- Detailed instructions for tying a Simple Golden Stone Fly Nymph.
Hook: 3X-long nymph hook (here a Dai-Riki 285), sizes 8-16.
Bead: 7/64-inch, black.
Weight: Lead-free round wire, .020.
Thread: 8/0 or 70 Denier, yellow.
Dubbing ball: Australian possum, golden stone.
Rib: Ultra Wire, brassie size, gold.
Tails: Amber goose biots.
Back/Wingpads: pheasant tail fibers, dyed yellow.
Body: Australian possum, golden stone.

I think these simple stoneflies work just as well as the more realistic ones that might have three sets of biot legs, but do you ever encounter situations where a pats rubberlegs works just as well or better than this?

I just caught the biggest trout of my (relatively short) flyfishing experience this weekend on this pattern that I tied myself. At least in my experience, it works! Thanks for an effective fly that I can actually tie reasonably well, and for excellent instructions.

love this pattern. have been having great success with it since you posted this. I tie them in larger sizes such as 8 and 6 and use molted thin skin instead of pheasant tail and add hackle legs around the thorax.

This is one of my favorite patterns from the channel, although I have to disagree on one thing: I HATE losing these to the bottom! It is such a good looking pattern. It does flirt with that line between effectivness and tying time (is it worth the time it takes to tie?), but from my experience it's definitely worth it; and as time goes on I've become more efficient at tying them. They are also surprisingly resiliant as long as you use fly finish. Thanks!

I find that flattening the lead free before wrapping it over with the thread helps keep the thread from falling in the cracks between the wraps

It's hard not to like one of your favorite bug patterns you like to use even simpler. I do a TON with the Prince Nymph, mostly Variants since it catches me a lot of fish, but needs subtle change ups.
Your Stone is definitely, to me, an improvement from the last. (Only in terms of speed......I'll admit it looks sexy too. Lol)

I have caught a good many trout with this pattern.
try using a bobbin for your lead wires.. easier to wrap this way, and much less waste

I have been tying these up on size 12 Daiichi 1760s with a 3.2 mm gunmetal bead in black; boy do they look killer! I cannot wait to try them next year in the gorge on neversink, i know the fish there will absolutely go bonkers for this pattern! a much quicker tie than a kauffmans, and Im guessing its low profile helps get it into the zone fast. Love it

Brooktrout Angler Yes, very, very happy with it. Still getting accustomed to it doing full rotary tying but almost there. The thing is a work of art in terms of fit and finish.

Just thought i would say I bought a Dyna-King Ultimate Indexer because of your videos. So far I've been very happy with it. But now you show us a Regal Vise????? Sorry Tim. But now I'm caught between the two vises. Oh my aching pocket book. LOL. Do you like the Regal better than the Dyna-King? Don't mean to put you on the spot but I really do like the Regal.
+Danny Jett They are both absolutely awesome vises and I really can't say one is better than the other. I will say, the Ultimate Indexer holds larger hooks, i.e. saltwater like nothing else out there because of the grooved jaws and the cam clamp. But, the narrower, more pointy jaws on the Regal allow you to get your finger tips in near the back of even the smallest hooks. Life's short, get both!

I can’t find spoils of lead free wire but I really wanna tie these and not be afraid to fish them properly right by the bottom I have lead wire but I would prefer not to leave any lead in spring streams

Correct. The real reason to tie down twice is to have and lock down two smaller dubbing noodles for the thorax rather than one really large one. If you use thinner UV adhesive, the two wing pad effect does show up quite well.
Hey Tim, I know this is an old video, but just wondering if you still use Bondic? Do you recommend it?
I don't use Bondic anymore. Unfortunately I have become extremely sensitized to virtually all UV cure resins and can no longer use them for tying or even be near someone that is. UV cure resins are a tremendous tool for tying flies, just be aware that there are some pretty significant risks to using them. Be sure to read all the warning labels and follow all the safety protocols. Had I done this, I might still be able to use them.
@@tightlinevideo Oh wow, I didn't realize you developed an allergy to them over time. I did see that you had a reaction to one, but thought it was a specific ingredient that caused it. I'll take a look at the warning labels before I use them again. I have a feeling ventilation is important, which I currently don't have much of in my tying shed...

Y look more natural and more realistic movement or does it just make the fly easier to get out of the fish when you catch them cause I've tried fishing barbless and not and i have hooked up on more fish without the hook being barbless so i was wondering if you could she'd some light on this issue for me because i have only benn fly dfishing for about a year and half semi regularly amd i dabbled dabbled in it for about a year before that and only went like 2 times realy fly fishing and i used it once cheating with a worm before that so i could break it in but I have been tying for the whole time started off with out a vice or any tools so if you could answer this for me i would give my thanks P.Ś. good luck fishing

Been fishing barbless for 30 years and the only secret, if you want to call it that, is keeping tension on your fly line.
Most f the time you can release the fish without ever touching it and that's a huge plus for survival.
You have some nice vids :) where did you learn all this stuff ?
555aljaz It took about 30 years (I guess I'm a slow learner). I have also been really lucky in that I've been helped along the way by some true experts over the years. Their information and willingness to share it has been invaluable and these videos certainly would not be possible without their contributions.
Have you thought about doing a video on your fly tying bench?
Fly Fisher22 I've been asked this question a couple of times, but my tying bench is now set up way more for shooting video than it is for actual tying. It is more like a "movie set" than a regular, useful tying bench. I do keep things simple though, just a pedestal vise and a small tool caddy that holds only commonly used tools. All materials are stored in zip lock bags which are then placed in cheap stackable plastic drawers. To me, it is the storing and then quickly accessing of materials that's the key to efficient tying and I am no expert. My system baffles me sometimes and would be next to impossible for someone else to understand.
This pattern is kinda difficult (for me personally) because my eyes aren’t that good I usually tie on a size 12 or 10 as I have golden stones in my stream around 2-3 inches big as nymphs

Kim Krikau Jensen Still have the Dyna-King Ultimate Indexer but the Regal Stainless Steel Revolution and their new Travel Vise (I got it with midge jaws) were just too nice to hold off any longer. Some times changes is good, very good!
I agree, realism is nice, but I loose way to many flies to spend 20 minutes on a single fly tie.
