Out of all the Super Bowl losing QB's, I felt bad for Jalen Hurts the most. Throughout the season, he always had the right demeanor, said the right thing, and I admired his clear work ethic throughout. You can tell he wanted to win to prove all his doubters wrong. Jalen Hurts squats more weight than most of the defensive lineman in the league. The Eagles found the loophole in the sneak because the QB they drafted is just physically stronger than the linemen he's pushing against. Even if he didnt have Goedart or Brown pushing him, he'd still get the 1 or 2 yards he needs each time.

It's practically unstoppable, and likely to increase injuries as more teams start incorporating it more often. The only chance to stop it is to have just as many def pushing back, but they can't cuz, unlike the off, they don't know thats the play.

As someone who doubted the eagles in a sense it was a weird position to hold. What I mean by doubted in a sense was that I thought they may very well be as good as hyped, which they were, but it was hard to truly buy in because of who they played. Now obviously you can only play who you’re scheduled and there are no guaranteed wins in the NFL but it’s hard to truly know how good a team is if they aren’t playing the elite teams. Through history we’ve seen a lot of teams that have good records by beating weaker teams all season long suddenly crumble when they finally do play against elite teams in the postseason.
I’m not saying they’re the same as those teams but a couple examples of teams that had great records for awhile and then slipped when they played tougher teams are the 2020 Steelers who started 11-0 and finished 12-4 and went one and done or my chiefs in 2003 who went 9-0 and finished 13-3 and went one and done or 2013 when they went 9-0 and finished 11-5 and one and done. They won a lot against weaker teams but then struggled against the better teams when they finally got tested. I think many of us wondered if that would happen with Philly.
Realistically they didn’t face an elite team that tested them until the Super Bowl. The Niners would’ve been that team had the QB fiasco not happened. And if they’d beat the Niners without the QB craziness I think they’d have had more believers entering the Super Bowl. But unfortunately the Super Bowl was the first elite team they played and they proved clearly they were just as good as a lot of people said. I personally thought they would be really tough to beat but always had lingering curiosity since they didn’t play anybody elite yet where they truly had a test. And in a sense both sides were right. People who thought they were a great team were right - they took KC to the very brink and easily could’ve won that game. But doubters were also proven right a bit by seeing the vaunted elite defense get torched the entire second half. The pass rush that was so feared leading in to that game didn’t have a single sack in the game. So yes they were legit and an elite championship team that deserved to be there but at the same time some of how they were seen as elite, predominately their defense and pass rush, was shown to have largely benefitted from a season where they didn’t play any elite QBs or offenses all year. When they finally did play an elite offense and QB their defense got got absolutely torched. And what was more eye opening about it than what Mahomes did was seeing how much the run game dominated because the Chiefs aren’t a running team really at all. All season the chiefs ran the minimum amount to keep defenses honest against the pass but they never established the running game like they did in this game. When a team that doesn’t run the ball often averages iber 6 yards a rush that’s pretty wild to see when the defense they’re playing is supposed to be so elite like the eagles were.

This is why I think these lists are pretty stupid. Football is highly volatile and every year is different. They try to treat it like the NBA where players play 80 games and pretty much every year are ranked the same. Football is not like that. Trevon Diggs had 11 picks last year and 3 this year. It was one of Andy’s first seasons when Jamal Charles suffered an ACL injury in Chicago on a similar play, which shortened his career significantly. Then 4 years later a similar play did the same thing to his QB. I think after that, Reid just realized that play just wasn’t worth it and there’s other ways to get that yard.
Also, Nick has a valid point, and there’s a reason why that play was illegal for most of football history. Defense isn’t allowed to push guys up front, but the offense is. It’s an unfair competitive advantage, plain and simple.

The ball carrier is being sandwiched between (conceivably) 2,000+ pounds of full-grown, NFL players pushing him and smashing him from the front and the back. Disagree with Nick about why the league is going to ban the "Rugby" play. I do think it will eventually be banned, but for reasons related to injury. A LOT of ex football players have provided analysis of how that style of play will eventually cause serious injury to either the QB or defensive linemen (Richard Shermon being the most outspoken) because of the size and weight of the players. We aren't talking about a Tom Brady type QB sneak, here. We're talking about multiple people pushing the ball carrier into a wall of 300 lb men like a rag doll.
