  • From the 1934 film "QUEEN OF HEARTS"
Here Our Gracie gives an hilarious spoof of the famous French Apache Dance.
The Apache Dance was first reported as a domestic street fight between two men and a woman in the 'Montmart section' of Paris in the front of a night club that was indirectly responsible for the name "Apache." A local Parisian gazette journalist reported that "The fury of a riotous incident (a fight) between two men and a women rose to the ferocity of savage Apache Indians in battle." These participants, proud of their reported deed, formed "Apache Bands" which were actually street gangs that would become known as "les Apaches."
    A note on the music:
"La Valse des Rayons" (also called " The Valse Chaloupée "), is from Jacques Offenbach's ballet "Le Papillon. Itwas used in a production of 1908 at the Moulin Rouge and has become the music most associated with the dance ever since.

That was absolutely fabulous!!! I had never seen a ""young"" Gracie. She was, indeed, very talented. These Apache moment in a film before the 1940''s were very lucky as the Hayes censorship business came in!! I would need Hayes to fully explain that to me as there was bootlegging; outlaw criminals,,,And Hayes decided to get cross with sexuality in movies..Perhaps someone will reply to my post an explain this silliness to me. Anyway, terrific film clip. Thank you, gallerydreams!!

I can explain. The Hayes code was voluntary. The studios asked Will Hayes, a Presbyterian minister to come up with guidelines as to what was acceptable for general audiences. The movie industry was dying. People could not take kids to see movies that might have x rated God awful scenes in it. You are thinking of mild nudity or violence. No. Movies immediately plunged into the worst films possible. Xxx stuff. So people quit going. So the movie execs got together and formed industry standards for films. It saved the movies.

I believe the date is in error here. 'Queen of Hearts' of 1934 was an animated film. This 'Queen of Hearts' above was released in October 1936. A Google search substantiates this on numerous websites.

The dance is supposed to be based on a dance call "l'apache," a dance originating in the French underworld around the turn of the century.
