P. Weller’s poetry has always been a precious example of an outstanding gift. Deeply rooted in universal ideas and emotions. Resulted in masterpieces from the very beginning. This is just the one I love the best. So powerful and humane!
Yolanda Charles on bass, Steve White on drums, Steve Craddock on guitar... Such a big part of Weller's sound and his ability to achieve his songs the way he heard them in his mind. Also, Yolanda always plays with such a great, relaxed yet compelling groove, so Weller could do his soulful thing with ease. And this is such a great tune!
My husband's funeral song as he entered the crematorium Only 54 when he died but loved Weller & it was no surprise to me he chose it. The lyrics say it all

Autumn blew its leaves at me Threatening winter as I walked Summer always goes so quick Barely stopping like my thoughts Which dip and spin and change so fast I have to wonder, will I last Through the windows of the train I caught reflections of a paper cup Hanging small in a pale blue sky Never knowing which way's up Above the clouds, what's to be found I have to wonder, will I be around As my anger shouts at my own self doubt So a sadness creeps into my dreams When you're scared of living but afraid to die I get scared of giving and I must find the faith to beat it Yeah, yeah yeah Must be me that's rushing by Time just lingers on the wind Bristlin' through my open fears I wonder what it's going to bring Above the clouds, what's to be found I have to wonder, will I be around Run and hide, run and hide I catch the sail at evening tide Run and hide, run and hide I catch the sail at evening tide Run and hide, run and hide I catch the sail at evening tide

Back in the day when artists played instruments wrote their own songs had lyrics that you could hear understand and sing along to, where artists kept their clothes on and didn’t need dancers fireworks or any other manufactured bs like these days on stage or in their videos because their talent was more then enough to entertain.
Yeah, you can’t deny this is one of the best versions of this amazing song. It’s probably got a different meaning for everyone. I simply love his vocals and the whole bands passion here. I wish he would re-record it this way. 80’s mod father of rock. Takes me back.

I so.. Love this man, I don't think there has ever been a song he's ever written or covered that I didn't like. Loved him from the Jam, Style Council to himself. He's untouchable.
That Live Wood tour was special. Wolverhampton Civic Hall, 1994. Unforgettable. A very special time; so glad they chose to film this gig. They didn’t include the encore with Simon Fowler performing Etta James’ “Take another little piece of my heart,” but it went on to become the Live Wood VHS, and we’ll never forget that treat. Thank you for the upload.
The Bacon Brothers did a very nice version of this song with Daryl Hall on Live at Daryl's House web page, but nothing beats the original. Paul's voice is pure heaven.
My god this is so good. Being from the states I didn't know much about him and started learning all about his huge career with the Style Council and the Jam. I had only heard this song prior to that. Way WAY UNDERRATED ! Just beautiful.

I luv Weller, my gran was from woking so spent much time there as a kid & I feel the essence of the place in his music, luv that he wrote this on a train returning from Selsey - also from my family tree early 1800s an ancestor married one of the Weller clan who left UK as settlers who claimed homeland & helped build a township in remote, undeveloped Canada
That opening E major 7 to A major 7 …..magical stuff …..God how I love this man’s music ….been a fan forever ….met him once coming out the black barn….I was star struck he was a perfect gentleman….big shout out also to the rest of the band especially the amazing Steve Craddock ( another of my guitar hero’s)

I saw The Jam twice, The Style Council once, and this band line-up twice - all three of those combos are the best he's ever been live. Absolute magic
