I remember the first time I heard this man,I was probably six or seven and I asked my mother who was that, she said Donny Hathaway, THE BEST SINGER THAT EVER SANG! He captured me at that age with that heavenly voice!!! He still heals me today!!! He is missed!!
Man this brother was the best. I'm glad I grew up during this period, music of the 70's was just beautiful. Marvin Gaye, Donnie Hathaway, Al green, the Carpenters, Stevie wonder, joe cocker, the Eagles, Jackson Five, the moments, Roberta flack, Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross I could go on and on. This is what was played on Am radio.
What a blessing to have had the opportunity to slather west coast radio listeners with his music in the '70s. Soulful music like this lives on, in our memories and hopefully on radio that plays real music! It's why I got in the business 55 years ago.
Shati Shane Parks Agreed. That's a aftereffect of listening to true artistry. There are entertainers/performers and their are artists. Very few of the latter. Donnie will ever forver be amongst the great artists.
Shati Shane Parks especially when I hear this Christmas. I’m always in tears because it’s such a beautiful song and to know his tragic death it’s so conflicting to me .
Yes, Donny'voice take you on an emotional journey like no other vocalist. Yet, I think its important to remember he was also an incredible musician, a musical prodigy who made his piano sing just as soulfully as his voice.
❤❤I'm sorry you weren't sick in a time that you could've really been helped. You were blessed-we were blessed to have you for the short time we did. Hope you're in a place of no fear and much peace❤❤
Donny has that God unique exquisite voice that just captivates any audience. He may just be the best singer of all time I'm dead serious he was beyond any other before or after him
Just recently a year ago heard this name and voice and now I can't stop listening. Whatched "UNSUNG" The Donny Hathaway Story. I was overwhelmed with tears and emotions. So saddened the such a young and talented life was taken so soon. Forever remembered ❤️❤️❤️
My brothers and sisters it's 10:51 in the morning 🌄 here in Baltimore City and I'm groovin to this wonderful song 🎵 by 1 of the GREATEST SINGERS 🎶 EVER DH RIP black people 2022 let's get it together ❤
My god that drum mix in the studio.Donny is the best ever. Some of top 5 artist I’ve ever heard.Thats coming from a 44 year old bass player who loves Stoner rock and 90’s grunge .
He was the best, so soulful, yet haunting, the sound and feeling lingers with you forever. A beautiful brother who did not get the help he needed, like so many stars of that time, your spirit lingers on and we love you Donny ❤️
I had this song on a 45” disc (not this version live though). If my memory serves me correctly, “Giving Up” was on the flip side. I love both tunes. I love every entire song that I heard released by Donny. His musicians were always incredibly soulful as well. Donny was played great bass as well. I wanted to actually experience one of his “LIVE” performances. I was in Illeshiem Germany when a friend named Albert Mattei gave me the tragic news about Donny’s death. I actually had tears. I was twenty yo at the time. I was so heart-broken. Then came Lalah. And when heard her the first time and even afterwards, it raised the hairs on my body. Love this song just as much today. All versions of it. Peace. Thanks for posting.
Nevr listened to this guy before - bot WOW. I sort of got stuck on Gil Scott Heron, Bobby Womack, even quirky Marvin Gaye. I love his music. There is so great music in the world.

One of the greatest to ever step to the mic and he was hell with a pen. Too much talent in one man. Life cut short do to illness. Tragic
Real singing, no auto tunes
Soulful, melodic and pure black from around the way rooted in the joy and pain of the ghetto sound.
