Very cool...I especially like the clean pages and text. The modern idea of pages having art/backgrounds under the text is annoying to me (YMMV). This instantly reminded me of flipping through the AD&D 1st ed DMG the other day. And black and white art is par for the course in the old school so it feels even better (-:
The Hardcover with Black and White text and images is an $18 dollar print on Drivethrurpg... just so you are aware. The Hardcover with Interior Color book is just over $30. There is a premium Color Hardcover that is the crazy price you mentioned at the start of your review.
I had totally forgotten about your videos that I watched during college, then just happened across your channel again. I still haven't lured my players to AD&D yet, but I'm still trying. I did get them to go to B/X though, so there is some hope.
I'm still around but I work too much to film a lot of videos anymore. When I'm home my kids are super loud too. Hehe. Welcome back to my caveman vlogging channel. :D
Well, I bought a color hardcover and a B&W softcover shortly after I saw this video in addition to the PDF. I'm blown away! It's arguable closer to the original 2e than OSRIC is to the original 1e. I'm not a huge fan of the art; some if fantastic and fits perfectly while some completely whiffs and matching the tone of a fantasy game but honestly that's not important at all in the grand scheme of things. For anyone interested it does not incorporate anything from the splatbooks- no Complete Fighter/Wizard/Cleric/Thief books. In a way I wish they had but it's probably a good decision as doing so would make the book a lot bigger. And honestly, I'd say a lot of folks back in the day just ran with the PHB & DMG. Thanks for a great review! Anyone looking to start up a 2e retro game would be well served by this book.
I got this one, discovered I prefer the real 2nd edition books. Too many of the 2nd edition optional rules are not presented as such in this rule set, and many of these rules I prefer not to use (i.e. weapon speeds). The author's own house rules (i.e. combining secondary skills WITH proficiencies ), which I would rather not use, are not presented as options. Other 2nd edition optional rules are not listed here at all (i.e. hovering at death's door). It does have nice illustrations. Basic color printing colors are not as fine as what you will see in the free .pdf version (I assume the deluxe color printing looks better).
True, nothing really can replace those 2nd Edition books. Thanks for pointing out some of the differences, especially about the optional rules that this author made part of the core rules.
So you can't use them to play the specific settings since the settings tended to use certain optional rules. So what is the purpose of this product besides being a printed version of someone's homebrew setting?
The 2nd edition books are pretty pricey these days surprisingly enough, so even with the house rules I'm sure you can play in a honebrewed world or even the published settings with some elbow grease / conversion.
@@Samwise7RPG Yes, originals can be pricey (unless you are patient), but the POD version are somewhat comparable to the POD cost of For Gold and Glory. Plus, you can find free pdfs on the internet. I just don't understand the appeal of playing someone's interpretation of the game. It is like being offered a homebrew rather than a compilation.
Hmm. I forget if it does or not... I know that some of the optional rules are treated as standard rules. I forget which ones. I'm at work or I would check.
your voice is cute and you share my kind of energy; but, you need to have more focus, unless you are just playing a game or whatever.... When you talk about a book, you need to focus closely on something. If you have a video game, you can do the same thing by focusing on particular things. It can be whatever you want... It really doesn't matter. I do tik tok lives and half the time I am just like.... I dunno... Talking about some minor shit... I get 500 viewers active at one time, and I'm sitting here talking about air conditioning LOL! You just have to say shit that people can focus on... Get specific... They like that...
I do often miss the days of AD&D 2nd ed. This is a cool way to compile that excellent game. Looks great, too.
With physical copies of 2nd on the rise it's nice to be able to snag a free PDF of this. I do really like the layout.

It's a very classy retro-clone from my first look at it.
It looks so beautiful and really well put together, a cool look at video.
Thanks. It looks like it would be easy to use due to the clear layout. Great for any 2nd edition game due to that. Plus, the PDF is free.
I've noticed 2nd edition physical books are more expensive now too.

I know there are several versions out there. Thanks for the info.

I joined an AD&D group so this was an awesome present.

I'm glad the video helped. :D
This is the book we'll be using in the next campaign I run.
Awesome. Have fun. I'm playing in an AD&D 1st and 2nd edition campaign now.
Don't know which POD service printed that book but its pages are already separating from its spine in the video.. and that book is brand new..
I'm not sure who printed it either.

Ahh, I wasn't aware of the print on demand option. It makes me REALLY wonder why the cost of the originals is still so high. Weird.
Most welcome! :D
Thank you!
Awesome! Does it include the character kits and stuff from the Complete Class books?

no,it doesnt.
By the way, wasn't' Gold & Glory the name of the adventure where you save Waukeen from a devil? LOL
Not sure, but I have that retro-clone.
