Thanks for your informative video. We are in Cape Town, South Africa and have similar varieties that grow very well here. We call them Cape Gooseberries. They make an excellent jam/sugar preserve 😊
Golden Berry or Cape Gooseberry is physalis peruviana. The Ground Cherry is physalis pruinosa but seed sellers often get them mixed up or add both in the same pack. This happened to me and I weeded out a lot of Ground Cherries before deciding to try to identify the odd plants that kept popping up around my gooseberry plants.
This is great! I inherited a school garden with Peruvians growing. They are very fruitful and easy. We are on the coast so no real frost or soil freezing. But now I want to try the Aunt Molly type. The nursery had some so I grabbed them. One last thing and please do not be offended. It sounds like you're breathing through your mouth. You may know this and have good reason but just mentioning that there is lots of research and resources about the problems with mouth breathing especially on inhale. 🙏🙏🙏
I grew the peruvians, aka golden berries. if you have a long season, they eventually do dry and fall, and are sweeter. They are a beautiful plant. Mine lived for about 3-4 years, ( zone 9 in northern Calif.) I've had problems getting the same type, as seed companies, even the same one, mix them up. The 2nd time I ordered from the source of my original seeds, I ended up with something that was definitely a tomatillo, with a pineapple twist. Tasty, but not the same.
i bought a few packets for next years garden of 3 or 4 different varieties of ground cherry. This video makes me more excited to try them out :). My plan was to start them indoors like I do tomatoes and then plant them out after the last frost, I wonder if that'll give them a head start. That's cool that they do a lot of volunteers, will work nicely in a food forest
I am excited for you! Please share your favorites if you can remember too next year! Definately start them indoors. The volunteers are great, but it does help to get an early start for an earlier harvest. I think you will love them!
I tried that .,and it didn't work and I thought I failed with the golden berries😏 and I was really upset . .. but then they just started popping up all over my balcony garden because I ended up throwing the seeds out there just as a last ditch effort. The next spring they decided they were ready and liked being outside I guess! so I suggest just sprinkle some seeds outside then you don't have to replant them and they will just come up when they're ready but they DO take awhile...
I planted mine out in the garden the first week in May and they're about a foot tall and I think they're starting to take off. They do get droopy under high intensity sunlight and 80+ temperatures - but they're mulched and I water them weekly by irrigation - these are the Peruvian groundcherries. I've never grown them before but the regular groundcherries I have grown before- they were planted at the same time and are a little taller.
My plants are already setting fruit in Louisiana and you can bring them inside under lights in winter to continue growing and get a huge head start the next year. Cuttings root easily too.
I am so jealous that yours are starting to fruit already! Thanks for reminding me to either keep one in a pot or take cuttings! I really need to try that this year! I do it with my Roselle, and it works beautifully!
@@gardenwiseadventures You can grow them inside in a simple 5 gallon hydro bucket too. You don`t need a pump or anything, just a 15w Sansi light or two and a simple timer. Pruning may be needed. It`s fun to experiment though. After the plant uses up over half the water only refill just over half way to allow air roots to breathe. This is an easy way to grow a lot of plants indoors.
@@gardenwiseadventures I hope I like them because I have about 20 plants. The larger Cape Gooseberries just started setting fruit too. Two Ground Cherries are loaded and I`m waiting for some to get ripe.
@@gardenwiseadventures Most of my Pervuvian kind haven`t bloomed yet and I planted them in March and April but I got a few off two plants. The taste shocked me. They`re delicious. I`m not sure what type of ground cherry was in the pack. They turn a tan/green when fully ripe. They taste good when fully ripe but there isn`t much difference in looks between a green and ripe one except the ripe ones are on the ground and the husk looks dry. One plant tasted bad so I pulled it but I`m saving seeds of the sweet one. I ordered the non-Pervuvian type like you have and the plants are loaded with fruits already. I can`t wait to try them and just planted more for a late fall harvest. I`ll bring those in for the winter and try to overwinter the others for a better harvest next year. I heard they do best after their first year and start producing lots of fruits.
@@baneverything5580 I would love to hear what you think of the Peruvian ones once you get fruit! They are really late setting fruit normally. It's so much fun experimenting with new fruit! You never know what you will end up loving!

If they are in a ditch, they likely are a wild type of groundcherry if you live in a more temperate climate. I have seen them in some of my clients' yards in the past. I have heard that if they are still green they are not good to eat, and might give you a GI upset. They won't ripen off the vine.

I found that the aunt Molly’s can have a little bit of a grassy taste to them, I have the Peruvian cape gooseberries started now, do you notice the same flavor profile with the Peruvians?
No, they have a different flavor profile. The Peruvian Groundcherries are almost between a papaya and a Mango. They are quite good with tropical overtones.
I want to can plain ground cherries but can't find a recipe ANYWHERE. I did some just like sour cherries - 1/2 C honey to 2 cups of water for a syrup, water bathed for 10 min. I hope that is ok.
