If you're going to put a case on anyway, how does it make glass back phone more premium? Plastic or glastic as Samsung is calling these days, is better way to go as it makes phone lighter and wayy cheaper to replace back panel even if it chips or fades. Glass back is just there to make a sale, at least for most consumers.
Not to forget the cost of the phone - I almost got Realme GT2 pro despite lack of telephoto cam but only held back due to 8 gen 1's low power efficiency. Hoping there are some non glass back 8+ gen1 phone launching soon

For me the glass back on a smartphones is the single most stupid and aggravating thing ever "invented" for smartphone. Its only purpose is to break and make you want a new phone. How can people be so stupid to want to have a phone with a smooth back? To make it easier to lose grip and drop it on the floor?

What i think, is, the glass is better, yeah, it breaks so easy even from a fall of a reduced height, but it is supposed to be like that with the purpose of absorb all the impact, cuz the important thing in a phone, is your data, the plastic is so flexible, but the impact ends in your hardware with the posibility of damage in your battery, and thats why it have aluminium too, the aluminium absorbs the big part of the impact and it lefts a hole, is more like, protect your data at exchange of visuals, and glass have wireless charge and contact transactions, share your battery, and have a bit less trouble with the heat, and thanks to the aluminium, they use to put like a liquid heat discipator in a side were u dont usually touch while gaming, and what about the water resistance?, well, i think the glass smartphones have another layer of plastic or aluminium inside the glass, if somebody knows more about this, i would like to hear it

Everybody loves glass back until they drop it. How many people have you seen walking around with cracked phones because its too expensive to repair. Hmmm, just seems like another marketing scheme to get you to upgrade sooner. I'll pick hard back over glass every time. As someone said on here earlier... that once you put a case on it, and most smart people do unless its an Active or Rugged phone, there is no difference. Most hard back phones do wireless charging just fine if that's your thing. I wish more reviewers would mention if its glass back or other because its a deal breaker for a lot of people.

Engineer 2: Have you considered using and exceedingly thin layer of glass-- one of the most fragile materials imaginable?

While glass is glass, and glass breaks. A lot of glass nowadays isn't that fragile and they are very good at resisting scratches from everyday object such as keys. Unless you are dropping your phone every 5 seconds or putting it in an extreme condition 24/7 it won't break that easily. It also depends on the phone structural integrity such as the phone frame. Even a plastic phone can still break or chipped when it is dropped if it lacks a strong structure and build quality.

I find that the idea of a Glass back Is IDIOTIC! Drop an unprotected phone on any cement sidewalk- it doesn't matter what side it drops on- SOMETHINGS GONNA BREAK! You used to at least have a 50-50 chance! So- then you put your nice beautiful PREMIUM feeling glass backed phone In a PLASTIC case!!!!!! ( Where it spends the rest of its life! ) You get a very short time to enjoy that glossy, slippery premium feel- right when you first open the box, if you like your phone at all, you get that case on quick!
Where the glass fails miserably is the moment you find your battery failing. You can all too easily crack your nice glass back as you heat the phone up, then try gingerly to remove the glass to replace your battery! Oh the relief when you finally get the new replacement glass back on, without also cracking it!
As for plastic, when I worked for a sign company, I bent a thin piece of lexan (polycarbonate) back and forth DOUBLE like a piece of cardboard, it folded on the same line about 100 times before it finally cracked!!!! Why can't we have phone backs made of this stuff?! You could smack it with a hammer all day without it cracking!!! Also, gone are the days of the removable back- you could simply snap in a new battery, even carry a couple of spares charged and ready! Not any more!
We take a great hit in functionality when all we want to do is smoothly pet our new cell phone reveling in its shiny smooth thinness! ooooohhh! isn't it pretty?!!!
There should at least be an option to replace your glass back with a polycarbonate one- after you get sick of the glass one breaking on you!
