I've been a Genesis fan for a *long* time. Phil Collins is a real hero. His career story is a remarkable narrative, speaking volumes on the value of perserverencre and hard work. A real self made man.
I agree.. hes a genius.. sad how he aged over night but nice that nic has taken his dads place in Genesis...I would have thought simon would have reached the top.. hes so much like his dad..
So interesting to think of all that would come in the next couple decades while watching this 29 yr old entertainer with his first solo album performing on national TV using only his voice and a piano. You would never guess he was one of rock's best drummers. A humble, talented genius.
You Know What I Mean is such an honest piece of art. He sang sweetly of something so personal and put his heart on the table for the audience to see bare. That is courage if I’ve ever seen it.
I agree with him. As an artist, some songs require such a level of emotion that it is practically impossible to do it right at a particular time scheduled in advance in front of a team of producers looking at you, expecting you to sell records and a manager looking at the clock. Now, nowadays, most of us do our recordings at home, so in a way, he was a pioneer.
I think he recorded a lot of it on 8 track at home and didn't want to try to do them again in a studio because it took so much energy out of him and doing it again wouldn't be real.
Ya slightly, it seems like theres no reverb coming back to his mix, which seems non existant besides a wedge or two possibly on the ground. Also very early in his career upfront singing also first shot at a solo run...still very shy and not conquered everything in life yet besides loss and broken heart. Well he eas just starting to come out of his shell...looks like Kenny Everetts younger brother perhaps ...ot mayhe my buddy idle nate wood...he even sounds like earlier phil thinner voice etc. Check out nate wood hes a ridiculously great version of a mdern day phil even evolved in all areas and how can i even say that out loud? ! He can play bass drums keys and sing all at the same time.... sounds silly right ?! It is but silly amazing. Yhanks phil collins
14:40 Now he's thanking how to fit the words from the first chorus into the second one.😉🤗 He always makes a piano sound great. Peter Gabriel the same too.
huh... its really interesting that he's definitely not lip syncing here, but i can def understand better why lip syncing was such a standard thing back then cause without the echo and processing on his vocal this sounds like an open mic night at the coffee shop.. albeit prolly the greatest coffee shop performance of all time 😅
I wonder if this is the very first time he actually sang it "live", with only the instrumental backing track behind....all the other television appearance around that time were lipsync,
Phil starting to take on the 80s...wow 10 years of solid historical work in several genres. ITAT is so tribal that it's barely a pop song...spare menacing and a wicked bolero build-up.
Such a beautiful interpretation of "you know what i mean" so touching and Phil Collins, what an handsome man

No echo or reverb on the mic, just dry and clean. That's crazy hard to do well, and shows how Phil was at the height of his vocal game.

He’s my favourite male singer and has been since ‘83
2022 Phil still THE BEST. From Paris, Thanks for this documentary.
I LOVE Phil Collins. . . Such a wonderful talented man.
I saw this the night it aired, back in the day. As powerful a performance now, as it was then....
Me too! I was seventeen and blown away.

I like that's he's still using his 70's backup voice style here singing you know what I mean.
And from there, one of the big 5 of the 80's and biggest recording artist of all time was born 🤟🏻
Open and honest mode Phil, slightly nervy on the vocal at the start of both songs. Good upload, thanks. First comment too, Brucie bonus.

BEAUTIFUL ‼️‼️WE LUV OUR PHIL😍🥰😍🥰
This is fantastic.
And to think in 2018-2019-2020 He sang You know What I mean, with his son playing the Piano
His passion though ❤️
Love this guy ❤️
Face Value release date was 13 Feb 1981.
I remember seeing this when it first aired.
Phil with a hired Oberheim OBX! The local keyboard shop didn't have a Prophet-5!🤪
Great vid. Strange to see Phil with such high tone on these songs. Even higher than the recordings.
Phil was 30 at the time.
In 1980 he was still only 29 years old
Great old footage! RIP Tom...you were a true original.
In 1982 Phil produced the album Something's Going On for ABBA star Anni-Frid Lyngstad which included a cover version of You Know What I Mean.
And in September '81 he performed this song at The Secret Policeman's Ball in London.

Phil is the man.
Phil Collins

Good thing someone recorded this with their VCR bc NBC probably tossed the video in the trash.
Wow, it’s really LIVE!

Apparently this was in August '81 which seems accurate to me.
March to May of 81 I remember my first time hearing it was through my 2nd husband.
I used to like Phil Collins, I still do....but I used to too..
And 40+ years later, I wonder what Phil felt coming in the air that night.
Tom Snyder was so good. Did some great interviews here (KISS/Joan Jett/Paul Weller)
This is from 1981, not from 1980.
That’s all you got?!
@@annmariesnyder5267 what more do you want? Lol
This can't be from 1980 'cos In The Air and Face Value came out in '81
January '81 so those songs were already finished well before then
August 3, 1981
Thank you.
My favourite singer Andrzej Zaucha
How does this relate to this clip?
I wonder if this is the very first time he actually sang it "live", with only the instrumental backing track behind....all the other television appearance around that time were lipsync,
Phil starting to take on the 80s...wow 10 years of solid historical work in several genres. ITAT is so tribal that it's barely a pop song...spare menacing and a wicked bolero build-up.
They would release the Genesis album “Abacab” a month after this interview aired, so Tom Snyder didn’t do his homework on Phil lol.
This is USA 1981, not 1980
😍😍😍😍
11:49 sounds like what youtubers do.
Tom Snyder clearly considered himself an extremely witty & hilarious presenter
Many agreed with him back in 1980. He had all the best on his show.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What a terrible interviewer.
The show host is a stick in the mud, he probably doesn't even own any rock albums.
Tom Snyder was one hell of a broadcaster.
