expended. Assuming the forces of the Empire are sufficient to press on over momentary losses within a given battle to eventually win on the day, they could easily be back up to almost full strength by the next engagement.
    I recognize and am also frustrated by the lack of address given to simple melee vulnerability, but that seems to be much more a movie than a book thing, best I can remember. I do not claim this as gospel or canon, it's just the understanding I took from a non-movie source I read some years ago, and no, I cannot remember which one.

    I always viewed the storm trooper armour as a streamlined space suit.
    It's supposed to protect the storm troopers during boarding actions in space, in case defenders on a rebel vessel decide to try and vent the atmosphere of the sections and decks where the storm troopers enter.
    Not necessarily to fulfill the function of body armour.

    • @Dack.howaboutyou

      Hmm yeah i think the black-body-glove combined with the potentially air-tight-helmet-seal could provide (with that back-tube-storage perhaps contributing extra) that emergency pressure-suit function. Seems perfectly plausible they would have that sort of gear around to swap into depending on where they were about to be deployed. Star Destroyers like in that first scene, are really big and carry a LOT of people & gear too. :)

      @@Dack.howaboutyou I'm pretty sure George Lucas had space suits in mind, considering the time Star Wars was made (when the moon landing and NASA were all the rage), along with the colouration on them, and the very first scene they make an appearance showcasw a situation where it might be a good idea to have a space suit with it's own oxygen supply too

    Nice. I'm currently in the middle of building my own as well. I went with an RS kit. Good quality, but I had to modify some of the pieces to make them fit my body type (I'm apparently taller than a 1970 stuntman as well). If you have to make modifications, I suggest you mix up some "ABS paste", which is essentially just pieces of ABS that you melt with aceton. The resulting paste can be used to fill gaps in your armor and can be sanded. The stuff is extremely helpful.

    The *potential* tech of the armor could be so epic if Stormtroopers weren't the Keystone Kops of science fiction, defeated by teddy bears and completely unable to shoot straight.
    Though I guess Mandalorians fulfill that "epic" role, with their Swiss Army Knife armor.
    Outstanding, sir, you never disappoint. 🍻

    Small nerdy point of order.
    Ablative armour doesn't necessarily need to be 'stiff' as it works by 'ablating' (To remove by erosion, melting, evaporation, or vaporization) in order to carry incoming energy away.
    As such Ablative armour could as easily be incorporated into a fabric or gel as a solid plate. Furthermore this kind of armour isn't suited to stopping impact as it's intended to dissipate heat (plasma / DEW?). Perhaps the word you were looking for was 'Carapace'?

    Seeing how Stormtroopers are most definitely partially based on WW1 German Stormtrooper and WW2 German soldiers the reason for the mysterious tube on the lower back is based on the gasmask cylinder that these troops carried. I don’t have an idea what they are used for “in universe” but from a “real world” perspective this is what i believe to be the case.
